Escorting Dot and Buster

Takayuki - 11 Jul 2007 21:49 GMT
I'm beginning to allow Dot and Buster to stare each other down for an
hour or so a day:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/Takayuki9z/P1000207a.jpg

What I'm doing with them is playing with the cat charmer with them,
moving the wand back and forth between Buster and Dot, allowing both
of them to bat the toy.  Dot will still growl at Buster even while
playing, and will swat at his head instead of the toy if he gets too
close. :)

As well as supervised play, I'll let them both have full access to the
rooms at the same time.  When I do this, I escort Dot closely.  I keep
my body between the cats and don't allow Buster to approach closer
than about five feet from Dot.

Today, I was allowing them both to roam freely for a couple of hours.
Dot was lying on the platform next to me, but seemed to decide that
she wanted a snack.  She jumped down and started inching towards the
hall.  She looked at Buster's room - if the screen is intact, she'll
dash past it at this point, but she saw that it was open.

She dashed past it anyway, and encountered Buster, standing about 15
feet away.  She stopped, growled, then dashed a course that took her
past him.  As Buster readied for a pursuit lunge, I ran after Dot.
Seeing me following Dot, Buster hesitated and aborted the chase.

I quickly found Dot on the kitchen counter, waiting for the pursuer's
next move.  Seeing that the pursuer was me and not Buster, she jumped
down and purred.  She started eating her food.  Buster peeked around
the corner, watching anxiously as Dot ate.  This was Dot's regular
dish, but Buster had never seen Dot eat here before - he thought it
was his own second dish!  Dot, seeing him out of the corner of her
eye, growled.  Buster wanted to approach, but I shooed him away.

Later, Dot was on the living room couch, readying for a nap.  Buster
was tired too.  He curled up with his head on the carpeted scratching
post, and started to close his eyes.  Dot stretched out her forepaws
and partially closed her eyes too.  Then, Buster stretched and roused
himself, deciding that he wasn't so tired after all, and he batted and
ran after a sparkly ball.  Dot's eyes went wide.  Buster's play
eventually ended up with him going for a bite to eat in his own room,
where I went up and shut the screen.

They're both napping now, Dot on the sofa, and Buster in his room,
separated again.  Buster is now dreaming of how wonderful it'll be
when his hoomin finally lets him have Dot as his own personal chase
toy.  Dot now is dreaming of a utopia where no cats but her exist, and
she has dozens of hoomin slaves tending to her and feeding her ham.

Not really - they both behave the same way they always have.  What's
progressed, I think, is just me.  I've gradually allowed the two to
interact more and more, but their reactions would have been the same
even on the first day.

In fact, I have videos of when they first met at the cat shelter.
Someday I'll have to put it up when I have a chance.  It's so funny,
it features Buster playing with toys at the shelter, and Dot watching
him suspiciously, just like today. :)

Maybe you are expecting too much.  I can't hold my hand on my heart and say
that KFC & Boyfie live together in total harmony, they don't.  I think you
need siblings for that.
It's nice for me to think that Boyfriend brings his prey back to the house
for Kitty to have, but what is far more likely is that he flies back to the
house going "OMG, OMG, I've caught this, it's in my mouth and it's alive and
I don't know what to do with it so deal with it, meowmie.."

I've never had to introduce inside cats to each other so I can offer zilch
advice about that.
My two often hiss and bat at each other.  It causes me no concern.

Boyfriend is such a funny little meowmie's boy. :)

I've made a decision.  I'm not going to keep Buster confined much
longer.  He's made an awesome sacrifice, going into his fifth week of
confinement now for Dot's peace of mind, but she's now familiar with
her home, and it's getting so that it's not fair to Buster.

I'll taper off his confinement over the next week or so.  If their
interactions turn out to be really bad, then I have a possible backup
plan - open up the upstairs, where there are three more bedrooms, and
use them as kitty hideaways for Dot.

No way. It's been 5 weeks? Man, time flies.

