Our new cat Molly is settling in nicely. She is a whirlwind of energy and
has explored every square inch of the house in her six days here. She rubs
against legs and asks to be petted. She plays with the kids. She's
explained her ground rules to the dog and last time she and Jake ran through
the room, she was chasing him. She likes the kids and will curl up next to
them when they play video games.
But she is afraid of me. I know why. In her short life in captivity she
has been poked and prodded and injected and medicated and tested and had her
tummy split open and stitched up. While raising four kittens that had to be
very taxing to her tiny body.
So she doesn't trust me and she doesn't trust my motives. She seldom even
will come into the room I'm in.
So all you purr machines out their will you send some messages to the
Mothership for Molly. Let her know she is home. Even if she never warms up
to me she is home and safe and loved. And nobody wants to hurt her or make
her unhappy ever again.

Poor little mite. She is probably a little overstimulated by her new
surroundings and playmates. Where has she been sleeping? Does she
sleep with the other kitties?
Don't underestimate the help of the other kitties in showing Molly
that you are trustworthy. ;)

How very true. I think LB and Sammy had more to do with getting Rocky
to trust me than anything I did. He'd sit back and watch them do
something, before finally decide to give it a try.

Purrs for Molly to feel safe and loved, and for her to come around.
I just finished reading one of James Herriot's books. He was telling
about a couple of feral kittens he and his wife adopted. They
eventually came to trust his wife, but feared him, because he was the
one who did things to them. It took a long time, but eventually learned
to trust him. I hope it doesn't take so long with Molly.

Lb and Sammy are sending purrs for Molly to learn that you love her
and won't betray her trust.

Hmmm. You need to find her favorite "treat" and keep it with you at all
times. Also sit on the floor a lot, like the kids. You will be much more
approachable that way. I know she will loosen up one day to you.

Trouble is, if I get down there I can't get back up. Will work of the treat
angle.

The cats are communicating with the Mothership as we speak. Give her
time, she'll come around, I'm sure.

Purr, purr.
It sounds as though Molly has warmed up to the kids, at least. My
inlaws have a cat named Skitty who hates everyone except my father in
law. The rest of us: mom, 3 brothers, me, dog, nana, papa....well,
she hisses when she sees us. Some cats are very strongly one-person
cats. (Tyche only likes me and Dylan and my friend Jon; everyone else
can die).
Maybe she will come around, or maybe she will bond to your kids and
prefer them....regardless, I am glad that you are giving her a good
home.

It'll probably take a lot of time for Molly but I bet she'll come around
eventually. Purrs of encouragement for her and for you. (It's taken our
Oreo 3 years to go from shy skittish kitty to sweet lapcat.)

A house is not a home, without a cat.

I'm sure Molly Knows this deep down, she's just scared you'll
take her for some more 'poking and prodding' if she gets close enough
for you to pick her up, but once she realises life is not all p and p,
she'll come around. Purrs that it will be sooner than later.
