OT: update on the Lizard Woman

Some of you may remember that I was worried earlier this year because
the docs discovered I have thickened skin around the neck and shoulders.
The biopsy in July (my skin was actually 9 millimetres thick in the
neck!) showed that the collagen strands are thicker than usual and
further away from each other than normal. Polysaccharides have
accumulated between them. I saw a dermatologist last week, and she said
this is a known effect of long-time diabetes, though not very common.

Anyhoo, the doc set me up for phototherapy, i.e. UV light therapy, and
I'm going for my first session tomorrow. It sounds pretty nice - first
you take a bath for 10 minutes (they add something to the water to make
the skin more receptive of the rays), and then you get to sun yourself
for half an hour. :o) So I don't think I need purrs this time. I'm
actually looking forward to it, since it's very cold and dark around
here this time of year. I'm just hoping this will help with my lizard
skin and take away this stiffness.

Just thought I should let you all know, in case anyone remembered how
worried I was six months ago. This sounds promising. And nice. :o)

9 mm!!!??? One more mm and it would have been 1 cm?? Are you sure you're
not missing a decimal point there?? One would think skin 9 mm thick
wouldn't bend.

I'm sure the baths and the UV light therapy will be nice and warm, but
it just brings to mind an old joke on car repair shops - when they just
give the car "light therapy", in other words leave car out in the
parking lot... So you'll be getting some "valohoito" too. :)

No, I didn't miss a decimal point. The doc and nurse who took the biopsy
were just as shocked when they measured it. And yes, I'm stiff.

Omg! sure hope the baths and stuff will help.
You'll be all bathed and pampered and laying about "lamping" yourself
like a cat. :)

To my great disappointment, I didn't get to lay about, I had to stand in
this cabinet while they zapped me, and only for less than a minute. The
time will be increased gradually, but not to more than five minutes.
<shrug> Nicer than any treatment I've had before, anyway.

Too bad you didn't get to lie there and be pampered.
But, at least it wasn't too bad, either.
I hope it helps.

Marina,
I hope the therapy helps.  Maybe you'll have to move to a sunnier climate.
Purrs and hugs,

Marina, are you a diabetic? I have just been diagnosed with diabetes, that's
why I haven't been on here for awhile, it is taking me sometime to come to
terms with it, I was hoping my Doc would phone me and tell me he had made a
mistake!!! (no such luck) the good news is at the moment I am not on any
meds just diet control.
If you have any recipes, looking for non fattening pasta sauce recipes
although any others would be appreciated.

Purrs for your treatment.

here's one I like:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=20040210165855.GF31689%40mr-happy.com

as you'll see, the recipe calls for lamb, but you can easily
substitute ground turkey or turkey breast, which is what I normally
do.  it's actually a double recipe that makes somewhere between 6 and
10 servings as posted.  also, I doubled the spice proportions from the
original, so those of you who prefer your food to be a little more
subdued may want to reduce the proportions from what's posted.

Lois, I hope this helps you out as well as anyone else who is on a
low-fat diet or just wants to try something a little different.

My DH was diagnosed about two years ago. Head over to
alt.support.diabetes for *loads* of useful info, support, etc.

>If you have any recipes, looking for non fattening pasta sauce recipes

DH has found that he has to be VERY careful about pasta, rice, bread,
and such, since starchy foods in general tend to send his blood sugar
shooting way high.

Thanks for that info.
I have been getting conflicting information, some of the leaflets I have
here say to eat, pasta (but be careful of the toppings) rice and bread (oat
or grain)
I haven't yet joined any diabetic society - there is one that is local and
seems to be quiet active. I am still in the denial stage!!!

Pasta, rice and bread contain a lot of carbohydrates, which transform
into glucose in your blood, so they will always raise your blood glucose
level, but some raise the blood glucose more slowly and evenly. There
are tables of glycemic indexes (GI) on the net which will show you which
kinds of food will raise your blood glucose slowly and which will do it
quickly. Try to choose the ones that do it slowly. Bread with oat or
grain, for example, will raise it slowly, while wheat bread will do it
quicker.

There is a book called the Glycemic Index too and it is very interesing.
Lots of recipes as well. It's from the University of Sydney:
http://www.glycemicindex.com/

They have a lot more books now! I have visited that site in a long while.

Purrs for you to come to terms with it soon. I've had type I diabetes
for nearly 35 years. Count yourself lucky if you are only on diet
control; I have to inject insulin 6 times a day. :o) As for pasta sauce
recipes, let me dig around and I'll come back to you.

Purrs coming that you'll soon come to terms witht he diagnosis. I'm
sure others will be reassuring you as well. Just want to say that I
have several diabetics in the family, and they're all doing fine. For
some reason, Native Americans are prone to the disease. For some
reason, all my relatives with diabetites look Indian. I'm a little bit
Cheyene from my mother's side of the family, and a quarter Chocktaw
from dad's side. Usually just claim the Choctaw blood, since that's
provable Indian blood from the days when the government assigned
numbers to the Chocktaws.

I'm not sending purrs then, but just the hope that this treatment will
improve your skin.  I have a friend with diabetes and know what it can lead
to - all sorts of nasty things.  Oh, I just realised how bad that sounded.
It hasn't led to anything particularly bad for her, but she did have a while
where she couldn't get it under control and was very worried because of the
side effects it can have.