I do realize now that much of the "contention" between Sugar and Pearl
is just ritual. It's like people you knew and you just have to push
their buttons or they yours. Or someone you trade friendly insults
with, but once in a while they get just below the belt.

Actually, it's been four weeks, which means that this is the fifth
week. :)

I think it's funny that Pearl and Sugar have evolved this
understanding between them.

Mine are like a bunch of human siblings. Sometimes they are all
friends, sometimes they squabble, sometimes the youngest (Lily) is a
royal pain in the a$$ because she torments the older ones, we have
swearing and hisses and swats, but on the whole they all get
along. :o)

Dunzi and Sarsi are sisters and they regularly have disagreements they
had one this morning, seriously yowling and brawling and wrestling.
Winner washed the loser and now they're asleep together

You can sort of see why I tend to think of Buster as a full adult - he
has a broad, grown-up face, a calm expression, and wildcat stripes.
But they both have the cutest little vocalizations and sweet faces,
and I sometimes have to treat them like kittens.

One of the adorable things about cats, is most all of them, no matter how
adult and regal, have a crazy wild kitten somewhere inside just waiting to
get loose.

But that's one of the amazing things about cats, how they can be both
at once, or all things at once.  It's like what Marina and I have said
about cats, they're subline and ridiculous at the same time.   There
are times when Dante looks incredibly dignified, like some kind of
black lion.  I can't believe it's him.  Then, he goes NYOW-WOW! and
shows me his belly, and I'm like "Yes, he's back." ;)

I swear, their faces are so deceiving. :)  Dante does have that barrel
chest.  Except a male lion's mane just makes him look big, whereas
Dante really is just big. :)

Wow, they are beautiful cats. You've only had them a short time,
but they look so well-cared-for & content.  That looks like a pretty
peaceful stare-down, and they're very close to each other! You're
doing great.

If they were both on the floor, this distance would make a chase
almost inevitable - Dot will swat at Buster and run, in her classic
hit-and-run maneuver, and Buster would give chase.  I allowed them to
be this close because they were on separate platforms, and couldn't
get at each other easily.  I've never seen either successfully lay a
single paw on the other. :)

Heh. Yoda used to do that. My son used to call it a "drive-by
clawing".

This sounds altogether *too* familiar! :-/

I hope Dot learns to tolerate Buster eventually...

Is that how Smudge is with Licky?  Dot's an indoor only cat, so yes,
they both have to learn to get along.

That's exactly how she is. If she wants to get by him, she'll creep
by, growling the whole time, and then suddenly dash past him. Licky
doesn't exactly chase her, so he's a bit different from Buster in that
way. He's more like a "picador". He goes up to her and *stares* at her,
or gets right up in her face - little things to annoy and fluster her.
He's such a brat!

I think he is one of the reasons she stays out as much as she does.
She's always loved going out, but I think she has extra incentive with
The Brat around.

Of course, the outdoors is not free of annoying cats. Right on my
street there's a big, stripey bruiser of a cat who likes to intimidate
all the other cats on the block. But like most bullies, he runs off
if someone bigger (eg, a human) goes near him. But the other day,
I saw him and Smudge having a stare-down, and Smudge won! He slunk
off. She's a small kitty, but she's tough. (So why is she so afraid
of Licky, that uber-wuss? Cat dynamics are mystifying.)

This is generally how Lily behaves around Eli. The exception is when food is
being served, at which time she "forgets" that Unka Eli is "dangerous".

Eli does this to Lily as well. He knows that all he has to do is stare and
walk in her direction with a certain look in his eyes, to get her all upset.
He seems to take pleasure in reassuring himself what a big bad bully he
still is.

Sugar doesn't growl, and she doesn't do it as much as she used to, but
she does the creep and dash thing with Pearl a lot. It's kind of just a
formality anymore.

Yikes. I'm very, very *sorry*, Ms. KFC! I do not want to be sent to your
office to be dealt with! You nearly sent your mommy to the emergency room!

Right this very minute, I am stopping my typing every few seconds to give
your beloved a few skritches and tell him what a handsome, good kitty he
is.

Am I forgiven?
