We went to the petstore to buy a stainless-steel dog bowl... but while
we were there John saw one of those pet water fountains and decided
that Tessie would love it. We brought it home and set it up and it was
investigated by all... Tessie spent about an hour dipping her paw in
to prod at the water and shaking it off! And then it was promptly and
totally ignored. :(
I'm very worried because I haven't seen ANYONE drink out of it yet. I
moved their kibble container out into the livingroom next to it to
give them the idea that this is their new feeding station, and there's
been a procession of cats eating, but nobody's touched the water dish!
Since nobody seemed to want to drink from it, I put a plastic dish of
water in the bathroom as a backup, and Tessie tipped it over twice -
she picked it up in her TEETH and made all the water spill out (at
least most of the spillage was caught by the cake tin it was sitting
in...) I came in and cleaned it up and refilled it and put it back,
and thirty seconds later I saw her do it again! And while I was asleep
she must have been playing with the fountain again too, because the
lid to the water reservoir was sitting on her cushion this morning and
it didn't get there by itself. :P
Tessie is still drinking out of the toilet! and I haven't seen Scouty
or Silver drink anywhere at all... :(
I hope we haven't bought a thirty-five-dollar cat toy!

I did read somewhere that cats don't like their food and water too close
together. (Doesn't faze The Fabulous Furballs then again as long as there is
FOOD involved they couldn't care less about anything else)

I read that too. I had the water dish alongside the food dishes with
Frank and Nikki, but they would hardly ever touch it. Then I moved the
water dish into the bathroom, and they started drinking from it. Maybe
Tessie would drink from the fountain if it was somewhere near the
toilet, where she usually drinks?

The kitty water fountain at my house went unused until I gathered both
the fur people into the kitchen, got down on my hands and knees, and
then pretended to slurp from it myself. They got the idea and have
both used it ever since!

And I thought some of the things we do for our dogs and cats would seem
crazy to outsiders.
I'm feeling better about giving Kayla training treats from my mouth.

It took Persia a few days before she started drinking from hers. For the
first few days she was curious but it was this strange *thing*.

Persia's food is in the entryway by the kitchen. The fountain is in my
bedroom. Why? Because she was drinking the running water from the master
bathroom tap and I figured if I kept it close to that she'd get the idea.
She did. But again, it took several days before I noticed her really using
it.

Give it time. Like anything else, it will take some getting used to.

It *will* be a toy, but hopefully, they'll drink from it, too ;) I
wonder sometimes if Dante is defeating its purpose, because he tends
to dump everything that isn't nailed down into it, e.g. crunchy food,
bottlecaps and toy mousies.

Dante is like a little kid throwing blow-up toys into a swimming pool :)

That's kind of cute! Tessie doesn't drop things into her water - she
just sticks her paw into it and splashes around... she was playing
with it again today and I was glad to see it - at least that means
she's not ignoring it ENTIRELY!

Karen,
I suspect you're not going to want to hear this story, but I'm going
to share it anyway. I have two of the Drinkwell Pet fountains and
Hobbes, Selena, Lacey and Sam drank from them without any problem.
Then along came Barnabus (sounds like a song "Along Came
Barnabus....alright, earbug....what was the name of that song? Ahhh,
should have known, Along Came Jones a Ray Stevens song)
Anyhow, along came Barnabus who has to know how everything works.
First he removed the top from the reservoir, somewhat like Tessie is
doing now. Then he decided the filter was a toy and he would take the
filter out and play with it. Finally one day I watched as he pulled
the filter out except it caught and he tipped the entire thing over
and it dumped the entire reservoir of water onto the floor before I
could get to it and turn it back right side up. At that point I
unplugged both units as every day he'd pull both filters out and I was
concerned that we'd be at work and he'd empty all the water and the
pump would overheat causing a fire.
But that's just Barnabus. Hopefully he and Tessie haven't been
discussing ways to make the hoomans crazy :)

I sure hope that that little brainwave never occurs to Tessie! I could
just see her trying a stunt like that... and then she'd think it was
the greatest game in the world and repeat it ten times a day.
I didn't really want to buy her this thing because it was so
expensive... John insisted that it was 'the answer' to making her
happy. So now we have it, and we have to buy them a dog bowl too
because Scouty and Silver won't go near it. They're drinking out of a
saucer in the craftroom now...
I love the girls but they're so fussy... We've spent fifty dollars on
them this week and we still haven't solved the problem. :( Anybody
want an almost-brand-new kitty fountain, and a panic mouse minus the
pompom? (sighs)

Miranda likes to dunk her toys in the water dish - mostly mousies and
balls. Hmm, now that I think of it - those are Caliban's toys. Mir
prefers string toys. Mir is really growing into a mean big sister. :P

Someday the pottery drinking bowl of my cats broke, and searching in
the cupboard
for something to replace it I ended up with my grandma`s beautiful
crystal bowl
which I never used before.
And - my cats love to drink water from it. I believe they prefer
glassware or even
better, crystal ware to plastic for drinking from.
Later I read that crystal keeps the water energy and keeps it longer
fresh.
So I decided to leave the bowl to the cats. What is it good for
standing in the
cupboard anyway?

I can only say again buy a *ceramic* large dog bowl. It's impossible to tip
up and there is always water to drink available for the kitties.
Mine drink from a "spaniel bowl" which is inclined in at the sides so
spaniels don't get their ears in it, but any pottery dog bowl will do. You
are just wasting money, Karen, by buying "this is great for my cat"
thingies.
I just tip the water out every day and refill, wipe it around inside with a
clean cloth daily, with antibac stuff on once a week, rinse under a running
tap (faucet) and refill.

'I' didn't buy it - John did! And now we're stuck with it because I'm
pretty sure that 'my cats won't drink out of it' is not an acceptable
reason for returning it to the store...
We'll be buying a stainlesssteel dog bowl when we got shopping on the
weekend.

I would definitely recommend ceramic over stainless steel as they are so
much heavier. I think you need Great Dane size for your girlies!
Or even a 4 pint casserole dish perhaps if you can get one cheaply from a
car boot sale? I think it's nice to give these things another life ;-)
It's so easy to buy in to "your cat needs this expensive drinker" or any
other stuff that the shops want to sell. Their advertising makes you think
you are a bad meowmie otherwise.
Basically, they need something to drink from that they cannot tip up. If it
is an open drinker you will have to clean and refresh it daily. It takes
less than two minutes.
The best drinker I have for tiny poultry chicks when they are just learning
to drink at a couple of days old is the top of a old toilet cistern. It is
around 12x5 and around threequarter inch deep. They cannot drown in it and
neither can they miss noticing it. I have plenty of conventional "bought"
chick drinkers, with tiny troughs around a water dispenser but they can miss
how to drink from it at first if I am not careful. So - I have found that
improvisation is better.

Stainless steel is too light if you don't want them tipping it. Get a
crock. A big deep crock.

Jill is right about the crock. I use a flat-bottom Fiesta serving bowl -
not only is it heavy and tip-proof but it keeps the water cool and is
extremely easy to clean (I've also used Corning Ware casserole dishes but
love the Fiesta colors.) .......Lorna

I just put out a glass pie dish for now... Tessie's checked it out and
done the paw-splashing thing, but I defy her to move that! lol I'd
prefer something unbreakable because I'm clumsy... but we'll see how
this works out.
