Roxy had her follow-up exam at the opthalmologist today, after
undergoing a course of anti-herpes eye drops. I thought her eye
looked substantially better, but now it's official - the eye
doctor turned off the light, put on his eye-examining headset,
looked into her eye, and said that indeed, she has fully recovered.
*** HOORAY!!!!! ***
And there's a bit of nyah-nyah-nyah in my cheer too, because this
is the doctor who prophesied that when I came back, her eye wouldn't
be any better and I'd have to give her birth control pills. He was
essentially humoring me when I asked to give the anti-herpes drops
a try first, because he was certain it wasn't caused by herpes. (He
didn't even think she had herpes.) Score one for the little guy!
All told, this eye infection, which she has had since February, has
cost me about $2000. Sure wish someone had thought to give her this
medication right away, but 20/20 hindsight and all that.
She looks beautiful again, too! :)

Yay, great news! Sorry about the huge bill though, you wouldn't think
an eye infection could turn out to be so expensive!

I'm glad Roxy's eye is all healed!
Having some medical background, it seems obvious to me to use an
opthalmic anti-viral, such as Acyclovir(sp?) for a herpes eye infection.
Birth control hormones make no sense to me at all....
I have heard of using opthalmic Prednisone drops for a herpes infection,
to control inflammation, but not birth control , systemic, hormones.
I have to have my eyes checked annually, because I use inhaled steroids
for asthma.
Kenzie has some pigment in the iris of her right eye, a very slow
melanoma; not serious, so far.
It costs more to have Kenzie's eye checked out, than to have my eyes
checked. Go figure.

I think she got something like that early on, which helped some, but
not enough. Considering how horrible it looked when she first had the
infection, I was grateful it helped at all. But she continued to have
a discolored eye for months.
She was also on antibiotics, plus an anti-inflammatory, but not a
steroid.
The medication that did the trick is apparently used specifically for
herpes. It's called Cido-something (sorry, don't remember). The doctor
gave her this "just in case", even though he didn't believe she had
herpes.

I read an article that explains why it works. It's not specifically
for herpes cats, but it addresses certain kinds of eye problems. The
issue I had was just that I didn't want to expose her to the many
problems that can be caused by taking such strong hormones. I myself
wouldn't even take them, so why would I give them to my cat?

Because you have coverage? Or do you mean the whole bill costs more?
Amazing.

That must be a big relief.
I'm glad he decided to "humor" you and use the drops as you requested.
Sometimes I think we should be charging the doctor instead of the
other way around.

Doctors would do well to learn to take their patients' observations
and experience seriously. I mean, I have been living with this cat for
9 years - maybe I actually do know something? This doctor isn't a bad
guy, but he has enough arrogance to get in his way. The way he simply
waved off the idea that Lysine can help herpes cats - evidently that
didn't fit in with his worldview, so he refused to even consider it.
This is a serious flaw, and not just in terms of bedside manner. It
really deprived him of valuable information.
He did have the grace to be genuinely pleased when she turned out OK,
even if he didn't openly admit I was right. Well, as the receptionist
said as I was leaving, "I hope we won't be seeing you any time soon." :)
