Visiting the shelter

I had a sudden urge to visit the local shelter today!  This is the
same shelter where I adopted Betty.  I took a lot of pictures and some
videos, but right now I have to run to meet someone for dinner and a
movie, so here are just a few:

I'm glad you went, Tak.  What lovely kitties!  That shelter looks
pretty good.

I'm just a TAD concerned about the Tuxedo cat with the yellow collar.  Could
be just a lot of furr but that collar looked a bit too tight to me.
Shouldn't you be able to easily wiggle a couple of fingers in there?

He was so high up I couldn't check him. :)  But the shelter staff
there are very attentive, so I wouldn't worry.

His fur did look like it was very fluffy. Nikki used to look strangled
when she had her harness on, but that was because her fur was medium
long. I always made sure I could put two fingers between the harness and
her neck.

The one with the white mustache is so incredibly cute! The orange one
(Sophie?) looks like a cross between Sammy and Harri. And Katya almost
looks like Ranger's sister.

Katya looks like Persia when she acquired me! :)  But I see they have a
PERSIA!  Can't see the cat, though unless she's the one under the cat tree.

Katya is a small cat.  It's hard to tell proportions with her by
herself in a cage, but she has a tiny head, yet her tag says that she
had kittens!  Persia is either the head or the butt under that tree -
that's not one cat, but two. :)  Persia's description is here:

That Persia *sounds* like mine (remember, my Persia had Fancy Feast as a
treat) but mine is a lot older and looks like a fat Katya :)  Grey/blue with
green eyes.

First, I was trying to coax him down, and then I wanted to take a
picture of him peeking suspiciously over the edge of the platform, and
then when I finally took the picture, he was stretching his shoulders.

Wow, I guess the cats get to spend a fair amount of time outside of
their cages? Long enough to go into serious napping mode, anyway.

Nice pictures!

They do that at 'The House of Mews' in Midtown, Memphis, Joyce.  In fact,
the only ones in cages are the ones who are questionable about socializing
with other cats (and new arrivals).  The kittens are in a separate
glassed-in room with a similar arrangment.

The cats run all over the place; it's really fun to watch.  It's an old
store front and they lounge in the windows in the sun, on cat-trees, on
beds, in boxes, etc.  They have toys galore.  All volunteer staff and some
funds taken in from people like me (when I can afford to).

www.houseofmews.com

It's where I took Spotty when I grabbed his skinny butt.  They paid for all
vet services, cleaned him up, a few additional vet services as he got
diarrhea from not eating regular food.  But they had him adopted out in a
matter of a week or so.

I sure hope his new family is taking good care of him.  They didn't seem too
literate when I communicated with them but then that could have just been a
computer generation gap.  The House of Mews screens people pretty closely.

But, how perfect!  All the animal shelters I know of are out on the
edge of town to where it's a special trip.  It's the darn pet stores
with their puppy mills and backyard breeders of kittens and puppies
that are in the mall or in storefronts on Main St.

I *hate* the muzak on The House of Mews site!  But I love this:

"PEPPER is a ten year old Registered Abyssinian with a fine pedigree
background with papers from the International Cat Association. We must,
sadly, find a home for him due to our expanding business and travel
necessities.
Pepper was diagnosed in September of 2006 with diabetes which we have
controlled with regular insulin injections twice a day, including a special
diet.

We are willing to provide the cost of insulin, syringes and his special food
for one year if necessary.

If you are able to help us with a loving home for our special cat we would
be most grateful. We would also pay the costs of shipping to another state."

How many shelters would do that?  And this place is a non-profit
organization, staffed by volunteers (including volunteer veterinarians).
Amazing!  I see they relocated (but just up the street) from where I took
little Spotty.

I love this old photo from the original location:

That's the cool thing about the place, Jo.  If they don't get adopted they
just live out their lives there, lounging around with the other kitties.  I
urge anyone who visits Memphis to drop in and take a look around.  I
definitely need to take a look at their new digs - apparently they needed
more space!

The cats are actually not really out, but are in dedicated kitty
rooms.  There are actually two or three more doors between them and
the actual lobby!  The place is structured like a cleanroom, with
rooms within rooms, lots of them.  The cats on the chairs are in a
room dedicated to calm cats all napping together.  Opposite it is
another mirror-image room dedicated to playful cats wrestling and
chasing each other.

That's great. At a shelter where I volunteered a few years ago, they
had some little rooms like that. Volunteers could take kitties out of
their cages and bring them into the room to stretch their legs, move
around, and play a bit. But they couldn't just stay there. The rooms
were there primarily for potential adopters to spend some time with a
cat or small dog. I worked there after hours, so the place was closed
to the public, making those rooms available to me. You'd never find
a cat napping in them, though. They weren't there long enough to settle
down and curl up.

I love the idea of the "quiet room" and the "rowdy room". :)

There were some rooms like that, that were smaller and had more hoomin
oriented furniture, so that prospective slaves could get comfy with a
resident or two.  They really expanded the place since the last time I
was there, and I was gratified to see lots of cages that were empty.

