Any help appreciated here with tips. I know the vet was worried about
fatty liver when she saw the liver, even though his bloodwork did not
show bad liver values. The tests indicated that from the intestinal
biopsy there were indications of mild idiopathic IBD with no evidence
of neoplasia. The fatty liver seems worse. They said there was
significant vacuolar degneration? (I got this from mom reading the
sheet over the phone). So, he is started on prednisone for the IBD
today. He is eating on his own there at the vets now, but he eats dry
and while mom has tried to transition him to wet, wants nothing to do
with it. SHe is prepared to syringe feed him if he stops eating but
obviously he wasn't eating enough or the fatty liver wouldn't have
progressed so much. He is probably around 12 lbs and has been so for a
long time. I would not call him a big cat, but the vet kept referring
to him as "big". He just doesn't look that fat to me. I sure wish they
were wet food eaters. You can tell so much better how much they are
eating and it would be better for both conditions. It's better by far
than lymphoma or something but tips on what to do for him within the
bounds of what my mom can do is appreciated.

I'm sorry I don't have any experience or advice, but we are sending lots
of purrs. At least they know what's going on now.

Karen, the only experience I have with HL is when Yoda got it so bad
in
2000. He got down to 60% liver function before he started turning
around. The
vet put him in Nutrical supplements in addition to what we could get
down
him with a syringe, and also large doses of B vitamins, which are
supposed to
help the liver. The liver does regenerate itself.
He is only at the vets because of the quarantine, right? That is so
wrong. He would
improve so much better at home.
Hope he keeps improving.

Yeah, he is only there because of that. He seems happy and perky
though. I don't think he is unduly stressed at least. Thanks for the
info! I'll keep you posted.

Yankee got HL some years back, and I just thought "oh good, he's losing
weight!" [sigh!]
The vet put a tube in his stomach, and every four hours for a week I
pushed a little cat food down the tube, as he wouldn't eat at all.
Then I could sleep for a full night, but every four hours during the
day... and so on.
He's fine now, but it was a close thing.

Yeah, I am REALLY happy he is eating on his own. I don't know if mom
could deal with a feeding tube.

Here are two groups on Yahoo that you might be interested in joining:

My Harmony(RB) fought off a nasty bout with HL when she was about 7
years old. The problem was that she was eating, but she wasn't eating
ENOUGH because she disliked the particular cat food I was using. So I
didn't realize that something was actually wrong until she actually
LOOKED sick. And as anyone with a cat knows, they conceal their
symptoms when they can... so that by the time a cat lets itself appear
sick, it's generally been ill for a while. :o(
In any case, we did successfully come through the hepatic lipidosis
scare thanks to tube feeding. But what an ordeal it was to come that
close to losing her. It's good news that Tycho is interested in eating
on his own; I think that will help matters a lot. Keep us posted.
Good luck! BTW, how many more days does Tycho have on his quarantine?

I think he should get out Monday. Poor guy. Though he is getting quite
a bit of attention I think :D

Soncek got some prescription Hills wet food (it was written on the can
that it is to prevent hepatic lipidosis) for a little while to get him
to start eating after the operation, but soon after that he had to start
eating Hills k/d.
We are sending lots and lots of purrs and best wishes for Tycho's
complete recovery,

He is still being suplimented with the Hills a/d. But he also eats his
own food a bit. Just not enough for the vets satisfaction. She is
hoping he gets to eating better now that he is home. Petrus is VERY
happy. Tycho and he have never been apart like that. I was worried he
would be growly or something but nope. Brudda is home! I am really
hoping things go well. I know mom will do her best.

Oh, how nice that he is back home! And how nice that Petrus was OK with
the TED smell. We will keep purring for Tycho and your mother.

I'm glad he's back home with his family. Petrus is a good friend!
