Ohmygawd, Caliban has really gotten big!  I remember the little stripey boy
you first brought home but it's hard to imagine him that little looking at

Welcome back! It doesn't seem like you were gone that long. Sorry,
that doesn't sound very friendly. :) I just mean that I thought you
were going to be on the island all summer. How long were you there?

We were there just over three weeks. The weather wasn't great, it's been
a rainy, windy summer, and we have to go by boat to shop for food, and
it gets a little tricky. And though most of us can subsist on canned
goods, there's a certain little princess who will only eat fresh meat
(yes, I mean you, Miranda), and it was a constant worry how I would get
enough food for her. So in the end, I decided to bring them home.

> Oh, boy - looking forward to checking these out!

There's one picture that I took just for you, of the twilight after
sunset. The picture is taken due south (in the summer, the sun sets in
the northwest).

Thanks, Victor. Luckily I wrote up some adventures when they were fresh
in my memory, so I just had to cut and paste. :)

Thank you Gordon. I'm afraid Caliban's diet failed miserably while we
were on the island, since he would grab every opportunity to sneak into
the other cottages and steal other cats' food.I told everyone to throw
him out forcefully, to teach him to stay away, but I'm afraid they
weren't scary enough to keep him away from FOOD.

Even before I read the caption and knew what it was, the close-up of
the flower and thorns on the rosebush, was I though, a particularly
beautiful picture.

It didn't feel as though you were gone as long as you usually are.
Did Emil and Caliban have enough time to become buddies?

Emil: "I vaguely remember once meeting a nice chap who looked like
you, except much scrawnier."

Caliban: "Ditto."

I was a bit heartbroken when I saw that part of that rosebush had died,
but it was a very dry summer last year, and it left its marks.

They had enough time, and they did sniff each other from time to time,
but mostly they just ignored each other. They are both too easy-going to
initiate play, I think. Miranda, on the other hand, is aggressive
enough. She would go up to Emil and hiss, then a slap or two, and the
chase was on. Sometimes, Emil was the chaser, sometimes Miranda.

No flooding here, though the level of the sea water was exceptionally high.

First of all, **THANK YOU** for the photo of sunset, just for me!
It was for me, wasn't it? It had to be, I've talked so much about the
twilight way up north in early summer. :) That was really sweet to
come across.

Kitty photos:

I love the ones of Caliban stiding purposefully onto the cliffs. He's
a man with a plan. There's a particularly sweet one of Mir in a clump
of wildflowers. And the "Kaspar again" photo is a lovely shot. Nice
view of the water! Everyone just looked so happy to be there!

Hope you enjoyed yourself, too. Did you get a ride from your brother?

Yes, it was for you. And that is taken from the sky almost opposite to
where the sun sets. That's the way it stays for hours, slowly deepening
into gloom.

Yes, I got a ride there with my brother, but I had to take the bus back.
Poor kitties, they were cooped up in their carriers almost six hours,
through a very choppy boat ride, a short car drive, the long bus drive,
then a shortish taxi ride. But they seem very happy to be home.

I'll just bet they are, after all that. And I'm glad they like being
home - I was wondering, looking at them getting to run around on the
island, whether they'd enjoy the enclosure after all that freedom. But
it worked for them last year, so no reason to think it would be different
this year. It just looked like such a great place to be a cat!

Marina,
I sent a welcome home post yesterday and now I can't find it. I love
the pictures. In my lost email I suggested you and your niece should
publish a "coffe table" book of Island Cats. It would be wildly
successful.  Barnabus is thrilled that Miranda is back home and
insisted that I take some new pictures of him. I'll post them in the
next day or two.  While she was gone he's been lying across my laptop.
I'm sure part of that is the heat coming from the fan but one day I
put a picture of Miranda on the screen and he was enthralled and spent
10 minutes just pawing the screen. He was trying to get her to come
out and play :)

Welcome home, get some rest, we've missed you.

> Welcome home, get some rest, we've missed you.

Thank you, Julie. Miranda wanted me to point out that she got a tan
while on the island - the bluish hue of her fur disappeared and it got
more brownish instead. My niece was just telling me about this
phenomenon. It seems this is what happens to the fur of Russian Blues if
they get too much sun (I don't know how she managed to get too much sun,
since the weather was not that good).

Now, Barnabus, don't get mad, but I'm afraid I had to cut a piece of
Miranda's fur away, because she got a clump of resin in it and couldn't
get that out herself, so I thought it was better that I cut away the
mat, before it caused any damage to her skin.

I would think that maybe the same reasons hoomins can get sunburnt on a
cloudy day - the UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.  But I didn't know that
UV rays could alter the color of a cat's fur the way it alters the color of
hoomin skin.  From an article on the web...

"Tanning takes place in the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis. About
five percent of the cells in your epidermis are special cells called
melanocytes. When exposed to ultraviolet B light (short wave ultraviolet),
melanocytes produce melanin -- the pigment that is ultimately responsible
for your tan. The pinkish melanin travels up through the epidermis and is
absorbed by other skin cells. When exposed to ultraviolet A light (longer
wave), the melanin oxidizes or darkens. This darkening is your skin's way of
protecting itself against too much UV light."

Hugs,

CatNipped

I'd say it's not that strange for UV rays to alter the color of a cat's
fur as it alters the color of hoomin "fur" too... At least my hair gets
a lighter shade in the summer than in the winter. And if the rays work a
bit like hair dyes, altering part of the pigmentation in the hair, it's
possible that the UV rays work more on the bluish hues of a russian blue
cat's fur, leaving a light brownish shade...

Wow, you have some beautiful pics--not just of the cats (but them,
too), but just in general.  You have a good eye.  I always look
forward to seeing your pics every summer.  What lucky kitties to have
their own summer island (you, too).  It looks glorious!
