Buster in minimum security

I've been keeping Buster and Dot completely separated the last week,
and I finally decided it's time to let them hear and smell each other
a little better:

I installed a screen in Buster's door, instead of keeping the door
shut all the time.  The extra glass and other things leaning against
the doorway is to keep the two further at a distance, and to allow Dot
to walk by without having to look at Buster.

Dot likes to hiss at the door on her way past. ;)

Great!  There are some pictures in my album of Holly and Duffy checking each
other out through the mesh panel, and you can see the change in their body
language as they adjusted to each other.  I eventually put food on each side
of a platter and slid the platter under the door (which had been cut a
little short to provide for that).  At first, Duffy would eat his and then
his little paw would reach under the door and he would grab Holly's, too.
After a few days, there were eating "together."

I wanted to get a screen door, which would have been cheaper and
probably easier, but I wasn't sure one would fit in my car.  I'm not
sure if I'll be as successful as you were with Duffy and Holly.
Gradual introduction can get cats to accept the idea of sharing
territory, but won't necessarily make them friendly.  As with hoomins,
it's their own choice who they call a friend.

That's a pretty slick set up! I wish I'd been able to do something like
that. Beats the heck out of removing the middle of three stacked baby
gates every time you want to go to the other part of the house. Is that
Dot's Tail? You are sure stingy with pictures.

For good measure :D

Oh, and it took just how long to put a picture of Sugar? :)  I don't
get to take too many pictures of kitties, because I'm not very good at
sitting back and observing them.  If they look cute, I become very
participative. :)

But that is the tip of Dot's tail in the picture.

I forgot to mention that Buster doesn't like his kitty jail at all!
He spends much of his time in there pacing and crying.  I guess that
when he's out he gets to explore and cuddle and play with the cat
charmer, so when he's upset at being confined much of the time.

He does look very cute with his large mittens pressed against the
screen, begging for attention, begging to be let out into his
forever-home.

Do you try to spend a lot of time in the room with Buster?  Also, have you
tried turning on the radio in his room when you are not in there with him?
Finally, what about a Feliway diffuser in his room?  All of those can help.

Don't worry, soon you will be able to have the three of you together.  I
felt guilty when I would leave Duffy, too, but it has definitely been worth
it.

Also, maybe you could move the cat charmer in the room when he's in there?

Well, I don't think that would help, and I don't want to do that.  He
won't normally show much interest in it, unless it's being moved by
the wand.  Also, when he is interested in it, like right after we've
finished a round of play, he has a habit of taking it in his mouth and
chewing and slurping it up like a strand of spaghetti.  Then, when we
do our next round of play, the cat charmer sprays kitty spit all over
the place and sticks to the walls. :)

He doesn't have a radio, although he can hear the TV through the
screen.  Maybe that just makes him want to get out all the more. :)
He's also had his own diffuser since he was confined - there's one in
his room and one in the living room.

I don't spent a lot of time in there with him - when I'm with him,
it's usually in the living room or kitchen, which has more room to
chase the cat charmer, sit on couches, and cuddle.  He's restless, but
a really good boy - almost a perfect companion kitty, I think, except
he's just too good at tripping people with his back and forth leg
weaving technique.

If you can, try to spend some more time with him.  You could take a book to
read or plug in a small TV -- anything so he will know you are with him and
not think that he is just being shut away from the rest of the household.
The suggestion to use a radio is a well-known behavioral technique.  Again,
it gives the cat a sense of companionship.  Many cats especially seem to
like classical music!

It sounds like Buster is going to be a great addition to your home.

lol and awwwwww.

My Trill has always been the one who catches whiff or sight of a new cat
and goes "HIIIIISISSSSSSSS!"  He likes to pretend he is a bad-a**, but
it never lasts very long.  Next thing you know, he's curled up with a
new cat, or playing.
