Odessa's coming around

Singh - 04 Nov 2004 05:29 GMT Our little Tsarina is slowly opening up to us, bit by bit. She was sleeping with us last night, but got spooked when I sat up and ran. But this morning we didn't have to hunt her down to eat. She knows where her chow is now, and is becoming more trusting that she'll have her breakfast and dinner regularly.
I just got her health papers today and was shocked to learn that she'd been taken by the shelter as one of five feral kittens found huddled together in the city. Probably their mama was feral too, and either got lost or got killed. Odessa was probably six or seven months old then, and barely weighed two pounds, the poor thing. My husband especially has a new and sudden understanding now. he thought she was scared of him and didn't like him specifically. Now I figure it's just human beings in general; perhaps some of the young hoodlums in the city teased and threw rocks at the kittens or worse. No wonder she was hard to get placed! I figure the previous adopters, other than the allergic one, had lost their patience with trying to socialize a terrified former feral. And no wonder she has trust problems, being taken back to the shelter so many times.
Trust is coming slowly, and each day we see little cracks in the shell where the light peeks out. She no longer hides in the rafters, but has started to sleep near the other cats, out in the open. Odessa was at my husband's feet when the alarm went off this morning. She now eats with the other cats. She doesn't run away so much when I come to her to pet her, and this morning she even showed me her underside. She was purring away. She didn't protest when I picked her up, and she cusses less. Still, sudden motion will spook our little miss, as well as loud noise. Happily, the vet papers showed she is free of all the kitty nasties for which there are no vaccines, and she has developed quite an appetite. In the last couple of days, Odessa has decided that she aspires to be a draft horse, and so eats like one. We were really worried about that, since it seemed for a while that we could not get her to eat.
One of these days I'll get pictures of Odessa and my other babies up here. i just don't know how to do it. I don't have a scanner, nor a digital camera. I suppose I could go to Kinko's and get them scanned and onto a disk. But then, how to get them posted?
Blessed be, Baha

I'm so happy to hear that she's making progress. I don't really need to tell you, since it sounds like you're doing everything right, but patience really is the key. Unfortunately, her early experience of being placed, then rejected, will make her dubious that she has finally found her forever family. Once she learns she's really home, that she can trust and depend on you, her full integration into the family will no doubt be rapid. <snip>

Once that's done, there are quite a few sites that will let you post them free. Besides the alt.binaries.pictures.animals newsgroup, there are three Yahoo groups devoted to RPCA cats where you can post pictures.

Like I told Baha in an earlier message, it's fairly easy to post pix in Yahoo, though you'll have to join first. There are three different Yahoo groups devoted to this group where you can put them. If you want to go that route, I'm sure folks here can help. I don't regularly post pix, but as I remember it was pretty self explanatory once you're in the group. Off the top of my head, go to the group where you want them, click on photos, click on create folder, and then click on add photo. Somewhere along the line you also have to choose to make the folder open to public viewing.
All that may sound like I'm pushing Yahoo, but actually I don't particularly like their set up. I don't post a lot of pix, but when I do I prefer my own site. I don't really keep my site up to date, though - it's a bare bones site with no bells and whistles really designed back in the days when everyone used dial up and the extras just required too much time to download.

Marie Lawrence - 04 Nov 2004 10:51 GMT Before I had a scanner or a digital camera, I took a few photos to the local photo shop, and had them put on a floppy disk. It was not very expensive, and I was able to put them in my computer and send them off as Jpegs. Marie from Oz.

Marina - 04 Nov 2004 14:34 GMT > Our little Tsarina is slowly opening up to us, bit by bit. So nice to hear about Odessa's progress. Frank, too, was returned a couple of times before he and I found each other. He was young enough, though, to not have lost trust in hoomins, and we soon became the best of friends. Their loss, my gain. He's the nicest cat I've ever known. Purrs for Odessa to continue improving like she has.

Enfilade - 05 Nov 2004 00:33 GMT > > Our little Tsarina is slowly opening up to us, bit by bit. When we first brought Smokey in from the woods he didn't eat for the first two days because he was so busy exploring his new home and trying to feel comfortable there. It looks like Odessa is starting to relax and accept that she is safe in your home. She may always be a bit jumpy/edgy from the survival skills she has learned, but it looks like she is beginning to give you the kitty kitty luv...and demand some in return!

