Purrs for the lost ones

Purrs for all the people still effected by Katrina and all the lives that
were lost.

I can't believe the most powerful nation in the world still has people
living in such conditions.

Yes, and meanwhile, Cuba, which has nothing, managed to safely
evacuate everyone from the threatened areas and nobody got hurt.
Makes you wonder about priorities, doesn't it?

No, unfortunately it removes all doubt about priorities.

But you have to admit, a lot of people refused to leave (or just plain
waited too long to do it).  That seems to happen in every major hurricane
that hits the gulf coast and the eastern coast.  People just never think
it's going to be as bad as it is.  I believe that's partly the news
reporters faults.  They make it sound like every hurricane is going to be
like a Camille (or a Katrina).  They build it up and build it up.  And when
it turns out the hurricanes *aren't* like that people tend not to believe
the dire warnings after a while.

Have you checked out the hordes of "homeless" in any U.S.
city?  True, some are alcoholics and drug addicts, but many
are "harmless" mentally ill with no one to care whether they
take their medication or not.  (And some have just been
unemployed for so long they have no resources left, and have
more-or-less given up.)  Doesn't say much for the social
conscience of "the most powerful nation on earth", does it?

I caught the tail end of a news story yesterday and wish I knew exactly
where this place is.  A multi-millionaire *Canadian* (corporation owner)
built a neighborhood of something like 35 homes on a large number of acres
somewhere near where I am (West Tennessee) for people displaced by Katrina.
They can live there rent free for 5 years as long as they work to keep up
the grounds and do things like that for the development.  It looked like a
very nice little neighborhood.  The people who were interviewed said it was
a godsend.

And for those who stubbornly hang on.

Over here, last night they showed the whole Spike Lee series on Katrina and
the aftermath, it was unbelievable especially the bit where Barbara Bush was
making it sound like Katrina had done some people a really big favour.

There was one sad scene- the rescue people explained what the markings on
buildings meant and the number at the bottom was bodies found inside the
building and there was one where someone had put a zero and then someone had
crossed it through and written "2 cats"
