MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WHBQ FOX13 myfoxmemphis.com)- Police are investigating a hit
and run on Germantown Road. They say a 24-year-old man, who was riding a
bike on the sidewalk, was run over by a truck. The driver didn't stop until
he crashed into a house.
*************************************************
The victim on the bicycle is my nephew, Alex. Just got a phone call with my
brother, Paul (his father). This guy just drove up off the street onto the
curb, ran over my nephew and then plowed into a house. The driver is on his
third DUI and was driving without a license.
Alex was admitted to the trauma unit at the Regional Medical Center in
downtown Memphis. I called. He has multiple broken bones. They haven't
determined whether or not he has any internal injuries; they say there is no
obvious internal bleeding yet. They don't know whether or not surgery
(other than to reset the broken bones) may be required. They moved him from
the trauma area to ICU and are monitoring his condition.
Purrs for my 24 year old nephew, please. He may be a young fool when it
comes to job stuff but he certainly didn't deserve this.

HOW?? (Unless they put him in jail, this time?) He's
already had his license revoked after too many DUI's -
apparently that didn't phase him. (And you can bet he
doesn't have liability insurance, either, even though most
states now require it for auto registration.)

If you are going to drive drunk without a license or insurance, why let a
little thing like registration bother you?
Although it seems this particular drunk is now without wheels.
We had a "typical" drunk driving accident locally a few months ago. With
worse than usual results. A family of six was killed in the accident caused
by a drunk driver. The family was in a van that was hit and run off the
road into a tree. The 23 year old driver of the other vehicle had several
prior drunk driving incidents and was driving a car belonging to his
passenger. They were both unhurt.
But at his trial his friends insist he's really a nice guy when he's not
drinking.

Purrs and prayers working overtime.
This touches a fear since I have two young men just starting to make their
way in a world that isn't safe.
Especially with the 17 year old, I'm all too familiar with the "I want to
kill him/may God and Angels protect him" feeling.
I hope he will heal quickly and without too much pain. That there is no
hidden damage.
I know the fool with no license had no insurance. I hope he has other means
of paying for the damage he has caused.

No one DOES! Purrs for your nephew, of course.
What IS it with all the drivers plowing into houses, lately?
There have been several here, and I've seen them on the
news about other cities, too. Drunk or not, I should think
a HOUSE would be pretty hard to hit unless you were AIMING
at it!!!! True, there was the elderly man in Santa Monica
CA who got confused and hit the accelerator instead of the
brake when approaching a street market, but in most cases,
even drunk, how can you run head-on into a HOUSE? (They
aren't likely to suddenly move into your lane - even when
they're being moved, they don't travel very fast, and these
have all been sitting on their own lots, minding their own
business!):-)

We had a pretty dramatic one a few miles from here: hotel destroyed
in a car crash...

I don't think there was enough left of the driver to tell how
drunk he might have been. Darwin Award material, anyway. The
junction was obvious enough if your IQ exceeded your MPH.

I hate to say it but my parents have been charged (fined) $400 with leaving
the scene of an accident. The dented someones fender in a parking lot on
Sunday and simply drove off. Someone got their license plate number and
they got a phone call from the local constabulary on Monday morning saying
come in, we need to talk. I have NO idea why they just drove away. Dad was
having one of his more lucid moments when he told me about this and I said,
"Tsk Tsk, you KNOW better!" and I swear I could see him hanging his head in
shame through the phone line. They don't know why they just didn't stay
there. It's not like they don't have insurance.

They didn't stay because they are reaching an age when their worst fear is
losing the right to drive. The fear becomes almost a phobia and can
override reason. The dent wasn't the big deal. Staying put and being faced
with young strong healthy authority figures was.
I really hope this was just a minor glitch on their part and not any sign of
something more serious.
