"A few nights later, cats still in the bed, I got up at 4 a.m. to go
to the bathroom. When I returned, there was Biscuit, sitting in the
middle of my sleeping husband's chest, peering into his open mouth as
if about to perform periodontal surgery."

I really enjoyed that article!  I also agree that it is pure bunkum that
letting the dog sleep with you ruins your position in the pecking order.
You're either in charge or your not.  Of course I am also the one who
went out and got a king sized bed so Steve and I and our two 80 + pound
dogs and the cat could all be comfortable!  But when we tell them to get
off, they get off!

I also have to feel good about Oliver.  For the most part he sleeps with
us all night and doesn't run around.  About 5 am he gets up and gets
Boone up to go out but then he lets us go back to bed and he plays with
one of his toys but doesn't bother us.

One cute thing he does do.  If Steve and I are talking after "lights
out" he'll put his paw on the lips of whoever is speaking.  Kind of like
a polite "shut up, I am trying to sleep!

Like the aborigines of Australia, we too measure cold nights using
four-legged critters. Only in our case it's cats and it is for their
benefit. Last night it was a 4 cat night.

Always fun in the morning to watch the animals that don't get along in the
daytime disentangle themselves from the heap of warm bodies as they wake up,
and pretend they were never there.  Our little dog and big Siamese "cuddle"
at night and wouldn't dream of even touching during the day.

Nocturne sleeps on the pillow.  The bed is hers.  Inferior creatures
may sleep wherever Nocturne isn't sleeping.  Crowding Nocturne gets
you:

1.  If A Limb is crowding Her = Bitten
2.  If a Head is crowding Her = A Kick in the Head

Smokey sleeps on the foot of the bed.  It's the only place Nocturne
will permit him to be.  Usually he'd rather poke on the couch than
risk her ire, only coming into the bedroom in the morning to cry for
food.  Sometimes though he warms our feet.

Kumani usually sleeps on whatever pillow Nox is not on.

Tyche prefers to sleep ON her MomDad's chest or tummy.  She will also
take mine, or cuddle into our sides.

I'm only up to three cat nights. =o)  But lately, Francesca and Nina have
been sleeping curled up together between my knees, while Pan sleeps up near
the pillows with me. I wake up in some very unusual positions, kind of like
a big kid riding a too-small tricycle. Pan has been a big grump, lately. He
keeps growling and swatting at the girls. A few weeks ago, I found him and
Nina curled up on the bed together.  Before breakfast time, Nina loves to
scoot under the covers and play Catch the Feet. This is an effective, if
painful, way to start the day. Maybe Pan is irritated by this, as he used to
have exclusive under the cover privileges.

When I was dealing with the worst of MMJ's colb, I had a 5 cat bed.  I
knew I was feeling better when Huey gave up nursing duty and moved into
the living room to watch movies with Rob.  He caught MMJ's colb, and
they all transferred into the living room where Rob was sleeping on the
sofa.  A five cat sofa is very crowded.  Speedy, knowing this,
transferred himself to the floor beside the sofa so that he could catch
any cats that fell off the sofa.  He's a very helpful d-thing.

Unfortunately for him, one of the cats, I suspect Merlin, has been
teaching him some manners.  Speedy yelped and whimpered last night and
barreled down the hall.  His side was sore and he didn't want anyone to
touch him.  Merlin casually strolled down the hall afterwards and smugly
perched on the lowest shelf of the cat condo.  Speedy has been avoiding
both him and Pine Cone.  It may have been a one-two smack down.
