UPDATE on "Pong"

He goes to TED on Tuesday am.  We have been letting him in the house for
periods when we are around to supervise, but twice now he has "let" himself
back on the front porch (closed of from the rest of the house by a screen
door that only has the hook & eye latch, we don't latch it when "Pong" is in
the house, only when he's on the front porch).  Once when Lizzie chased him
while he was exploring yesterday evening - and once today!

Now we know how he got away from his other humans.... been scanning the
papers for a 'lost Siamese' ad, but so far nothing.  And I'm not wasting my
money on a 'found' ad as nobody responds to them - or if they do, they are
so desperate to find their lost cat that they ignore your basic color
description (if you put that you found a black cat, they call you when they
lost a yellow tabby - sheesh).

Anyway, DH's co-worker's daughter is sooooooooooooooo excited about having
to have a cat when she gets her apartment, she's already shopping for toys &
whatnot!  She's picked out a name, but DH can't remember what it is, but he
said it's an oriental sounding name (probably from The King & I)

Our newspaper prints found adds free.  Great PR since so many are unwilling
to pay for them.

And you would be surprised at how different a cat can look especially if its
been our a while.

When our Sam was hit by a car in Alaska, friends of friends knew someone who
found an injured cat a ways from our home and took it to the vet.  Even
guarantees the vet bill if owners weren't found.  Said vet took the "stray"
in in the middle of the night and stayed up all night with it on life
support.  Two days later when various connections got made we called the
vet.  They said they had a grey female cat that had been hit by a car.
Fortunately we went to look anyway because of where the cat was found.  And
because we had no other leads.  It was Sam.  Our purebred lilac point male
Siamese (who had been recently altered)  He looked like hell and was in such
bad shape the vet only felt back there.  Didn't look.

Amazing cat lived another 17 years and pretty much raised my oldest
daughter.

And terrorized the neighborhood.  God, that cat had some lungs on him.

Great story! I'm so glad you decided to look anyway.

When Smudge was missing last year, I found her because one day about
a week after she'd gone missing, I was putting some stuff in the trunk
of my car when I heard some extremely loud cat yowling. It didn't sound
like Smudge at all, and I really didn't think it was her, but I decided
to look because (1) if some other cat was in trouble I wanted to help
it if I could, and (2) you never know. And the rest was history. I just
hadn't heard her meow that loudly before - she had never needed to before.

Granted, walking across the street is a whole lot easier than driving
across town to check out a "grey" cat that might possibly be yours. But
it's great that you did!

We had a cat that never meowed in his life (he ONLY did silent meows)
until he got stuck in the trunk of a car. He really could meow, but we
had never heard it in the 7 years or so up until that incident.

KFC has never meowed.  She can manage an almost inaudible "muh" and " ih"
However she could purr for Britain in the Kitty Olympics.

I never put a description of a found cat in an ad - no color, breed (if
applicable) or sex. If someone calls and claims they've lost a cat, I
ask for a description from them - if they match, then it's theirs.

Probably overkill, since as you say, you rarely get calls if you do put
a description. But with a purebred, I'd be more careful, since those
might be in more demand, or someone might think they'd have to pay a
lot of money for a meezer (not knowing that you can probably get one in
a shelter fairly easily), and think this is their chance for a freebie.

When Ping appeared, we never mentioned Siamese - only 'brown cat' - which
could mean many types: Ragdoll, Himalayan, Siamese, or even your
run-of-the-mill brown tabby!  We put the general location (nearest main
intersection) where 'found' and our phone # & "call w/descrip to claim".
One call from someone looking for a cat lost 2 miles from here, a tabby &
white w/ green eyes, and long haired at that.  Here's my 'found' ad on the
local Humane Association's web site:

http://www.monroehumane.org/lostfound/story.php?ID=468

Here's a lost Siamese ad on the same page:

But Ivy Tech is 5 miles from here (as the crow flies, longer via roads), and
looks more like a Smoke or Blue point Meezer.

I agree that doesn't look like Pong (or whatever his name will be).
