Nothing seems to be happening, though he's been on a diet for a couple
of months now. I weigh his every portion of food. I'm not sure, though,
since I still haven't bought better scales.

Persia's been on a "diet" for a few years now. I use a measure the vet gave
me, not a scale. Doesn't matter. She's still fat. But although the vet
would like to see her weigh less it isn't compromising her health so he's
not worried about it. And she is a lot older than Caliban, so she's
sedentary.

Definitely a Porker of a Puss! A Chubby Cat. A Fluffy Feline. :)
You'll just have to face it, Marina, some cats have slower metabolisms than
others. Mind you, a nice rowdy kitten to chase him around could be just the
ticket - go on, you know you want to :D
Claudius is of the Miranda persuasion, extremely svelte. But extremely well
muscled so it's not a concern.
He sez. "just make sure you keep ol' fatso away from the chapter's stash,
Supurrvisor Miranda".

A nice ginger kitten might help "Fatus Catus" loose a little weight. Then
again it may just give him access to kitten food.

Not if you need to transport them 200 km every summer single-handedly
and without a car. :)

Use a "granny-cart", you know, the cart (sometimes with bag, but take it
away) that grannies transport their shopping with... or Finns transport
the beer cases from cruises to Tallinn...

When we moved into our new house in Newton, we met all of our adjoining
neighbors. The lady to the south of us has no cats, but has two small
dogs. After we had been in the house for a couple of weeks, she spoke with
me over the fence about the cats. One of her questions was whether "the
pretty brownish one is a special breed or something". The only "brownish"
cat we have is Amelia, the torty. Our neighbor was amused when my answer
was "No, she's just a regular housecat. She just happens to be rather fat."
I've got to figure out how to manage Amelia's diet without causing undue
hardship on the other 5.

LOL!

That's the main problem. Miranda is a nibbler. It takes her hours to
finish one serving of food. Caliban vacuums everything in sight in
seconds. He usually finishes his food while I am putting Miranda's in
her dish. I have to watch her eat, then quickly snatch away her dish
before Caliban gets to it and put it up on the fridge where he can't
reach it. If Mir hasn't finished her food when I have to leave for work
in the morning, I have to put her dish on top of the wardrobe, where she
can climb but not Caliban.

Sounds like he might need a little more exercise. Does he get to run
around on the island?

Yes, he will be free to run there. He does run around at home too,
though he's always sleeping in the pictures I post. he's also very good
at scaling the cat trees. He and Mir chase each other and wrestle. I
think he gets enough exercise, though this is a fairly small flat to run
around.
The problem on the island is that he goes around the other cabins there
and eats the other cats' dry food. I've stopped giving him any dry food
at all, and he loves dry food, so it will be hard to keep him from the
other cats' bowls. Especially since some of them just sit by and watch
him eat their food.

Now, why do these pictures look so familiar? They take me back 5 years
or so, when my little monster looked like a big round killer whale.
http://picasaweb.google.com/nnakova/BlogPics/photo#5066297614930254706
http://picasaweb.google.com/nnakova/BlogPics/photo#5066298087376657282
Don't get discouraged that he hasn't lost any weight yet. It took my
monster 3 or 4 years to lose the extra 1.74 kg he had gained as a
teenager. He didn't lose any weight at all while he was eating dry food.
But once I switched him to wet food only, he started to slooowly lose
the extra weight. He is now eating one 156-gram can of wet food per day,
split into 3 meals. I also add water to each meal, because it's the only
way to get him to drink any. The water has the added benefit that it
fills his tummy, so he thinks he's full (at least for a couple of hours
- then the begging starts again).

He's, erm, very healthy! I started to agree with you but Mistletoe,
with a similar build, unsheathed her claws to tell me that he's just
fi-i-ine!
