Just wanted to share this about my chow/lab mix "Chester".
I adopted Rudy at the end of March of this year. He's a Siamese mi
and was about 3 months old at the time. My dog, Chester was about
years old and had previously lived with a 21 year old lady tortie.
I wasn't ready to get a new kitty until she was gone for about
months. It just seemed like the right time for me.
I know most of you can relate to not wanting to compare he
personality, etc. until I was done grieving.
Well, I wasn't able to adopt Rudy until he weighed enough to b
neutered, so I took a towel to the shelter every other day or so, so
could hold him in it (to get his scent) and then brought the towel hom
for Chester to smell Rudy's scent. Then I took it back again (wit
Chester's scent) so there were no "big surprizes". At least not as fa
as the scent was concerned.
Almost from the MOMENT I brought home my new bitty, Chester was the ne
"big brother".
Aside from the towel, I made sure to introduce them "butt first"..
making sure my dog was the one to sniff Rudy's butt... after all, Rud
was the new one to the household. :)
Since that day, Chester and Rudy are BEST FRIENDS!
Of course they have their moments, but for the most part, Rudy is th
"bratty little brother" to Chester and he is VERY accepting of tha
relationship.
I have MANY cute moments (no pics because I'm the slowest of th
"pack"... LOL) but there will come a time (very soon) when Rudy will b
curled up in Chester's tail.
Gotta love 'e

Oh, yes, dogs and cats can certainly be best friends. In my house
it's the cats who have trouble liking each other. They are all fond
of the dog and she loves them and all the other kitties she sees when
we're out walking-- although they (the other kitties, not mine) don't
usually appreciate a large wet dog nose in their face.
They should say "fighting like cats and cats". Of course, that
wouldn't always be true either!
