Most of you know why we had to move, what with the new Young, Cold,
"It's just business" Landlord making it clear he was not fond of us, or
the cats. And he wanted us to sign a lease that included so many
ridiculous things, I just could not bring myself to sign the thing
(especially with an additional $10 a month PER cat in rent!). And off I
went to quickly (yeah, right -- these things are never done quickly, are
they?) find another place.
I had no idea how. It had been 21 years since the move into The Summer
Kingdom, and I let ex-DH Victor handle most of that, as his chart was
better for housing/moving/landlords and all that. Last time, we had
taken our time, and Victor had found two possibilities that looked good,
but we decided on the one we ultimately moved into. When I faced Ken
(the landlord) and asked about pets, he asked how many I had. "Four
cats," I replied, not blinking. "If I have to clean it up in here after
you move, it will come out of your deposit," he responded, also not
blinking. "Okay," I said. "Okay," said he.
That time, I actually sent out invitations for a moving party. All of
us were a lot younger then, with a whole lot fewer aches and pains. And
we actually had a nice group of friends who agreed to come help, and
then party; IIRC, there were about 10 of us or so.
When people arrived, I had virtually everything except a few necessary
items (toothbrushes, bed, cleaning supplies, and that sort of thing)
ready to go. Everything was packed in boxes, labeled, and even the
furniture was moved out to the living room, so all was in one central
location.
Most of us stood around being social for awhile, until three guys with
some muscles (and thank heavens for Victor, Dave and Eddie) started
hauling things out to the U-Haul. Eventually, the rest of us weenies
started taking out the light little boxes.
Fully loaded, we arrived at the "new" place, and it was easy as pie pert
near. Dave hooked up the stereo first, so we had music to help us move
by, and I stood at the bottom of the stairs as people hauled in boxes
and furniture, telling each exactly where each item went.
It took three and a half hours! I couldn't believe we got done so fast.
Of course, there was unpacking to do, but all was in its place, and
all was right with the world. So we partied.
Twenty-one years later, I'm no longer in touch with some of the folks
from back then. And, as I said, here we are, 21 years older, groaning
with arthritis and backaches and a broken pelvis for me. I'm too tired
to even send real invitations, so I just do a group e-mail.
They say when you move you find out who your real friends are. If
that's the case, we are down to a bare minimum!
I tried to be organized and get everything ready. But this time, I live
with a DH who is ADD (hehe). Yeah, right, like *that* is going to
happen. Plus my pelvis didn't help, of course. So I packed as well as
I could in the first week or two, nicely labelling the boxes with my
label maker etc.
And then it all went to heck, of course. I had to resort to just
tossing things in boxes and bags, unlabeled, unseparated, and generally
a mess (my favorite has to be the bag I did label "Really, really dirty
kitchen stuff" -- lol).
As you can all imagine, the cats were on alert throughout this process.
They clearly knew something was up when DH thoroughly cleaned their
litter boxes. Heh.
So how many friends do we have? It appears we have three (not counting
DH's role-playing games group, but that's a story for another
installment!). Jennifer, one of my oldest friends; Therese, a newer
friend, but one who lives in the neighborhood and, in spite of age, can
do intensive work in short spurts; and Victor, ye olde DH of lore, who
may be slower, but has nice muscles from working in a furniture moving
company for several years.
To my annoyance, I spent my birthday packing and moving. Sigh; this
won't be one I will remember fondly! But Jen helped, and we stopped
long enough for her to take me out to dinner, and I got myself a cake,
dammit! (Which didn't all get consumed, and therefore managed somehow to
get packed in the move and get lost, and you get the picture. Yummm!
Icccckkkk.)
To Be Continued . . . .

Purrs a'plenty. I remember the last time we moved. It was awful. And
like you,
our friends were much older than the last time any of us had moved. I
felt so bad even
asking them, especially with the piano and appliances.

And off I

The last time I moved (and afterwards said "The next thing that leaves
this house in a box will be me") I was organised. I boxed up such
vital supplies as coffee, cups, spoons, powedered milk and a kettle
and that box travelled to the new flat with me holding it for dear
life and I put it in the kitchen where i could find it again.
Of course the move went as well as can be expected- (one of our
friends girlfriend ended up thinking he might have killed himself-
another story) and afterwards we took all the people who had helped to
the pub (gotta try the local out!) and for Chinese then came in and
collapsed onto the mattress, which was in the living room and
surrounded by all the other boxes.
So the next morning, we wake, we stare round at all the stuff we have
to unpack and Dave groans and says "I could kill for a cup of coffee"
So I said "Fear not, my prince" (or something like that) "Gimme five"
I unpacked the stuff, Dave had got up and come into the kitchen and
was saying what a clever idea! I opened the kettle and went to the
sink with it and...
The water had been cut off!

What is the matter with you people? I have a laptop here. It's not so
easy to replace a keyboard. (grin).
O.K., O.K., I should know by now that anyone reading this group should
always be careful with beverages.
Annie, who fortunately had already set down the beverage and just
about fell out of her chair laughing.

We did the same moving here. When we arrived that stuff was in
the box, all ready for use.
So were two Jimmy Shand LPs, and I still haven't got the record
player working properly seven years later.
The 1990s British movie "The Chain" has a nice take on this idea
at the end.

Happy late birthday! Nothing like moving to remind you of how old
you're getting.
Have you noticed that the U-Haul trucks no longer have "Adventure in
Moving" on the trucks? I always got a laugh out of that slogan.

You have my sympathy! I hate to move, and don't plan to move again until I
have to move into a long term care facility, or preferably, a cemetery.

I am with you on that!!!
One of the reasons for resisting the infamous ground foor flat in
Hackney is the thought of moving . I've got a couple of strapping
friends (one of whom works for a removal company!) who'd help out for
a few beers and a Chinese but I have enough trouble finding things
around here without moving!

Last time I managed 4- although that included Tel who the night before
down the pub said he would give a hand. Since at this point, Tel was
notorious for getting up somewhat late (he was effectively noctural)
we said "Yeah, sure" and left it at that..
He arrived at 10.30 and got us out of bed!
Then went into the living room, enquired about the possibility of
coffee and commented "I'd forgotten the Sun was up this early"
(To be fair he did a cracking job, appointing himself the guardian of
our record collection (this being before CD's) and making sure they
not only arrived undamaged but still in alphabetical order!)

Most of my friends are old and creaky like me, and have bad backs and
so forth. Fortunately, the last time I moved, I had a decent job and
was able to hire movers. But I don't move very often (I've been in my
current apartment 8 years), and that's one of the reasons.
