I was looking through some old pictures and found this one of Betty
on my lap on a cool day, all curled up with outstretchy paws:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/Takayuki9z/BettyBlanketLap.jpg

She was very much a lap cat, always looking for an opportunity to curl
up on top of me.  From this position, Betty would get a lot of
scritches, brushings, and kisses, and I would get a lot of murps,
purrs, upside-downy heads, paw touches, and milk-treadings.

The last time Betty was in my lap, and the last day that my home was
graced by a wonnerful kitty was exactly one year ago, on 2006-06-03.
Every day since then has been lonely without her, and I wish I could
have her back.  But somehow, my life still revolves around her.  I
wonder if that makes sense?

IMHO  Her spirit is still with you telling you there are other kitties who
need  your love and attention.  Have you considered adopting a waif?  MLB

I've briefly mused that if I happened to find a one year old cat that
looks and acts a lot like Betty... maybe it'll turn out to be her
reincarnation, sort of like the Dalai Lama.  But I think she's really
gone.

I also wondered if it's fair to a cat to have a slave in mourning.

Well, they won't respect it, but they won't mind either.

Been there, done that.

Yes, I believe it is. In my experience, they can sense the mourning and do
their best to help you overcome it. Cleo and Amelia, DD's survivors, both
were great helpers to Nancy and I in working through our loss of DD. When
we got Tabitha and Sammy a little later, they also picked up on our
emotional needs and helped us as well.

Everybody is different, but in my experience, having a new pair of
owners is the best way to soothe our grieving souls after losing a
beloved kitty.

There's no better cure for kitty mourning than the love of a kitty. As much
as you miss Betty in particular, the absence of feline ownership in and of
itself is a big part of the grief. And dealing with grief is sort of like
rolling a stone up a hill: You get tired of it when you push alone. With the
help of a cat, you can finally get it to the top of the hill instead of
having it keep rolling back down over top of you. The cat will understand
and bond the more tightly with you, if you let it. I speak from experience
(many times over).

Your home is overflowing with kitty love.

The pet of my heart was Willie, the black toy poodle we got in 1968.  I have
loved all the others who have shared our lives but she was and always will
be the one.  If I was home and sitting down, she was as close as she could
get to my on my left side.  I swear there are times I can still feel her
snuggling there.  She lived almost twenty years.  I've had four dogs since
and seven cats.  None of them ever lie next to me in that particular spot.

It makes sense.  Betty was an extra-extra-special kitty, and we didn't
know her as you did, but we still remember her with love.

Hugs and purrs on this sad anniversary. I don't know if it makes sense,
but then who am I to say, when I keep dreaming of Frank and Nikki. Betty
looks so sweet and happy and comfy in that picture.

Of course it makes sense! One day you'll know when the time is right to let
another owner into your life.

Or an owner will choose Tak.  I'd had my dog Sampson almost 18 years when it
was time to let him go.  I'd never wanted a dog.  And after he was gone I
certainly never expected to have a cat!  In fact, I said, "Nope, no way am I
going to have another pet to break my heart."  Then Persia showed up one
night and insisted she owned me.  And that was that :)
