Purrs for a friend please

My friend could do with some purrs right now...even through he's not a
cat lover, I am prepared to overlook his moral defect and say the
right cat hasn't come along yet

He got married about 5 weeks back, he was always going to get married
but the news they were going to hear the patter of tiny feet (Not
kittens) sooner rather than later made them move the wedding
forward..alas they've already had some falling out before the last
couple of weeks

He went into work last Monday and was told they were letting him go,
they said he'd failed his probation period. He pointed out that was a
6 month probation and he'd been there over 7 months and nothing had
been said about his performance. In the end, he got it out of the
financial manager he hadn't "shown enough commitment" more specifially
he'd taken 3 days off the week before

These were because his wife lost their baby.............

He's a bit of an idiot because they told him they would pay him until
the end of the month but he could leave now and also they would give
him a month in lieu of notice tax free (just as long as he signed a
document promising not to take them to a tribunal I imagine,) so he
took the money and went...I've had that stunt tried on me and as far
as I am concerned it means they know they are on shaky ground , I did
sign in the end but only after the offer had been considerably upped
(5 months in lieu plus normal redundancy plus a moment to treasure, I
was supposed to leave on the Friday but on the Wednesday I told the MD
I really felt I couldn't work anymore and he told me to go home.
Watching the b**ch who had been doing her best to get rid of me for no
more reason than I was still friends with the old manager who had been
bullied into signing on the dotted line for a month in lieu and a good
reference, staring at me and saying "What?! But I've got an important
meeting this afternoon and I need you to stay here!" and being able to
reply "Take it up with him and as for needing me you've spent months
trying to paint a picture of me as such an incompetent anyone would be
surprised you'd leave me in charge". She said "Oh you're upset let me
put you in a taxi home" and grabbed my arm to which she recieved
comments along the lines of "Do that again and I will have you for
assault. As far as I am concerned the one great thing about this is I
shall never have to see your face again!")

Anyway purrs for my friend and his wife would be appreciated

Thanks- he's thinking about going back to college. In his own words
last Thursday he's had two good things out of his marriage so far "A
resin tank and  oh of course, Gill" (I think that;s her name). He
seems unconcerned about the baby but I am just waiting for the fuse to
blow on that one

What kind of horrible employer is this? Taking advantage of his tragedy
to get rid of him? That's what it sounds like. Or else, they have a very
draconian attendance policy.

Oh, Lesley, you were smart. This was done to me once, too. I went to
see a lawyer before making the decision, but the lawyer said I would
have no case for wrongful termination, even though I had gotten no
warnings leading up to the firing (which, from my point of view, came
out of the blue). Apparently a company is not required to warn an
employee that they in danger of being fired, *unless* they've given
out an employee handbook that explicitly states that they will provide
warnings, probation, or whatever.

Well, looking back, I'm not sure I got the best advice from the lawyer.
I doubt I would have sued the company, but I sure wish I'd thought to
bargain with them for a better severance package - as it was, I only
got one month's pay. Which is a lot in some places, but in the tech
industry it's considered meager, especially since this company was
rolling in it at the time!

In any case, purrs for your poor friend - losing his baby and then
losing his job! Are things OK between him and his wife? I couldn't tell
from your message.

Purrs for both of them.  I hope he finds the perfect job.

I don't know how much comfort it would be, so it's up to you whether you
pass this on.  I had two miscarriages between my daughter and my son, and my
son is now my best friend.