Jo Firey - 04 Nov 2004 18:56 GMT Won't those Kodak photo printing machines put the pictures you scan onto a floppy disk if you take one with you? Should be cheaper and easier than Kinko's. I know you can take a disk to one of those machines to print pictures from, and if you edit the picture you can save it back to the disk. I'd take several formatted floppies just in case.

> Our little Tsarina is slowly opening up to us, bit by bit. She was > sleeping with us last night, <snip Stormin Mormon - 06 Nov 2004 02:46 GMT I'm having trouble with ferals, too. My friend Jason and I were having lunch in BK today. The next booth over was a mom and dad, and a girl about th ree years old. She was peeking over the top. Well, so I gave her my best 100 watt smile, and went back to eating. About 30 seconds later, she's hollering and crying her eyes out. And Mom is walking her up and down the aisle, and trying to quiet her.
I asked the Dad if it was my fault. And explained that I'd smiled at her. He said that they don't get out much, and she doesn't have much contact with others. And, the same thing happened last week with someone else.
Guess I can put that on my resume: Terrifier of little girls, with recorded history of causing panic screams and sobs in three year old feral females.
Hey, if things get bad can I move in with you and get a job at your current boiler room sweatshop? with a resume like that, I'd be manager in a month.
When you get a chance, tell Louie not to smile at Odessa, she'll probably scream and cry.

I'm guessing that unless you look like you're from another planet or something, it really wasn't you personally. Do the kids at church find you scary? ;-)

If you do meet the Czarina, please give her scritches for me, if she'll take them.

I may have a chance to meet Odessa tomorrow. The kids at my father's church think he's a riot. He was in church one day, and a little tot in front of him turned around and stared at him. My dad, amused, put his fingers behind his ears, and jiggled his glasses up and down. The kid thought this was a scream, and hooted right out in the middle of the service. After the little disturbance calmed, my dad was called upon to repeat the performance for a full compliment of the kid's brothers and sisters. ;)

Midway through my meal, I looked up to find a little girl, about 18 months old, standing about four feet away and staring at me very solemnly. I have a mustache, and I suspect that she may never have seen facial hair at close range before. I smiled at her, but she stayed very solemn. So, I put my hand up and gave her a little wave, and she waved back at me, then went back to her parents' table.

While dining at a pizza parlor once, Mom & I were surprised by a pice of pineapple that plopped onto our table, seemingly from nowhere. We looked around, and there was a infant-bordering-on-toddler in a high chair at a neaby table, fruit in bith hands (from his mom's fruit salad, she had aparantly given some to him to pacify him while they waited for their pizza), giggling & laughing at some antics of another (older) kid at the table, pumping his arms up & down all the while. Then all of a sudden, another piece of fruit flew out of his/her hands and landed on the floor near us. Mom & I both burst out laughing. The childs mother came over and apologized when she realized what happend (flung fruit), but we said it was no problem - it was entertainment!

I'm not too worried about the older women he flirts with, I'm going to lose him to a child under the age of three. He waves and talks, and they almost always flirt back. Babies adore him. He just has that great mustache, honestly friendly aura, and is totally fascinated by the little ones. Fortunately, parents seem to understand that Rob means no harm and find his attention to his little ones amusing.

Stormin Mormon - 06 Nov 2004 02:48 GMT Can we post pictures in this group? I've got a digital camera, but it's not very good. Maybe if I get out your way during the day time we can take some pics next to the brightly lit window.

Or something at photo island. We'll make it work. Actually, we have two yahoo groups just for posting pictures. They are listed occasionally but I will post them here. You can't find them by searching yahoo because they are semi-private - i.e. if you don't find out about them here you won't know about them and we won't have to worry about weird stuff showing up.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RPCA_Pictures/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RPCAPhotos/
You have to join the group in order to post pictures, but the groups are set up so no mail ever comes from them and as moderator, I could care less who members are. I have never once checked the members list. The whole purpose is just to be able to have a place to point people to for pictures. The primary request is that you modify the files so they are reasonable and don't take up too much space. If they are too large, I will eventually, after a suitable time for people to see the big pics, go in and modify them myself, but never delete them.
