Puschel is back home

It happened suddenly and unexpected. Short after Tientje's death we
received an e-mail from Puschel's dad. He wrote, that he could not
longer take care for her and that we made a contract, in which was
written, that we had to be contacted in case a decission has to be
made about Puschel. Of course we told him, that we will take Puschel
back, but honestly - it was quite shocking. We didn't think, that this
ever would happen!

The most horrifying scenarios came to our mind, how it would be, when
Puschel is back. We gave her away because she couldn't get along with
the other cats at all. Well, most of all she had a problem with
Tientje. And we guess that she must be around 15 years old by now. We
gave her away in 2001 after she had lived with us for 6 years. And
when we got her, nobody knew her age...

Since the 23rd of June 2007 Puschel is living with us again.

For the first days in the guestroom. In her first night, I slept in
her room, the rest of the days Volker did. She loves Volker very much.
She snuggles up to him, grooms his beard and sleeps in his arms. She
doesn't run when I come in. In our memory she appeared much bigger as
she really is:-) A visit to TED brought to our knowledge, that she is
except for some minor tartar, topfit. And her blood count is that of a
2-year-old:-)

At noon, when the gang takes their siesta in the bedroom, Volker
closed the bedroom door and let Puschel roam free in the house.

Against all expectations she did this with her tail high up and very
curiously. The last 3 days the guestroom door was open, but secured
with a grid, so they could see and smell but not hurt each other.

Today, on 30th June 2007 we dared to open the door and let Puschel
out. Someday she has to meet the other cats when she wants to live
here:-)

Puschel left her room and went exploring the suite on her floor. The
first of our cats she met was Smoke. He was sitting on the stairs,
watching her carefully, but making no sounds at all. When Puschel
noticed him, she through hissing and spitting at him made very clear,
that she would not be willing to take any comments from him and that
he should better leave her alone. Still hissing, she went down the
stairs. Smoke, still awestrucked, looked after her with
horror-stricken fascination.

In the living room Puschel met Cottonball and Bandit, who suffered the
same fate as Smoke:-) Dax was clever enough to watch the scene from
his safe spot on the upper plattform of the cat-tree. Puschel
continued her walk and went downstairs, where the pool is. When she
examined the shower there, Bandit came downstairs and sat in the
doorway.

It took Puschel about 10 minutes to convince Bandit, that he better
didn't move while she leaves the room. On her way back up, she found
Cottonball and Smoke each resting on a step of the stairs. She hissed
at them which leds to them staying without any movement for a few
seconds.

Puschel meanwhile had decided to take a look into the bedroom, where
Lady Mortisha, Owl and Chiara where resting on the bed. Puschel went
around the bed and examined the cat-tree, where Rasputin was sleeping
in a vault, not noticing anything. She went around the bed a second
time, this time carefully watched by Chiara and Lady Mortisha. When
she took a look into Rasputins vault again, Rasputin noticed her and
came out. Very curious he started following Puschel. impressed with
Puschels hissing. We couldn't believe it: Rasputin, the most fearful
cat in the world, was not impressed at all by Puschel's hissing.

Reaching the kitchen, Puschel met Sirikit. Sirikit was hissed out of
her way and she entered the room with the washing machine and a
cat-flap to the 'great out' for She. She very carefully examined the
cat-flap and we were amazed, how cleverly she tried to pry the flap
open:-( We have to watch her very carefully. Right now she is not yet
allowed to go outside. And when she will, she will go into the secured
yard as the others do:-)

When she had explored all rooms, she decided to go back to the
guestroom to take a rest. We inserted the grid again to make sure, she
can rest there in peace and that the boys don't mark the guestroom as
a revenge.

Our boys and girls have to recover from the hissing and spitting
monster, which happened to them so suddenly *g*

We will repeat this tonight. And tomorrow morning and tomorrow at
noon, etc...

We are looking forward to a successful integration...

Karen, I have to admit, that I was afraid, she could be scared to
death meating the rest of the gang. This happened with Rasputin, when
he moved in. First we were planning to let her out again tonight, but
we will not do it until tomorrow morning:-) She is quite tired now.

Thank you very much, Marina:-) Yes, Puschel is a very brave cat:-) But
for today she had enough adventure:-) She is sleeping right now in the
safety of 'her' room.

Thanks, Lydia:-) It seems, that Puschel is so exhausted, that she is
not willing to take a second trip today. She is sleeping on the bed
since. Sometimes she raises her head and purrs softly:-) We will give
it a second try tomorrow.

I always said, when I let a puppy go to a new home "that if you cannot keep
him/or her for whatever reason they must be returned."
It has only happened once.  The owner was killed in a road accident, he was
single. It was very difficult for this dog to return after many years. His
siblings had forgotten him.
Even so I believe if I cause an animal to be brought into this world I am
responsible for it.
I hope Puschel's reintegration goes well, Inge.  Even given her great age
now, good luck!

The same here. We felt responsible, so we put that into the contract,
when we gave her away.

Yes, we could use some good luck:-) We are very poud of her, how
confident she mastered her first meeting with the gang:-)

Wow, that's quite a story. She's a tough little cat. I guess she has
to be, with all the other cats in the house to take on! That must have
felt overwhelming to her - every time she turned a corner, there was
another cat, or 3. :)

I wonder if any of them remember her, or vice versa? It's funny that
Rasputin, of all cats, was the one who was least afraid.

Good luck!

Yes, Joyce, for her it was a great adventure. She is completely
exhausted and sleeps relaxed on the bed.

> I wonder if any of them remember her, or vice versa?

We wondered about that too, but I don't think so. In December 2001 she
went to her new home and the babies were born on 1. November. Puschel
of course met them, but I think, she can't remember. The same with
Chiara, Owl, Dax and She. We are not sure with She, but for the others
we are quite sure that they don't remember Puschel. Puschel has lived
as a single cat for the last 6 years and we find it amazing, how cool
she was today:-)

Yes, it is:-) We were quite surprised on that. On the other hand was
Rasputin a sire at a cattery before he came back home and had lived
with cats only. When he came home, our toms were not pleased and
showed him that. This led to Rasputin's staying in the bedroom on his
own will. Well, Lady Mortisha is still pesting him, but actually he
still likes girls, although he was fixed first thing when he came:-)
