I'm f*cking nuts!!!!!

I went to PetsMart today and walked by the adoption center (Sunsmart).  I
saw a little 1-y-o white w/tabby markings female who had been abandoned,
pregnant and just got finished nursing *SEVEN* kittens (she's no bigger than
a kitten herself).  I wasn't hooked until she looked up at me with the
greenest eyes I've ever seen in a cat besides Bandit.  That's it my heart
was hers.

However, that's not the nuts part.  I went home to get Ben so he could see
her and as we were sitting there waiting to fill out the adoption papers we
were next to a cage with two orange-stripey little boys.  Ben said, "You
know I was kind of hoping to get a little kitten...." which lead to, "Look
how cute they play together" which lead to, "You know the one brother left
would be really sad if we took his brother away from him" which led to,
"Well, we have a big house, what's one more cat?"!!!!!!!!!

Picture to follow shortly as soon as we get everyone settled in for the
night!

P.S.  Little mom is a pet slut - a real cuddle bug!

P.P.S.  Names, people, I need name suggestions!!!!!!

...you're bringing home THREE?

CN...you did absolutely the right thing, sib kittens are a joy and a
delight.  They will play with and groom one another their whole lives,
just like Kumani and Tyche.

And you shall name them...

Pete & Repeat.

ROTFLMAOWTIME - you know, I might consider those!

Seriously, I feel good about all three - little momma cat is a sweetheart
and she deserved a good home after being abandone, pregnant.  And the two
little stripey boys were 1 day away from euthanasia in the pound when a
Sunsmart rescuer found them and took them home to foster.

And what the heck, we have a huge house (even though it's falling apart,
cats don't mind that - in fact they feel more comfortable about clawing the
furniture to go by their actions), and we can afford the food and vet costs.
So three little lives that might otherwise have been lost have just been
given the best home they could have ever imagined in their wildest catnip
dreams!  ;>

Yeah, we're suckers, what's new?  LOL

So,, you got the mom *and* the two orange stripey boys? That's so

you got along

Yeah, she would like having that last laugh!  ;>  No cat will ever replace
her in my heart, but she has three contenders for successor!

Seriously, I don't even know what made me stop at PetsMart today - I didn't
need anything from there.  And I was on my way home from a 4 hour dentist
ordeal, it was 2PM and I hadn't eaten anything yet, but *something* just
made me stop today, so yeah, probably Bandit telling me to celebrate her
life by rescuing more lives (I guess no one cat could ever come close to her
highness' badness, so she had to send three!!!).

Awww!

 Ben said, "You

Reminds me of me and Dave who were definitely only having 1 kitten so
we went round to pick the kitten and there were two of them playing
together and then one of them was so all over me I turned to Dave to
say "We have our kitten" as he turned to me to say the same only he
was referring to the other kitten who was shamelessly all over him and
yes we said "It would be a shame to split them up. One will be lonely
without the other one..umm...it can't be that much dearer to have
two...."

That is how we got Fugazi and Isis. To this day I am fairly sure as we
were coming into the house Isis was saying to Fugazi "If you want us
to stay together, play cute for 15 minutes and then you take her and
I'll take him"

Congratulations on the new arrivals!

Eventually the grieving will become "missing them every day."  I never
thought I would get over losing Pollyanna & Minnie, I woke up crying every
day, but it *does* ease in time.  I think of them often as they were truly
both "dogs of my heart"  Now (mostly) only the happy memories remain.
Although I would give everything to have them back even now, I know it's not
possible.
Now here's a thing to think about.  If your cats/dogs/anypets had a very
long lifespan at what point in your life would you have to say "hmmm, I'd
better not get another in case it outlives me."

I recently saw a quote that said something like "Old age is realising you
will never own all the dogs you want to."

Good point and something I have started to think about (approaching 50
seems to have had this effect on me) I have to face that if we are
blessed and our Fabulous Furballs reach 20, which we both hope I will
be 66 and Dave 63 (Yeah he's a toyboy). At that point, I think we
could realistically look to home an older cat (always wanted to do but
somehow there's always been kittens needing homes- when we had the 3
days between losing Isis and calling Belinda, a woman I was working
with and enquiring whether she had found homes for the 5 kittens that
semi feral had in her garden shed- I knew Dave was ready when I came
home (2 days after losing Isis and swearing about having a few months
off before getting more cats) and looking at special needs older cats
including FIV+ but as I say those kittens would have been sold to a
pet shop if we hadn't been there)

Even when I am very old (if I make it that far) I'll volunteer/foster
at a local shelter

Of course if I am old and do have cats I have already got my neice to
agree she will retrieve them and take care of them, the idea being
that I should be able to leave a modest sum to the CPL on the
condition any cats are rehomed or fostered but not PTS unless a valid
vet reason exists

I need to sort that out with CPL at some time...just like I need to
make a will....creepy....at the moment, although under UK law
everything would go to my brothers and I trust both of them to fulfill
my request and give it all to Dave (apart from my private pension,
which already has him as the nominated person) but I guess..

Another thing to think about at 50!

I worry about people who get parrots.  They can live 70 years. Do they leave
them to a relative in their will, or what?

My great aunt got a kitten when she was 80, I thought at the time the cat
would probably outlive her. The cat, Benny, is now 22 years old and still
going strong, my aunt died on the eve of her 100th birthday.

Some pictures of Benny as a kitten.

This is certainly an issue with parrots. Don't they live up to 80 years?

Shortly after we got Kayla, I realized she will probably be our last puppy.
I was sixty and Charlie was seventy.  And it really makes me sad to know it
is unlikely she will live as long as our toy poodles did.

That means that five dogs will last us a lifetime.  Willie lived almost
twenty years.  Brandie only seven, but her two pups lived close to eighteen
years.

I kind of doubt we will ever get another kitten.  There will likely be more
young adult cats in our future, but probably not kittens.

Jo
Enfilade - 25 Jun 2007 01:19 GMT
I don't think I will ever stop taking in cats, because:

My cats are the ones who no one else will take...Smokey was actually /
rejected by a shelter/.  For me to say "I'm 70 so I'm not taking any
more cats" is not just lonely for me, it's a death sentence for them.

Far better for me to keep cats as long as I am able, with the caveat
that I must have someone willing to take them when I die.

I'm not even 30 and I already have an arrangement that if DP and I
both die
(like in a car accident) my father will take the fearsome foursome and
care for them in the manner to which they are accustomed, for the rest
of their natural lives.  Once he hits 70, though, it will be time for
me to seek a new "goddessparent" for my cats.

My biggest fear is that I will become demented, unable to properly
care for them and /not realize it./

I've thought about that, and when I adopted Caliban I knew in my mind
that this is the last kitten I will ever have. If I'm still able to care
for a cat when Mir and Caliban are gone, I will probably adopt an older
cat or two.