Why two?  It worked out well for a while having one kitty. :)  It
sounds like it would be twice as much work!

It's been a long time since I'd been to the shelter.  All those
kitties are unique individuals, aren't they?  None of them are Betty.
I found Betty there four years ago, but she's no longer there - she
was adopted, lived, and died.  I guess she will never reappear.

Betty will always be around, Tak.She's the breeze that blows through
your hair when the air is still, she's the sunbeam that falls on your
bed in the morning when the weather is cloudy, and she's the shadow
you see in the corner of your eye as you turn around and think "who
was that". Betty hasn't died, she lives on in a very special place in
your heart. She took a huge part of your heart when she travelled to
the bridge because you loved her so much, but she made sure that she
left a legacy that will mean you can appreciate and love a new owner
in a different way.

A Torite madam, Polly, was my first "heart cat". I loved her so much
it actually hurt. When she died of Feline Leukemia aged 2, I never
thought that I could have another owner after her and missed her in
the same way that you miss Betty. Then, out of the blue, HRFL Tiger
marched into my life and became my new heart cat. I love him just as
much as Polly, but in a different way, if that makes sense? Don't
close your heart to a new owner because they are not Betty, because
Betty will always be with you.

THey are not as much work really because they have each other too. I
know you travel some as well, and they are more contented with another
kitty there for company. Even Pearl and Sugar seem to always be quite
near each other even though they aren't real big friends. And let me
tell you two kitties are really fun to watch. Even Pearl and Sugar have
their "evile sister antics" but kitties who like each other are really
fun to watch. Think of Mir and Caliban, for instance.

As a two-owner slave, I can honestly say I don't find having two cats
burdensome.  If one of them is ignoring me, I can get attention from
the other. While I'm gone, they keep each other company.  Twice the
love, twice the purrs, and maybe half again as much work as one. Betty
cannot be replaced, but she CAN have worthy successors. I think she's
trying to tell you something, Tak!

We've had a lot of cats over the years, and by the time we were
looking for homes for Marblecake's kittens we decided they were
*not* going anywhere singly - we rehomed them as two pairs, and
turned down a lot of people who wanted just one kitten.  Cats
never form such a close relationship in later life as with their
littermates.

> Betty cannot be replaced, but she CAN have worthy successors.
> I think she's trying to tell you something, Tak!

Tak has enough love to handle a vanload of cats.  But a pair would
be a good start.

One very good and selfish reason for two or more is that you are more likely
never to be left alone and bereft again.  There is nothing like a fur kid to
hang on to when you have a loss of any kind in your life.  They grieve to,
but usually only for a very short time.

Yes, you will have to decide what you want. If you are looking for
Betty, you should probably stop going to the shelter. If you are looking
for a cat to love and be loved, keep going.

I have learned over the years to look at the glass as half full in
regards to kitties that have left this earth. I am so grateful that they
were in my life, more grateful that they were here than sad that they
had to leave.

Katya is small and fine boned, which I thought made her similar.

Yes, and her face is very similar. It kills me to see a Mir-look-alike
in a cage, knowing how much Mir loves galloping around, scaling cat
trees and climbing her wall panel. I hope Katya gets to come out of the
cage now and then.

Congrats, Tak for taking the first step.  You *know* Betty would want

I was really happy to be with the kitties while I was there.  But when
I came home, to Betty's home, I realized that none of them were Betty,
and that each one was different.  I loved Betty, and I don't think I
could love anyone else exactly the same way.

Of course not, but you could love one in a different way.  Something sent
you to take a look.  May have been Betty who sent you :)

I think you're right, you couldn't love anyone else exactly the same way,
but I'm sure you could love another cat just as much in a different way.

You'll never love another cat the same way. I don't think I'll ever love
a cat as deeply as I loved Frank. Sometimes, when Caliban snuggles into
my arms, it just makes me miss Frank all the more. But mostly Caliban
and Mir make me happy, though my feeling for them might not be as deep
as what I felt for Frank. All the cats in my life have left me with
different feelings. If you think about it,. it's only natural, because
they are all different, so your feelings for them will be different. I
hope this makes some sense, it sems a bit muddled to me. :)

I was thinking that it might be like that with me, so I wasn't sure it
would be a good idea.  I sense that having cats in the house could be
a constant reminder that Betty is gone, and it could be a very sad and
depressing existence.

