I took Lindy in for her annual shots today.  She is down to 6.9 lbs.  Last
year she weighted 7.6 lbs.  I knew she seemed thin, but her fur is shiny,
she has a good appetite, and even has playful spells, even though she's over
13 years old.

The vet said that there are three possible things that could cause the
weight loss while she still seemed healthy - thyroid, kidneys or leukemia.
Her thyroid doesn't seem to be enlarged, but one kidney is larger than the
other.  Anyway, she ran blood tests (the total bill came to over $300, even
with the senior discount), and will let me know the results Monday.

This would be worrying enough, although I find it hard to believe she's very
sick, because she certainly doesn't act it.  In fact, she purred most of the
time we were in the vet's office.  However, I'm leaving early Monday morning
and will be gone for nine months.  It's something I can't change.  My
next-door neighbors are good about feeding and playing with my cats, but
I'll be extra concerned while I'm gone.

Purrs on the way for this to be nothing more than Lindy getting a little
older.  I trust your neighbors will have a way to reach you 24/7 if need be?
and that they have all the vet info and access to emergency care after
hours.

Thanks, for the purrs.  Yes, my neighbors have the phone number where I'll
be, as well as the numbers of my kids, who live within an hour's drive of
here.  They have animals, so they have vet contacts.  However, I'll give
them the information on my vet.  I asked the doctor to email me the results
of the blood tests.  If I don't hear from her by Tuesday, I'll email her.

Big  purrs for Lindy and her tests-- she may be fine-- many cats just
lose some weight as they get older.  Stinky is a bit skinnier than he
was a few years ago,  but he is still in kicking health, knock wood.

Purrs and gentle headbutts (x4) for you and Lindy. I know you'll be

town won't help.  Let us know, if you can, what the tests results

Many purrs for Lindy, I hope her tests all come back ok.
But you are leaving for 9 months?!?  Why can't you just take them with
you?  Are they staying at the neighbour's house or are the neighbours
just coming to check on them for the whole time?

Some cats do get skinnier as they get older, Isis (RB) dropped a pound
or so when she was 13 but all the tests came back clear and the vet
said sometimes older cats can't metabolise fats as well (or something
like that- at the time, having gritted my teeth for bad news I was too
busy feeling immense relief) .One of my cat books suggests mixing a
teaspoonful of lard into meals if an older cat is excessively bony but
only on occasions as it interferes with metabolism of certain vitamins

Yet another example of feline superiority- Hoomins put weight on as
they get older and cats lose it!

Purrs for Lindy to be okay

Absolutely, Joy.  Purrs for you and Lindy.  Hope the blood tests aren't
anything remarkably bad, and that the weight loss may even be a normal
part of aging for her.

(I stuck in the asterisks, for emphasis.)

OK, it's clear now that you meant to say nine *days*. But when I first
read this, I just assumed that you were going on an extended visit up
there. Although I have to say that it seemed rather sudden that you were
doing this, considering all the planning you would have to do. And I did
wonder why you weren't bringing your cats, but I also just assumed that
there was some reason you couldn't.

I'm reposting this mostly because I'm happy that my reading skills aren't
as bad as I feared they were. :)

Now, my *thinking* skills are another matter. Why on earth did I take
this literally? I guess I was just focusing on other things and didn't
take the time to question my rather absurd conclusion.

In any case, I hope you had a good trip up there and that Lindy is glad
to see you now that you're home!

I noticed the 9 month trip too and actually questioned it in my reply.
But I never got a response.  So I was wondering why no one else was
worried about this huge long 9 month trip.  Then I started to assume
that it must be 9 days instead and everyone else hadn't clued in.  Oh
well.

Speaking of many-month projects, how's it going with the house? It
must be getting close to completion by now.

The house is going ok, but frustratingly little has been done in the
last month.  The roof is complete and the windows should be going in
early next week, then the drywall.  Which leaves me to do all the
interior painting while Dennis is away and we will do the tiling
together in August.  Should be finished sometime in October.

I was wondering why on EARTH a catlover would be willing to leave
their animals alone in a house for the best part of year... but I
figured that it was something utterly unavoidable and urgent and she
was doing her best for them under the circumstances. Nine days is more
like it!

Oh my gosh. I wondered what she was going to DO for nine months. I
seriously had thoughts of scientific exploration or some such. This
makes much more sense now.

The longest I've ever left my cats is four weeks, and I can do that only
because my next door neighbors take care of them.  My son also checks on
them when I'm gone that long.  I'm sure he'll do that when I go to Australia
for three weeks in October.

I had a commitment - my sister's son was getting married, and I had promised
to take care of her two Golden Retrievers while she and her husband went to
the wedding and associated festivities.  Not only had I committed to do
that, but she had paid for my ticket to fly from Southern California to
Alaska.  If I had just been going on a nine-day vacation, I'd have
rescheduled it until I was sure Lindy would be okay.

So you weren't searching for new species of Alaskan wolves through the
