Kitten rescued after four days trapped in car's underbelly
By DONALD BRADLEY
The Kansas City Star

Robert Clark didn't own a cat.
So where were those "meows" coming from?

At one time, the Grandview man pleaded with a crew of Firestone mechanics,
"Guys, I'm not crazy. I'm telling you . there's a cat in this car somewhere.
I hear it. I don't care how long it takes. you have to find it."

Finally, after nearly giving up, they did. Or, when they took off the front
bumper, maybe the cat just jumped out on its own. A little black kitten,
just a few weeks old. Skinny, dirty, hungry, dehydrated and ready to fight.

Bumper - as he since has been named - had spent four hot days in the
underbelly and engine compartment of a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica.

But by Thursday, he was shiny clean with a full belly while frolicking in
the cool of Wayside Waifs.

"I don't know how he survived the heat of summer, let alone the heat of the
engine," Jenny Brown, spokeswoman for the south Kansas City animal shelter,
said as Bumper snuggled in her arms.

"He's still a little skittish. But he's getting used to people."

Clark, an investigator with the Missouri Commission on Human Rights, called
Grandview animal control about 4:30 p.m. Monday and told a supervisor that a
cat was in his car, but he couldn't find it. He thinks it got in there last
Friday when he was stopped at a light and a cat jumped out of a nearby woman's
arms and ran under his car.

He didn't know if it was still there when the light turned green.

"So I drove off real slow and was glad I didn't hear that . thump," Clark
said

Later at home, his wife told him a cat was in the garage.

He looked, but found nothing. Over the weekend, he drove to church, went
shopping and even traveled on the freeway. Several times, he thought he
heard the phantom cat.

On Monday, after arriving home from his job downtown, he heard it again.
That's when he called animal control.

"I was scared to drive the car," Clark said. "I didn't want to hurt this cat
that I thought was in my car."

So two animal-control officers visited.

"We crawled all over that thing and we didn't find anything," said Tom
Weber, a supervisor for Grandview Neighborhood Services.

The next step was to put the car on a lift at Firestone Tire & Service
Center in Grandview. An inspection found no cat - and at that time no one
had heard one.

"Those guys probably thought we were crazy, too," said Lynn Livingston, an
animal-control officer.

But as a mechanic was lowering the car . "Meow!"

Four more mechanics hustled over.

"They jumped in and started taking this off and that off," Livingston said.

But still no cat.

"There's only so many places a cat can hide up in a car," service manager
Brandon Thorpe said.

That's when they took off the bumper and the cat jumped out, hissing mad.
They think he spent some time in the battery compartment.

Firestone didn't charge Clark for the search and rescue.

"But we sold him a new air filter," Thorpe said.

That's amazing. Isn't that kind of how you found Grant?

I didn't find him that way, but yes, while he was still a baby and at my
coworkers, he was in her engine compartment when she drove 40 miles to work
and then someone saw him in the parking lot (on black top on a hot August
day) that day at about 5 pm. So he really was lucky. She took him home and
they forced liquids on him and doctored him (in expertly) up. I can't
believe he survived. He could only have been around 6 weeks or so old. It
did remind me of that though.

There are an awful lot of "closet" animals lovers in the world.  I like
this part of the story best.

Ever see how emotional those big tough firefighters get when they help a
little kitten or puppy out of a storm drain?  Gotta love it.

As I was reading the story, I was thinking the fellow was going to have
a big bill for having multiple mechanics taking his car apart, and
putting it back together.

Really nice of Firestone to not charge the fellow!

I love happy endings.

I know, I love that. Last night I caught a bit of a show on Animal Planet
about a baby penguin. One of the caretakers was young guy who would just
sit there and pet the penguin, with the most gooshy look in his eyes. He
was adorable! (I mean the guy, but of course, the penguin was, too.)

Wow! I'm glad the bitty is OK!

But I'm wondering about the woman whose arms he jumped out of, at
the traffic light where Clark was stopped. That's a woman who's
probably missing her kitten. I wonder if the rescue group is planning
to put up signs in the area where Bumper jumped into Clark's car,
in the hope that she will see them, and get her kitty back?

I wonder how many people thought that maybe he was working a little
too hard, or was a little too stressed out, before they heard the meows
themselves? "You're hearing disembodied meows? You believe there is a
cat in your car? Hey guy, I think you need a vacation." :)

I wonder why she was carrying a few (they didn't say, from the photo I'm
guessing 6-9) weeks old kitten in her arms along a busy street in the first
place.  What, no cat carrier?  With the noise of city streets and all that?
I'm not sure she should *get* the gorgeous black bitty with the big green
eyes back.

I'm so very happy Bumper survived, though.  And the story did say his wife
heard a cat meowing in the garage at one point, so perhaps the bitty kitty
was smart enough to get out from the bumper refuge from time to time.

Is it up to us to wonder why?  Maybe she just found them under a bush in
danger from traffic and was gathering them up to save them.

Why not?
Don't be so quick to judge.  You have absolutely no idea as to the
circumstances why this woman was walking down that street with a kitten/s in
her arms.  Maybe she was fleeing domestic violence.  Who knows, I don't and
neither do you.

*NO*, how about you don't be so quick to judge?  Has this woman come forward
to say, "Hey, that is my kitten!" or "I was trying to rescue the kitten and
it got away from me!" ?  No, she hasn't.  Nothing in the news reports
indicate she has come forward.  And since it's a newsworthy item, I'd
certainly have done so.  I'd also have been calling out and running across
traffic, yelling, "Hey!  Watch out, that's my kitten!" But the fact is, she
didn't do that.  Hence, the kitten wound up hiding in the bumper of this
car.

As for the suggestion of domestic violence, stuff and nonsense!  I've been a
victim of it.  I had a tiny dog I adored but when I ran, I ran for *my*
life... I loved my dog but when I ran (literally) I wasn't thinking about
the dog.  I was not walking down the street casually carrying my dog.  This
woman was walking down a busy street holding a kitten.  And the kitten saw
fit to jump out of this woman's arms and run across the road and then hide
inside this man's car.  Doesn't exactly sound like they'd 'bonded' to me.

So don't YOU be so quick to judge.

I thought that, too.  I hope they will and he can be reunited with his
original meowmie who is probably worried sick.

I'm a Goodyear supporter (due to NASCAR racing), but that was a good
Firestone dealership!  That's one way you *don't* want your car "purring
like a kitten" :D

Great story!  And, luckily for Bumper, publicity like this probably means
that he will find a home.  In fact, people will probably line up to adopt
him (and maybe some of them will adopt another cat when he is not
available).
