I tried to upload a new version of my modes tutorial yesterday.

Don't bother looking for it.

Don't bother looking for the old one either.  All there is on the
site is a truncated bit of it.

Demon have changed their homepage service (presumably outsourced
it, there can't be much of the company they haven't outsourced by
now).  The result is a sharp decrease of effective disk quota,
since they have increased their blocksize and started generating
vast volumes of log data (in itself quite useful stuff) which is
stored *in the user's own space*.  And there is no way at all that
I can even find how much space I've got on the machine I normally
use for managing my pages - those logs take up several megabytes
but don't tell you how much disk space you've used or got left.

I haven't added anything new but I am now over quota thanks to all
that bloat Demon added last week.  Any attempt to fix the situation
makes it worse - I deleted a couple of large files, but then tried
to update the relevant indexes to remove dead links, with the effect
of simply zeroing the indexes and making even more stuff inaccessible.
I have no way to find out what I can delete to get my pages into an
internally consistent state.

It took me an hour of chasing around support lines (there is no direct
number for homepage support) before I finally found a woman in India
who knew something, but not enough to tell me where to look to find my
disk usage.  Demon obviously didn't bother outsourcing that page of
the documentation to her.

f.ck them.  I've been with Demon since a 1200 baud modem was usual
and they had 14 modems for the whole of Scotland.  After that length
of time it's very inconvenient to move, since my Demon URLs and email
addresses are in countless places all over the world, but I'm phasing
out my account as from tomorrow.

There will be no future updates of anything, except for links pointing
to a new location when I get that set up - I will delete all my pages
as soon as I have a stable alternative.  Hopefully everything I use
Demon for - email, webpages, news and ADSL - will be sourced from
somebody else in six months.

Followups set to uk.music.folk - demon.support.homepages would be more
appropriate but if you're not with Demon you probably can't access it.

Draw your own conclusions about whether this is a company you'd want
to depend on.

I am pleased to see that you have marshalled your facts very carefully
before making a carefully valued decision.

They have rejigged their Homepages.  Like every other organisation
that does anything of this sort, there are teething problems, and [as
you noticed] a lot of logs on the site that use a lot of room.  These
are temporary and will be removed.

It is hardly the major catastrophe you suggested, and the bad language
was inappropriate.  It is merely a glitch.

Thank you for that.

Checked. Ours is still there in its minimalist state.

I should rather imagine the expletive was very much warranted at the
time.
