We moved Tayla upstairs into Ben's office last night, both so she wouldn't
be quite so isolated and lonely (my office is an extra room off the garage),
to let her sounds and smells mingle with the "upstairs" cats, Demi and
Jessie, and to give Sammy (who is traumatized by sounds and smells of the
new additions to the point that she's making herself throw up*) some
breathing space (so now she has the whole downstairs to herself).
Archer and Ozzy are still having bad diarrhea, but are eating very well and
drinking plenty of water, so it's probably still just the coccidia causing
it. They have plenty of Albon left in their bottle, so I'm just going to
keep giving it to them until the their stools firm up. Their URIs appear to
be *much* better - I don't hear any more sneezing, their eyes and noses look
clear, and Ozzy has quit hacking. I'll continue to give them their
Clavamox, of course, along with their nose drops.
Tayla still has quite a bit of her URI although her eyes look clearer and
she's not sneezing quite as much - she still get's to wheezing after a few
minutes of play, though. She too will continue to get her Clavamox until
it's used up. All three are getting L-Lysine with their canned food twice a
day.
*She's OK, she is just being a spoiled brat right now in spite of all the
extra attention, treats, pettin's, cojoling and loving I've been giving her.
I'm watching her closely and she is able to keep most of what she eats down
and drinks enough to keep herself hydrated. The vomitus is mostly
undigested dry food that she's scoffed down (she's a stress eater like
me!!).

When we first got the girls, they had a diarrhea as well. You know what
helped them? A bit of yogurt and some cantaloupe. :)

Oh, Victor, thanks! I didn't think of yogurt, but that's a brilliant idea!

I know about yogurt. But cantaloupe? How much cantaloupe
to give? in small chunks or mashed up?

We gave them a couple of pieces and they devoured it!!! They love melons
in general and will cry for some whenever we're eating some ourselves. :)

Cantaloupe! Our cat Tuffy loved it, but even a little piece gave him the
worst diarrhea so we had to stop giving him even a lick, much to his
dismay.

Interesting... it has the opposite effect on our crew.

I wouldn't give fruit to a cat who has diarrhea. But yogurt is great for
intestinal ailments. I'm sure it has to have live cultures in it to be
effective, though.

May I ask what the L-Lysine is for and how you give it? Thanks.

L-Lysine is used for treatment of the Feline Herpesvirus (FHV) and for
Feline Calicivirus (FCV), both are very common in shelter kittens and cats
(and since L-Lysine is a dietary supplement, it doesn't hurt to add it to
their diets as a precaution).
You can buy L-Lysine over the counter and find on store shelves with other
dietary supplements. It comes in 500mg tablets. I use a pill cutter /
crusher, and just sprinkle the powder over their canned food. I give Tayla
500mg twice a day, and Archer and Ozzy 250mg twice a day, but I'm going to
cut that in half starting tomorrow.

L-Lysine is so good in humans for healing up everything from cold sores to
sore throats and other digestive system problems. Hope appropriate amounts
really help Cat and Kittens.

And why didn't anybody mention this before??? I've had a horrible sore
throat for the past 5 days and I haven't been able to have a decent meal
because of the pain! I wish I'd known this before... :-S

I give one of my cats, Roxy, L-lysine in her food. It helps keep her
herpes virus in check. The way it works is that it competes with the
virus for the same receptors in cells that the virus needs in order to
replicate itself. I guess the lysine binds with the same receptors.
This doesn't rid the body of the virus (there is no known way to do
that), but it keeps the viral population down and helps to prevent or
contain outbreaks.
I didn't realize that lysine would be good for humans who have herpes.
I would assume that the feline herpes virus would bind with different
receptors - that's what makes a virus species-specific (redundant, but
I'm too lazy to come up with a better phrase). In other words, that's
why we don't get feline herpes and cats don't get human herpes. And
yet it sounds like the same chemical can fight effectively against both
kinds of herpes. Interesting.
Can any biochemist types say more about this?
And Catnipped, does this mean that your cats all have herpes?

No, they all have upper respiratory infections (URIs). The major cause of
feline upper respiratory infections are feline calicivirus(FCV) and feline
herpesvirus(FHV). I think the two viruses (virii) are very similar (along
with Feline Chlamydia psittaci which also causes URIs) and L-Lysine has been
shown to be an effective for URIs.

Now I knew L-Lysine was used by athletes as it aids in repairing
sports injuries. I gave it to my son when he was younger. I sure
didn't know all that other stuff. I do remember there is another
amino acid that when it's taken as well they cancel each other out.
Going to have to do a Google search on this. Thanks!

At least Kayla isn't a stress eater. Between the puppy visiting most days
and Jake being confined to the house and thoroughly ticked about his e
collar.
There are various water sources on the floor all around the house and out on
the patio to make sure both Jake and the puppy get plenty of water. Its
important given the hot dry windy weather we've been having.
Kayla goes from bowl to glass to dish trying to drink all the extra water.
It's not like she doesn't have a huge bowl of her own inside and one of
those things you lick on an outside faucet and another huge bowl under that
because it leaks. And ice cubes because she likes to chew them.
I'm starting to worry that her water intake is too high.
