Nina K Pettis - 04 Nov 2004 22:17 GMT The senior cats Skeeter, Kyle, and Jack, and Abbie [the d*g] are flabbergasted to announce that they have a new baby kitty brother, No Name Yet, adopted this afternoon from a nearby SPCA. They said he was four months, but he's tiny -- around two months, maybe less. He's strangely and marvellously marked in shades of brown and cream, with undecided eyes; when he slows down, I'll try to get pictures. Right now he's inspecting the house, inch by inch, followed in slow motion by the three cats. Too cute!
I hope everyone is as pleased as we are; I think my roommate did a fantastic job of finding him.

Jack was giving him a bath this morning, and just now I found him snuggled up to Skeeter, settling down for a nap. And Jean said she caught Kyle washing his ears. The only one he isn't completely at ease with is Abbie, and who knows what his previous experiences with d*gs might have been? But she's a nice girl, and they'll work it out.
Coke (working title -- Jack and Coke...) got quite annoyed when Jack wanted a bite of his Kitten Chow, and ran him off, but then they swapped food bowls a couple of times in complete amity. He's adorable. And did I mention the XL purr in the XS body?

It's just so precious when a Tom takes a kitten under his wing, washes him, etc. My Sumo did that to his little sister Squidget after Squidget picked out my DH, Lynda, at the pet shop where Lynda had gone to get some kitty greens.
His name will come to you. Meantime, take pictures -- if you don't, you'll wish you had once he's grown.
Welcome, what's-his-name!
Regards and Purrs, O J

Mr. Clark, adopted at the same time as the kittens, did that from the beginning. Mind you, he did take on a martyred look when they nursed on him, but he let them continue. There were times he'd walk by with a kitten riding on his back.
He still washes everyone, and approves of my having grown a beard. I do note that he's utterly fascinated with visiting humankittens. He doesn't mind sharing their bottle, but he's not demanding of it.

Frank used to suckle Nikki when she was still a kitten. He looked a bit shocked at first, when she started nursing on him, and he gave me this WTF look, but then he settled down and started washing her and purring along with her. So cute.

Jack was giving him a bath this morning, and just now I found [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >Squidget picked out my DH, Lynda, at the pet shop where Lynda had gone >to get some kitty greens. Little Bit introduced Rocky to her kittens one day when I had them outside and Rocky came visiting. This was back when Rocky was about 3/4 wild, willing to come to me when he wanted food, but just barely tolerant of being touched. I was concerned about how he would react, but he plopped down and let them climb all over him. Of course, there's a good chance that he was their poppa, since he was the dominant tom in the neighborhood, and I didn't adopt LB until she decided she wanted inside to have her babies.
It's also great/funny to watch when a d*g adopts a kitten. When I was growing up our male daschund,Bobo, pretty much raised a kitten he found dumped in the foothills. The kitten's eyes hadn't opened yet, so the first four legged animal he saw was Bobo. It was hilarious to watch Mittens, the kitten, try to nurse on Bo. Nothing can beat the long-suffering look in a d*g's eyes when they put up with something because their master thinks it is just so danged cute. Mittens never did outgrow his love of Bo, and grommed him all his life.

I never did work out whether he had a gender confusion problem or a species confusion problem :-).
I also once had a tom who was a very good [and enthusiastic] kitten-tender. Made no difference to Smokey, pre- or post-neuter, whether the kittens were related to him or not. He'd groom, give hunting lessons, etc. [He apparently thought my grandfather and I were giant kittens in need of hunting lessons ourselves, based on the time he brought in a live snake and turned it loose in the living room. Problem there is that I'm very snake-phobic. My grandfather very calmly caught the snake and chucked it back outside, greatly to the cat's disgust, then got me down off the back of the sofa. :-)]

When Mittens was tiny we would take him and in the back yard, and Bo would carefully play with him and even carry him around and into the doghouse for naps. Later on, we tried to introduce another kitten. Bo wanted nothing to do with it, even growled at the kitten. We stopped trying to introduce them when Bo snapped at the kitten.

We stopped trying >to introduce them when Bo snapped at the kitten. My brother had a friend who had a dog named Dook. When the friend, Adam, got a kitten, the kitty would climb all over Dook, and attack his tail. Dook would put up with this for as long as he could until the kitty used her claws -- then Adam was astonished and terrified to see Dook open his mouth, and seemingly close it over the tiny kitty's head. Adam thought the kitten was decapitated! Dook just gently moved the kitten away and released her, intact, looking a little frazzled, but none the worse for wear. Adam had never seen a mother dog with her puppies-- gentle head restraint is pretty standard treatment for rambunctious pups.

Among the pictures over my desk, is a photo of a friend's lovely, sweet pit bull, with a flowery shower cap on her head. I love it for just that reason-- her eyes are saying, so eloquently, "You know I love you, and I'd do anything for you-- but what is *wrong* with you people?!!!"
