Purrs for Paulette

I got an email from Paulette that she had a heart attack last week,
got a quadruple bypass, and just came home yesterday.

As many of us know, Paulette is sort of like RPCA's official lurker, a
bit unusual and charming in that if she posted as much as she emailed,
she'd be a regular.  Although we may not always know it, she keeps all
of us in our thoughts, and I'd like to ask all of you to keep her in
your thoughts too and purr for her recuperation.

I'm glad you posted this; I was not sure whether to or not. She
sounds good. It amazes me that she has recovered so quickly. She is
such a dear lady.

I hesitated about posting the news too so I'm glad someone else did ;-)
Paulette has been a wonderful support to me throughout my health problems. I
count her amongst my most valued friends and as a bit of a saint (which will
make her blush, I am sure..)

I got her mail, too. Many purrs are going out to Paulette and the little
bittie she saved.

I sent Paulette a personal purr message.

Since no one has posted her kitten story, I will share it.

This is what she wrote:

On May 23, a neighbor found a cat in his garage, and asked DH to come
take it out.

It was a kitten; looked like a squirrel with a striped tail. On examining
her,  I saw her underside from chin to abdomen, plus parts of her front
legs were oily. DH said she was laying in a box of rags. And she was
absolutely nothing but fur and bones.

DH couldn't believe how sharp her spine and hip bones were.  I got some
caned food and fed her gradually 6 times that afternoon, and she drank
lots of water. I trimmed the poop from her butt and gave her a window
trim, even though we were to take her to the county shelter the next
day (I just matter-of-factly said we could do that, because he said we
certainly can't keep her because of Lucy).

Within a few hours he decided we should fatten her up and find her a
home (so my plan worked)!  Took her to the vet the next day for blood
tests for FIV and Leukemia, negative. She had ear mites and roundworms,
so one application of Revolution was applied. I didn't think she even
weighed a pound, but she was 2lb 2oz.

Brought her home and gave her a Dawn Ultra bath, trimmed her claws,
cleaned her ears, and had to keep her in a carrie for a few days. Only
2x did she pee on the paper, then used the little litter box I
fashioned. Drove 30 miles to the pet store for Wellness kitten food, a
small size litter pan, and a puppy pen. Still kept her in the (attached)
garage, as she was shedding ear mites.  Several times we just carried
her into the house to let Lucy see her, and Lucy just stared. But after
2 weeks we let her down in the utilty room; she approached Lucy but
was hissed and growled at... poor mite just kept her distance. And
Lucy wouldn't go into the utility room for several hours after the coast
was clear. Tried several other times, but it will take a long time, as
our house is too small to have a room to keep the squeaker.

Backtracking here... when DH saw her in neighbor's garage, kitty
was meowing LOUDLY. Since then, she barely squeaks. I hope she gets
her voice back, but she doesn't seem to want to make noise that often.

Two weeks after first vet visit she had gained 13 oz.   And she is
such an angel; I can trim her front claws while she's on my lap, and
put a drop in her ears dail, and clean the gunk with QTips, and she
allows it. We have play sessions 3-4 times a day.  Now the problem is,
will we ever get Lucy to accept her? We can't let Squeak have total run
of the house, as it's impossible to kitten proof it. We may end up
asking a no kill fostering group to take her, with a healthy donation.
But we'll give it a try.

Oh, and since the third day, she covers everything up in the litter box;
left the poop out at first. Such a good kitty.

She's so petite,  mostly typical tabby with long fine hair; belly seems
spotted, back more mottled with reddish brown. And that bushy striped
tail. And long ear tufts.

Been taking pics, and will ask the friend to scan a few into jpegs soon
as the roll is finished.

I know this is old hat to you all, but this is our first "kitten", as
Lucy was 2 when we took her, and had no bad habits, just scared of
everything. This one is fearless, inquisitive ,and faster than a
speeding bullet :)

So that's my dilemma til DH decides; he really likes her, too; it's
partly the age thing with us. Sigh.

Stay tuned.

Purrs from here for the angel Paulette.  I've heard of many wonderful
things she's done for RPCA'ers over the years.

Thanks for posting, Tak.  Many purrs and prayers are on the way for
Paulette's rapid and complete recovery as well as for a successful
integration of the kitten who is intent on stealing her recuperating
heart.

Purrs to Aunty Paulette, who has been a great friend and wonderful cyber-nan
to The Yowlet these past 3 years (he seems to collect them :-))

I've lost touch with Paulette when I went into my own version of
lurking following Eve's accident. Jody and I always said we're going
to get by to visit her when we made it back to Florida. It's taken us
three years but we're going to be in Orlando in November this year.

Purrs and healing vibes are on their way for Paulette's speedy recovery.

I'll get my new bitty Paulette (knew there had to be a reason I named
her that) to purr loudly for the human Paulette. Also all the others,
and me!

We will keep Paulette in our purrs and prayers and hope that she feels
better very soon.  Hobbes, Lacey, Sam and Barnabus are sending gentle
headbutts as well.

I've been purring since I got the e-mail.  Paulette is a dear lady, and
I'm glad to know her.  We're all thinking of you, Paulette; get well
swiftly!

I got a follow-up email from Paulette that she was thankful for all
the purrs (she's been following the group despite her major surgery),
and that she is feeling better and continuing to recover.  As expected
for such a procedure, she has a variety of discomforts and pains.

Her shoulders are painful because of their having been outstretched
(for the surgery?), and she's walking a bit better now (IIRC they
removed veins from her legs to transplant, and the incisions cause
swelling).

It also sounds like the new kitten, Squeak, is doing well.  She says
that their cats' relationship is basically that Squeak very
occasionally approaches, Lucy hisses, and Squeak retreats. :)  I'm
looking forward to seeing spotty-belly pictures.

Thanks for the update.  I'm glad she's recovering, but hope all the
discomforts and pains go away soon.

That's great about Squeak.

Thank you for the update!! I'm so glad things are improving. I'm sure
watching Squeak and Lucy antics helps.

Thanks Tak.  I got a call from Paulette last week.  She is doing
better and both her and her husband have totally fallen in love
with Miss Squeak.  Her husband has been doing a lot to help her
out and she is feeling better all the time.  We chatted for a
while, with Rob yelling his two cents in on occasion.  I was so
sorry to have missed her message about her heart attack and
surgery (was off the computer for weeks) and am thinking my very
best healing thoughts and asking the owners to purr for one of
the saints of this group to continue to heal and feel wonderful.
Paulette, we all love you and want you to be back to your full
health soon.