No, actually, I think it really works to help us understand more about
our place. I miss Grant soooo much and I soooooo wish he was with me,
but you know, I was never really a gung ho wanter of Pearl. Sugar and
Grant were a wonderful balance and such easy cats and loved each other.
However, I really couldn't imagine my life without Pearl and her 'tude.
She is almost like having another person in the house. She is demanding
and bossy and yet, she is such a GOOD cat in so many ways. My
relationship with her is just totally different than any other cat I
have ever lived with. And she was a pain in the butt with Sugar for so
long, but the finally worked soemthing out and while not cuddle
kitties, they are hilarious together much of the time. I guess I kind
of live in wonderment of how many ways we love and what each kitty
relationship is like and its nuances. I love the way each has their own
little habits. Sugar has to always go chew on a certain toy before she
eats. She pokes at me for attention. Her fur is ubersoft and her face
and eyes so round and bright. I just want to eat her up. Pearl is the
ultimate in outrageousness. She must at least sniff anything I eat. She
is single minded and bossy. The other day, she woke up and was all
sleepy, but with eyes half closed marched right past me on the way to
the scratching pole in the living room. She looked for all the world
like someone who was saying "Not until I have my coffee". "Not until I
get my scratching in."  You can't imagine how much they fill up my
life. Sure, I miss Grant, but I also wouldn't want to "replace" him
with a duplicate.

On the other hand, having a new kitty or two to take over your life might
well help to lift your spirits. Betty is gone, but having new masters
could well help you to deal with that by reminding you that you got to
share some wonderful times with Betty, and show you that Betty's spirit
lives on and continues to love you.

And, well. you get busy, and the cats get busy.  You all get busy
discovering each other, and the cats get busy discovering their new
house, which is a huge deal to them.  It's fascinating to watch them
discover everything, and especially at that young age-- past
bittyhood, but still somewhat kitten-like--  they're tremendous fun.

I don't know about you, Tak, of course, but if I were presently
without cats, I would grab a pair like that.  But the only way you're
going to find out how kitties will affect you would be just to take
the plunge, and I sense you're still reluctant to do that.

If it were a little different-- if Simba and Sophie suddenly turned up
on your doorstep, would you turn them away?  I doubt it.  You'd take
them right in.  And then, there you'd be.  You wouldn't have time to
do all this thinking.  You'd be plunged right into it-- into the
busy-ness-- and the ridiculousness and fun and silliness and purring
and playing.

I agree with Dan. Tak, you've got a lot of love to give to a lucky
cat--or two! We know  you were devoted to Betty, and heartbroken to
lose her. But....cats are infinitely rewarding, and I hope you would
be happy to have the company of a new cat friend and learn to love him
or her. It won't be the same, but I'm betting it would still be a good
experience rather than a sad one.  I'm sure Betty is cheering you on,
hoping you give another cat the love and security you gave her.
Francesca and Nina are on full purr patrol, hoping you take the
plunge!

But you are already constantly reminded she is gone.  So that shouldn't be
an issue.

I wasn't saying that you would.  Each kitty his its own personality and
we "mesh" with each one differently.  We don't love one any more or any
less than another - each relationship is in some way different. I was
just saying that Betty would want you to give another kitty the same
love and devotion you gave her in the short time you were together.

You, with the guidance of Betty's spirit, will know when the time is
right and when the kitty is right.

You aren't supposed to. Just like with us humans. We love each other
differently. Anywho, keep visiting at least. Like once a week. It's
healthy for you I think just to visit.

You have so much love to give to a kitty or two, Tak, there's no need
to worry you wouldn't love her/him/them enough. Any kitty would be
happy to have you as a slave.

And I didn't even post the pictures of the kittens! :)  Actually, I
was surprised that most of the cats at the shelter were adults, since
we're well into the start of the kitten season.  There were a lot of
recent ex-moms and adults on the floor, so that must mean that kittens
are being snapped up quickly, which is good.  I like spending time
with the mellow ones anyway. :)

I have nothing against kittens.  They are too cute tumbling little bundles
of fur.  But I don't think I'd have taken Persia in if she had been one of
those.

The vet guesses she was 2-3 years old.  She got into enough mischief without
being a rumble-tumble leap-on-your-head baby bitty!  Heck, she still does
the zoomie thing across me when I'm sleeping and she's 8-10 years old (more
or less, we don't know).  She has a built-in alarm clock for her 6AM
feeding... tap, tap, tap.  Tap me on the nose.  Nope, not yet.  10 minutes
later, tap on the chin.  NO!  10 minutes later, gentle nips on my arm, then
on my chin.  It's NOT TIME YET!  Now she's taken to pulling my hair through
her teeth at 5AM.  Persia, it's NOT TIME YET!  (laughing)  Of course I get
up then.  You would think I was starving her, which of course I'm not.

Oh, Takayuki, I think I see your name written on one of those
cages...  Maybe Betty is sending you a message?

I love every one of my cats differently but with the same intensity,
if that makes sense.  Also my kids (the ones I teach, which probably
by this time makes about 2000 or so.)

Purring,
Cantate and all her cats wherever they are!

That is the best idea yet -- take one of everything then you will really
learn to appreciate differences.    What is more important you will
probably love all of them.  Good luck.   MLB

There was one cat there named Shadow who was loudly suggesting that
everyone was his hoomin.  If the squeaky wheel gets the grease, he'll
find a home before long. :)
