Purrs for The Prophet

Many of you may remember Jeff Mullen, who occasionally posts here. A series
of stories were posted about him a year or so ago, referring to him as The
Prophet of the First Church of Fritzianity; a title of friensdship, not
derision. Tonight Jeff is intensive care at a hospital near our home, and the
outlook is not good.

Of course the senior nurse wouldn't tell us jack, not even when I tried to
play the minister's card. (I am an ordained minister and the closest to
clergy Jeff has.)  A good nurse, this lady; she was doing what the state
requires and I won 't fault her, though she confirmed that cellulitis was
part of the problem. She was flabbergasted when Louie and I told her the rest
of the story: Jeff had been exhibiting signs of manic-depressive behavior for
months; not following a diet advised for type-2 diabetics; has a history of
chronic cellulitis that had gotten him admitted to hospital four times at
least; and as recently as last week called to apologize for wrongs done me in
the past, and saying he was thankful Louie had done something for me that
Jeff could not, that is to say gotten me treatment for my own volatile mental
illness. He had the air of a man who waas ready to commiut suicide, or die,
and was trying to make peace before his final trip.

We ran into his parents coming in as we were leaving the ICU, and learned
more about what was up: Jeff had collapsed at dinner with his folks last
Friday. He was to meet us to go singing, never showed up; and when I called
Saturday morning I got his father, who was taknig care of the cats. They told
us today the reuslts of the testings Jeff got: pneumonia that's filling up an
entire lung; cellulitis that had erupted into ulcerated sores over both legs;
and the cellulitis or accompanying infection has gotten into the bloodstream
and made him in effect systematically septic. Critical, but stable, they call
it; whatever that means. He'd been bitching about an ann oying cough for a
couile of months, attributing it to a min or bronchial bug or allergies.

Why in the name of all that is holy did I not call the ambulance Thursday
when I was talking to him?
My friend had a computer job for him, a routine fix. I called and he kept
fading, sounded like he was confused or stoned. He said it was the allergies,
nothing to worry about; allergies and an increased level of ozone that had
been bugging the area recently. But he lives out in the country and smog
wouldn't affect him so badly. And he said I was being a nag, an asspain, he
was okay, let him sleep, it would right itself in the morning. He could have
been having a little sugar trouble too, so we thought; that had been going on
more than usual in recent months. Like he was trying to eat himself to death.
He called early to make sure we were still going out after dinner with his
parents and did sound better. I just hope we weren't too late for him.

Please sent a few spare purrs toward my friend, The Prophet Jeff. And for
those cats who love him, that they know he always did his best for them. Jeff
is one of the few who stood by me wh8en I maried Louie, who didn't give a
danmn abouit race and culture. (Brandy is here putting her two cents in, and
for Jeff's sake I'll leve in those typois because she knows what she's doing.)

Blessed be,
Baha

Many purrs going out to Jeff. He sounds like a wonderful friend and cat
slave, and indeed, a great purrson.

We'll pray & purr he makes a full recovery from both the physical and the
mental diseases he is currently suffering.

Purrs for Jeff on the way.  This situation sounds so sad, and so hard to
deal with.  I've been there; my bipolar friend apologized on the
phone, and eventually committed suicide.  I'm glad you care so much
about your friend and are there for him.

May he recover swiftly and thoroughly from his ailments.

Purrs for The Prophet Jeff, and for you.

Please don't beat yourself up over not calling an ambulance.  The chances
are, he would have refused to go with them, and if he'd found out you were
the one who called, he'd have been angry with you.

Critical but stable generally means he's in pretty bad shape, but he isn't
getting any worse at the moment.

Hugs and purrs,
Joy

I'm so sorry this is happening.  Both for Jeff and his family and for you a
Louie

It does rather sound like he was sending out at least a few signals, or he
wouldn't have been at his parents at the critical time.  And don't beat
yourself up for not catching it and doing something sooner.  No one can be
expected to act on every hint.  None of us are given the wisdom to know when
someone really means what they say (I'm tired right now, don't bother me) or
when intervention is appropriate.

What matters is he is getting care now.

Many purrs for you all.  For strength and peace and for whatever comes.

Regrets to hear that Jeff is sick. Yeah, that Hippa new law in
NYS makes it impossible for folks to comment on cases. I've run
into the same thing when I go visit Kath, in the local nursing
home. She's been off the floor enough times that I can predict
where she will be, there are only a couple options.

As we have met a couple times in person, please mention that I'm
concerned about him. Buffalo is  a bit of a drive, but well worth
it to visit a friend in the hospital.

Millard Suburban is near the Maple Rd Stake center. If you want to come, do;
at his parents' request. He needs people to try and bring him back and his
parents think getting people he knows in there can help. I've even skip-
traced buddies of his, thanks to some of the tricks the collectors taught me.
Jeff is not well and at last report, not responding to the antibiotics.

Let us forget past problems. They are small in light of matters like these,
and I want to apologize before (God forbid) I get into a state like Jeff's.

I do remember driving by the hospital so many times on the way to
other things. I'm home for a few minutes, to grab some equipment,
during a repair call. Much as I try, I can't carry everything in
a panel van at all times. Some stuff gets left home. I'll do what
I can to get out to see The Prophet. Will have to call the
hospital, and see if he's well enough for visitors.

It's moments like this which remind me that life is only for a
short time, then we die. As to our recent communication, please
realize that I did not call you any names (unless you are
personally the person who invented the schtick about seniors
eating dog food). Please remember also that at least a couple
other people have been involved in this situation. You may wish
to contact them, also.

Please also be understanding if  I am very cautious and
standoffish with you for the next year or two. I usually don't
associate with people who go "over my head" and try to get me in
trouble from above.

I asked your forgiveness. As I review this thread during my lunch, I am
reminded of a quote of Marlene Dietrich, who said in effect that when there
is a request to forgive, don't dredge up the transgression afterward. There
are bigger things now than any he said-she said crapola, what was said or who
said it. No one knows where Jeff is going now. He isn't responding to his
treatment and he could end up dying in ICU. That is more important right now
than dog food and Rush Limbaugh quotes or any past crap, because that is what
it all is. Just so much crap. I cannot get myself into negativity. A patient
in Jeff's state can feel it and I won't do that to him; he's well enough for
visitors but unconscious, as he has been for a solid week. Don't let it fool
you. A person can hear and sense things in such a state. Because I will not
go to him and his family with any sense of negativity, please do not expect
any further response to anything which brings up past comments, postings or
anything else from the past unless there is something positive to it; nor any
political crap. My friend could die in there any moment and that is more
important than political or religious "isms" that, when one thinks about it,
don't mean jack sh.t. We can agree to disagree without all this.

Blessed be,
Baha

There are purrs and prayers and even a doggie sigh on you way from northern
California.  May you find that place of peace and quiet and light inside to
be present right now.  God has his plan.  Sometimes there are miracles,
sometimes mercy.  But may your own light continue to burn bright.

If a breeze threatens that light, remember that a breeze only makes the
light burn brighter.  Cup your heart around it to protect it and go on.

>  I cannot get myself into negativity.

And yet you appear to be doing so by responding to someone who a lot of us
have killfiled and whose posts we do not want to see.

If you are obsessed with responding to him in this public forum that is meant
for cat lovers to discuss cat things (other than elsewhere on a private
level) please don't continue to quote him in you replies.

I do NOT want to killfile you in order to avoid seeing his posts. I think you
are probably a lovely person, and I would like to continue to read you.

Tripped a memory. Kath has cellulitis of the lower legs. So, I
know a little about this. I also had another friend who had
bipolar, which was very much diet related. Hungry for him meant
ranting and raging.
