If you want input, I'd like to weigh in - not as a user, but as someone
who loves to look at other people's photos: I *hate* Webshots! Each page
takes *forever* to load, because it's so busy loading all kinds of
advertising and other junk. And I have DSL, btw, so the slowness isn't
due to my connection. I can't scroll down to see the photo until the
entire page is loaded. If someone posts 15 photos, I usually get through
2 or 3 of them, and then I give up.
I haven't needed to research alternatives because my ISP provides user
web space for members. I just wanted throw in my 2 cents (whatever that
is in Japanese currency :)) about Webshots. Lots of people on RPCA use
it, so perhaps it's easy to use for the person posting the photos. But
not for the person viewing them! (So it violates #2 below.)

I use Flickr myself, but have wondered which one might be better.

Yes, I agree. Webshots is ultra super slow. I like Picasa which is a
Google service. It's also free, easy to use and the picture size is
much larger than Webshots. But the best part is that all the pics in an
album start downloading while you are viewing the first one, so it's
really fast to click through them.

There is a place to mark on a webshot album if it is public or private.

Webshots gives you two options - a public album that anyone can see,
or a private one that's invitation-only... if you have a public album
they have the URL all ready for you to cut-and-paste both for
individual pictures and for whole albums.

With Picturetrail, you can put a password on the albums you don't want
public.
I have my nieces's pictures under a password, because it's crazy to
put
little children pictures in a public album.

I'm very fond of www.picturetrail.com, mostly because I can't get to
webshots from work. It's blocked. Picturetrail isn't. It's basically
free, but I have the $20/year package for more pictures.
