Fair Use Excerpt:

Menu Foods' massive recall of pet food will cost the company at least
$45 million, and that doesn't take into account the drop in future
sales or legal settlements not covered by insurance, the Ontario-based
company estimates.

The projected loss is in the Streetsville company's latest financial
statement, which showed the recall cost it a third of its sales and
all its profit in the first quarter.

The maker of dog and cat food said its Q1 profit last year turned into
a $17.5-million loss this year. Sales fell from $93.9 million last
year to $64.5 million.

"Menu, along with several other pet food manufacturers in the United
States, were the victims of a terrible fraud, and the [Menu Foods
Income] Fund's results for this quarter reflect the costs," the
company said in a statement.

Remember when Menu announced that it would pay vet bills to anyone
whose pet got sick from their food? I was talking to someone the
other day whose cat did get sick from it, costing her about $1000
in vet bills (which she can't afford - she had to make arrangements
with the vet to pay it off slowly).

So she called the 800 number that Menu had publicized, to try to
claim the money, and although she has called over and over and left
about 10 messages, they have never called her back. So far she
hasn't gotten a dime.

That was before they upped the number from 14-16 to almost 1500 pets killed
by it!  They are probably conferring with their lawyers to see if they can
retract that statement an not be legally bound to pay anything unless
there's a lawsuit (which I'm sure there is going to be, if not already).

Good point. And if approximately 1500 died, I wonder how many got sick
but survived?

There should be a class action suit!

But the company will just blame it all on the Chinese!
(Which may be true, but why did whatever is the Canadian
equivalent of our FDA not check the imported foodstuffs?)

I thought the tainted food were all manufactured in the U.S.,
while Menu is a Canadian company. So maybe the imported foodstuff just
went directly to the manufacturer in U.S.
But then I don't know how good Health Canada is in checking imported
food.

But the "taint" came from grain imported from China!

Hopefully better than the U.S. FDA, but don't count on it!

If  the grain from China was imported directly to Menu's manufacturing
plants in U.S., then Canada had no jurisdiction to inspect them, even
when Menu is a Canadian company.

No, I don't.

I wish the money would come out of the pockets of all the people who
made the decisions to cause the problem. That includes whoever decided
to add the toxic substance(s) to the gluten to make it appear to have
higher protein content, whoever decided to go the cheap route and buy
what turned out to be tainted ingredients, and anyone who understood
that something was drastically wrong but tried to sweep it under the
rug (causing more pets to sicken and/or die).

They're the ones who deserve to take the financial hit.

Instead, how much do you want to bet that the plant workers will end
up facing job cuts, and the execs will get their pockets lined with an
exit bonus and go on their merry way? &%*$#*^%$&
