It has been raining today, and the worms have crawled up from the soil
onto the paved part of my patio (why do they do that??? Why do they
leave their cosy moist soil and crawl onto hard surfaces? And when the
rain stops they shrivel up and die?). This smart worm stayed in the
crack between tiles so that Miranda couldn't quite reach it (or maybe
she didn't *really* want to catch it...):

When the soil gets really saturated they have to come up or drown. Their
tunnels flood. Ending up on something other than dirt once they come up is a
common mistake.
Yesterday I really enjoyed watching the robins in the back yard. I had run
the sprinklers a little to long so it was really wet. The robins will hop
across the grass, stopping every so often to tilt their heads and listen for
worm movement
They do the same thing after it rains.

you always know that head thing they do when they see a bug or worm.
It's completely different from greebling gazing. She was very delicate

If it moves, cats must investigate it. Instructions from the Mothership.
BTW - worms prefer to come out of the soil when it rains - that way if it
rains hard or for very long, they won't drown. heaven knows why they don't
go back into the soil when it stops raining, and end up getting baked and
looking like fried onion strips.....

Considering they knew to get out of the rain, wouldn't the same logic
apply to getting out of the sun? Well, earthworms aren't known for their
intellectual process. It's a good thing they're cute. :)

What adorable pics! I love when they are inquisitive.
I'm sure the bits would LOVE worms if they ever met any. They are
really into the pigeon nest on our new balcony.

I love that intensity and patience they exhibit at times. And the tentative

I, too, have to wonder why they come out on the pavement only to die. Mir
is such a pretty. Tag, you're it! Yeah, like worms know what that's about!
Persia is so happy that I'm now devoting all my time to her. She's acting
like I didn't ignore her but still sticking close to Peaches' cage just in
case I run off to a restaurant or something. Had some funny restaurant
experiences. Never got hugged by a Chinese woman before for saying the food
was good. Um, you're welcome?
Mir is so pretty, as is Caliban. Poured down rain here today, nasty
thunderstorms and lightning strikes practically wiped out my PC. Had to do
the system restore point thing again. Ahhhh! I'm just having some chicken
soup for dinner.

That! I've experienced right here in the US of A. Chinese people are
usually a little more reticent so it was a surprise.

When I first saw the title, I thought it said Mere Earworm! So I wondered
what Mere had been listening to? :-)

Whereas I invented an antecedent to that subject line, which went like
this: "We thought it was a snake, but it was a....
... Mere Earthworm".

Hehe. Mere hails back to when Mir was a kitten and I first adopted her.
She had been named Cashmere when they still thought she would be a
showcat, and was called Mere for short. When I adopted here, I posted
about her all the time, of course, and usually called my posts 'Mere
this' and 'Mere that'. Sometimes, I still revert back to that behaviour.
;) Tak even wrote a nice little poem about her when I was still waiting
to bring her home:
"C'mere, Mere, come home tonight with mere. You are not a mere cat,
nor a meercat, but you are Mere cat. "

I do remember that. And as soon as I realized the post was from you,
I knew it was about Mir-mir.

That's cute! I don't think I've seen that before.
