Tufty Ears--Maine Coon?

A friend of mine (who happened to be from Maine) remarked on Kumani
and Tyche's ear-tufts.  She said they must have some Maine Coon in
them since they have these distintive bunches of hair on the tops of
their ears.

I looked at Nocturne and Smokey's ears, which are very smooth all
around the edge, without those prominent clumps of long hair on top.

Kumani and Tyche were abandoned on top of a styrofoam slab at three
weeks old--we have no idea what their origins might be.

Do any other kinds of cats, other than Maine Coons, have the
ear-tufts?

(Colouration wise, Kumani is a brown tabby with flecks of orange in
her fur and two white-toed feet; Tyche is a white/orangetabby/brown
tabby mix, with white on her underbelly, feet/legs, and face, and
brown intermingled with orange striped spots on her back, upper face,
with mottled patches of brown and orange down her legs.)

Are you talking about lynx tips, the hair that comes to a point at the top of
the ears? It's a desirable trait in Maine Coons, but all MC's don't have them.
Some NOrwegian Forest Cats have lynx tips, too. I'm not sure what other breeds
do. The primary MC traits are their large frame, plumey tail, and uneven long
coat.

Yes, lynx tips!

Tyche and Kumani don't have plumey tails or long coats.  They're
pretty average size females, particularly next to Nox who is rather
large framed for a female.  They look like typical DSH's except for
the lynx tips, which don't seem all that common in the other DSH's I
know.  But I've seen fewer than a hundred cats really close--I figured
some folks here would know just how common lynx tips are in DSH's.

My favorite MC feature is the feet!  Mama mia, what toe tufts!  ;)

I love lynx tips. But you know, now that I think about it, I've never seen a
DHS with them. I bet they're darling.

Molly has tiny little tufts on her ears.  And she is just a little thing.
Seven pounds and supposedly 18 months old.

Rhonda, about 2.5 years old, weighs 6.3 pounds, but otherwise matches a
classic Maine Coon picture out of the breed book. Her coat is long but
silky -- that might not be classic.

She's very interactive with people, although not quite as much a cuddler
and lapfungus as Mr. Clark.

Rosie (RB) had tufty ears, I called her my little lynx. Snoopy, her
sister has tiny little tufts, hardly noticeable. Baggy has no tufts at
all.
