Vino had a good cat day yesterday. A big cat day. Full of important
cat business.
It was mid morning and I had the day off so I was sitting at the
computer in my jammies and robe, reading messages. Suddenly heard a
mournful yowling from the back yard. It was a huge tabby meatloafing on
top of the 7 foot fence.
Vino was all agog, ogling the intruder and making sure his territorial
perimeter wasn't breached. The cat just kept meatloafing up there and
occasionally yowling, so Vino eventually got bored and went off to sun
himself on the steamer.
I kept half an eye out in case anything happened, but honestly, I kind
of forgot after a while and didn't look out much anymore.
After a while I heard the tabby's collar bells jingle and looked out to
see the cat had jumped into our yard! Vino was just lying there ever so
casually, didn't seem to bother him at all. But I didn't want any
trouble, so I went out and sat on the other steamer, knitting. I kept a
good eye on both cats. Tabby kept sidling up near Vino and flinging
his/herself on the ground and lolling ecstatically and also coming up
and winding is/herself around my legs. Vino just sat there looking, but
you could tell he was tense.
A few times when Vino got too close the cat hissed a very minor hiss.
Vino did nothing. It was all very surreal because Vino normally hates
all other cats.
I suspect that this cat is a regular visitor to the yard, probably when
I'm at work. I wonder if it's a female in heat? But it just didn't
seem bad enough, the writhing and lolling. There were no manly bits.
Cat had a collar on, one of those ones that have a bit of elastic so it
can come off. So it's from the neighbourhood. I know I've seen it
before, but there is another one that looks almost identical except it
has a wider head and is more "male" looking. Vino doesn't mind that one
either.
Eventually the cat got to be a bit of a bother and I thought Vino might
want a bit of a sleep (his eyes kept getting droopy but he was too tense
to sleep) . So I picked up the intruder and helped him over the fence.
So things look good for more cats in the future if this is anything to
go by. I'm still planning on 2 kittens once we're in the new house.
But we also want a dog (well, it's more Dennis' dream, really. Golden
Retriever puppy. I think Vino would love it. He's ok with dogs. It
will be quite a life out there on the 4 acres once we move in October!!!

Maybe it does mean that Vino could accept another cat. Two kittens
and a puppy sounds a full house! I hope Vino can handle that. :)

Wow, Vino really didn't react that much, did he? I wonder if you're
right, and this cat visits regularly when there are no humans around.
In which case, maybe Vino's already used to this cat (and its twin).
That would be great if you could bring in more kitties.

Golden retrievers are so cool! I wish we had the time for a dog, but
with both of us working full time jobs, there isn't really enough time
to dedicate to the dog. That, and the fact that Luna would never forgive
us if we added a dog to the pack. :)

I wonder if having a larger territory makes Vino more relaxed around
other cats? Maybe spending time in quarantine made a difference.
Whatever the reason, this is great news. Give him a scritch from me.

Yeah, I don't know what it is either. I guess he has been spending a
lot of time around other cats lately. First the quarantine and then he
spent 3 weeks in the "cat spa" in April while I went to Canada. But it
still seems to depend on the cat because there are some cats that come
over the fence that Vino just hates. It's so funny trying to see him
get over the fence after them when they leave. It's like watching a
squishy ball hit a wall and slide slowly down ;-)
