Betty's successors in hiding

Takayuki - 15 Jun 2007 22:33 GMT I've brought home two kitties from the shelter named "Dot" and "Burt". I've closed off a lot of rooms, but they seem to be in hiding right now anyway. :) Where did they go!?
Cantate - 15 Jun 2007 22:43 GMT Congratulations!
And don't worry-- they'll turn up when they're hungry.

Takayuki - 15 Jun 2007 22:57 GMT >Congratulations! > >And don't worry-- they'll turn up when they're hungry. > >Cantate (still trying to entice the Bitty to come in) I found Dot under a sofa. She accepted scritches while Burt was looking over my shoulder like "whatzat daddy?" She ventured closer to me and seemed to be trying to roll over to show her belly, but she's too fat to do that in that tight space. :) I left the skirt propped up a little with a cushion so that she could watch Burt scratching his post and playing with his toys.

Wow! Really? Congratulations. Don't worry, they will come out eventually. They will need to eat and visit the litter box at some point. They are just scared.

I'm surprised that Burt, a small 1 year old male, has come out of hiding first. He was the much shyer of the two at the shelter when I introduced him to Dot as a possible companion for her. He's now playing with power cords, showing his belly, and accepting lovins. Dot, a slighly chubby (13 lbs) 7 year old girl who was so outgoing at the shelter is nowhere to be found. I occasionally see a flicker out of the corner of my eye as she skillfully moves from one hiding spot to another. :) She'll come around.
Maybe these two will come to like one another. I chose them because they happened to be in nearby cages, and Dot's tag said that she liked other cats, and Burt's tag didn't specify whether he liked other cats, but he seemed very mellow for such a young cat.
The shelter person later clarified though that by "like" other cats, they actually mean that she has a lot of experience hissing at other cats out of jealousy. Oh well. But help! What do I need to know about introducing these two? They know each other casually from having tentatively interacted for about half an hour in a quiet room at the shelter, and so far, they both seem to be independently and alternately hiding and exploring, so they've only made note of each other and haven't really done much else...

When you pick her up, she feels even heavier than she looks. :) I'm curious about why it's a bad idea to get a kitty who looks like a RB kitty. When I look at Dot and Burt, I can see in my heart that neither of them are Betty, and the appearance doesn't matter. I want them both to be happy, but it's a challenge trying to give them both the hoomin attention they crave!

I wish Dot and Burt LONG and VERY happy, extremely HEALTHY lives with you, Tak. Good for you for taking home adult kitties who might otherwise have had a hard time getting adopted. May they reward you with love for many years to come.

Congratulations!

Well, it sounds like they are doing OK. Most likely because they have come together at the same time, it will also be ok and boy/girl combinations seem to get on pretty quickly. Do a lot of sitting on the floor.

I'd think that since they're both on an even footing (as in, came into your house at the same time and there aren't any other resident felines), you don't have to do anything special to introduce them to each other... they'll take care of it themselves. :)
And congratulations on opening your home to more furry masters!

Unless one shows real aggression for the other, I'd say let them sort it out for themselves. Mine even seem to have worked out who gets laptime, when - I just stay out of it, and pet whoever decides it's her turn.

Congrats, Tak! I've been hoping for the longest time that you'd feel like taking in a couple more waifs.
As for acclimating to each other, it's quite normal for Dot to be the slower to adjust to sharing a house and a slave with another cat. In my experience, the older cats have had more of a chance to get used to being an only-cat. I suspect that they'll be getting along just fine within a week. And in this next week it's unlikely that they'll do any serious fighting, most likely they'll just do some hissing to establish who is top cat. And Dot will most likely come out of hiding within just a few days. When Nancy and I moved with the cats, Cleo and Tabitha were pretty much invisible for a week, and Sammy was usually only sighted when he was dashing from hiding place to hiding place.

I guess I sound a little overanxious, but I've never had two cats before. Burt, who seemed the smaller and shyer one seems to have surprisingly taken the initiative, having claimed the whole house for himself. He is concentrating on following Dot and keeping her confined to corners and under furniture.
Maybe it wasn't a good idea to bring them both together. Individually, they're both friendly and easy to handle. I've carried them both around the house, and Burt and Dot have both tried to claim my lap at separate times. Maybe they're both only-kitty types?

> Okay, maybe I should just be quiet and leave them alone. Go to the pet store and get a Feliway diffuser. You plug it into the wall and it emits kitty feel-good pheremones and calms them down. I'm a True Believer now that I've installed one. Smudge and Licky still don't like each other much, but the volume and intensity of the squabbling has really decreased. It might be the perfect thing to help your two get to know each other in a calmer atmosphere.
Also, it's probably better that you got them together - this way, the territory doesn't really belong to either of them. So there's not an already-established cat trying to protect its territory against the newcomer. Instead, they will both carve out their niches at the same time.
I can understand that it's scary not knowing what will happen. Most likely, though, they will hiss and growl at each other for a while, but then will probably make friends, or at least, learn to tolerate each other.

[quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > >Okay, maybe I should just be quiet and leave them alone. They'll figure it out Tak... It's not surprising that the little boy is flinging himself into exploring his new home - at one year old he's still really a kitten... the older cat is much more cautious and set in her ways, but she'll adapt too. Hopefully it will end up with Dot (as the larger, older and more experienced cat) at the top of the pecking order and the kitten put in his place...

He promptly claimed the prime armchair spot by a sunny window in the largest room in the house and stayed there for a week before any of the other cats dared set foot in the same room. He didn't even need to hiss.
He had previously terrorized a family of four Somalis, and that takes some doing. His home before that (he got moved on a lot when he was little) had been with rabbits. They must have been like the one in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Now he gets on fine with the others. Doesn't snuggle up to them much but they're happy to share the same bed.

Unless they're growling and spitting and threatening to kill each other, a few days in the same environment should sort things out nicely - it's mostly a matter of establishing "pecking order", and you've already made a good start in getting a boy and a girl, instead of two of the same sex.

However, when Friskie went into his own box to sleep, little Tiggy would try to crawl in with him. Friskie would spit and sweat and Tiggy would back off. After a few tries, Tiggy succeeded in curling up with ?Friskie without waking him. When Friskie finally woke up and found him there he started grooming him. After that they were best buddies. Two cats are fun to watch. Best wishes for a happy household. MLB

They're just enjoying the attention--I imagine they haven't had one-on-one (or one-on-two!) human attention in a while. They'll settle in. Bosley was an awful leg-rubber, I tripped on him constantly. Now he only does it when he's hungry. Good luck! Loved the videos & pics. Sherry

I saw that after I replied to your intial post. They are lovely :) Don't worry, they'll learn to get along just fine. It's all very new to them (and to you!).

Awwwww, Tak, this is the best news I've heard all week! I am so very happy for you, Dot and Burt. They'll get used to each other soon, just remember for every step forward there may be two steps backwards. I remember when I brought Selena home and I would think that she and Hobbes were getting along only to find them hissing and growling 30 minutes later. Everything is going to be fine. Relax and enjoy both of your new babies.

Since this is Dot and Burt's first night in their new home, I say give them time to get acclimated. It's new sounds, new smells, a new home and a new human and another cat to get used to all at once. Hissing is better than outright biting scratching screaming fights. They'll sort out their pecking order come around. One thing I tried when Izzy and Pan were scared new babies in their first home, was to sit down on the floor in the same room with them, and wait. Soon, little faces were peering around the corner, and before long they were creeping close to get a better look and sniff at me. If they'll already accept scritches and love from you, I think you can be confident that all will ultimately be well. =o)
What lucky kitties to come home with you! What a good hoomin they picked! I'm sure Betty would be VERY pleased you've opened your heart and home to them.

Congratulaions! I'm so glad that you are now owned again :-) Dot and Burt are probably hiding in another dimension while they check you out, very soon they'll be all over you.
I hope we see lots of stories, photos and videos over the coming months and years.

Tak, we are so happy for you and of course for Dot and Burt:-) They are lovely cats. Thanks for sharing the videos and pic:-)
They will take over the house in no time. From all you wrote until now, I guess, they will settle just nicely:-) It is a normal cat thing, what is going on at your home.
Congratulations that you are a slave again:-) I'm sure, Betty is pleased to see you happy again and is happy for Dot and Burt to have found such a good home:-)

Lesley - 16 Jun 2007 15:23 GMT Hooray Tak!!!! As everyone is saying this is the best news all week!
They're both lovely cats and I wouldn't worry that they seem to be keeping away from each other a bit, This has been a long day for both of them and this is their new home so they have to sort out the important stuff like the places that are best for a prolonged snooze.
Also as there aren't any cats already in residence that should make things easier
As for the fact they vanish...well.....I know the Fabulous Furballs are in the flat somewhere. The food level in the bowl has gone down and I am sure I had crunching noise, Dave tells me he saw Sarsi walk past towards the kitchen but I last saw a cat two hours ago. It's the afternoon and time for a seriously long nap and I could probably find them if I needed to but in my experience it's best to let sleeping cats lie
Like me just say again, I am sooo glad for you and of course, for two very fortunate shelter kitties whose lives have just taken a mega turn for the better

They will get used to each other in a very short time.

Baha - 18 Jun 2007 20:17 GMT HOLY $#*+!!!!! You got new babies! Congrats to the lucky new daddy and the lucky little ones who will get so much kitty love that they won't know what to do with it, so they play games like "Hide from Daddy." It's a simple game, the object of which is multifold: the little ones hide from Daddy and get used to their new home, and then they get all the fun of listening to Daddy scratch his head and make funny noises that have one syllable and four letters. Then they'll turn up and give you a little meowie and a nose-kiss and of course you'll forgive them for giving you palpitations. Are either of them little tuxies? I'm a sucker for formalwear.
Blessed be, Baha
