A few days after Caliban had fallen into the sea, Miranda took revenge
on the swallows that had enticed him to fall in.
We were taking our afternoon nap inside, when we suddenly heard a lot of
chirping in the trees around my shack. Mir sat up and listened, then she
zoomed outside to sort out the birdies. A few minutes later, she
returned with az swallow in her mouth.
Now, I think there must have been something wrong with this swallow, for
her to catch it so quickly, and if she hadn't taken it, a gull would
probably have killed it. So this swallow would probably not have
survived anyway. I did scold her for killing a bird, but at the same
time, I have to feel a little proud that she was able to. I don't know
that scolding does much good anyway. At least, Nikki only learned not to
bring her birds home. She'd only bring her voles and water voles home,
since she knew she would be praised for those.
Anyway, it was Miranda who defended Caliban's honour.

Good on Miranda. A sort of "I can make fun of him because he's my
brother"- thing, but "you leave him alone"!

So does she consider swallow suitable fresh food? If so I suspect your
mother would like to encourage her hunting.

Oh, I *wish* she would eat her prey! That would sort that problem. But
she needs someone to show her what to do with them after she's killed
them. I wish she'd had at least one summer on the island together with
Nikki. Nikki would have made her an ace hunter. And would have shown her
that she can eat them.
I'm not volunteering.

Definitely not a job for a vegetarian! (Not really a job for many
humans who happen to be meat-eaters, either.)
What about some of the other cats? Emil or Kasper?

AFAIK, they don't eat their prey, either, and even if they did, they're
not good enough friends with Mir to teach her. Also, IME, boycats don't
tend to teach these skills, but rather girlcats. There's my sister's cat
Ronja, but she doesn't even bring her kill home - she eats it somewhere
out in the forest, usually. And she and Mir can't stand each other, anyway.

I know I'd be at least showing Miranda how to open the birdie up to get at
the good stuff if it would save a boat trip to the store.

This sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale. :)
That'll teach the swallows to lure brave (but not overly graceful)
boy kitties into the water!
