The gist of this artilcle from Nature (<http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070625/full/070625-10.html>) is that domestic cats are descended from at least five separate domestication events in the Near East, not Egypt. Our companion cats represent five mitochondrial lines descended from the subspecies of wildcat that is found in the deserts of Israel, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Evidently the genetics say that the original domestates were from further east than Egypt, although you are correc that those terms do apply to Egypt.
