The gist of this artilcle from Nature
(<http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070625/full/070625-10.html>)
is that domestic cats are descended from at least five separate
domestication events in the Near East, not Egypt.  Our companion cats
represent five mitochondrial lines descended from the subspecies of
wildcat that is found in the deserts of Israel, United Arab Emirates,
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.  A similar article is at

- it has some additional information and a map.

Scientific American has an article about the prehistory and genetic
relationships of all the cats.

Not to nit-pick, but whether you call those countries "Near"
or "Middle" East, Egypt is considered one of them!

Evidently the genetics say that the original domestates were from
further east than Egypt, although you are correc that those terms do
apply to Egypt. The whole myth of domestication is, of course, silly
on its face. The idea that WooToo is somehow owned or kept by her
staff is purrable.

The BBC published an article about this story on their website, I just love
the photo at the top of the page.

That is cute.  The New York Times also has an article - I picked this
link up in another group:
