Do cats ever fall for the "fake throw"? I used to think that was such
a mean trick
to play on a d*g. :-)

The Stripey Thing does. After a bit of playing (20-30 minutes), I get
tired and just want to read my book. I throw the pompom and don't let
go. He jumps high in the air for it and then goes to look for it.
Unfortunately, that usually isn't the end of it and he just finds
another one to bring back to me to keep playing.

The Little Monster (Kotyo) is crazy about fetching, too. You would think
that after 6 years he would be more into snoozing and less into running,
but no. Every night it's the same thing: he finds one of his balls or
mousies, brings it to me and drops it at my feet. Then he sits there,
staring at me and mmmrrrppp-ing until I pick up the ball/mousie and
start throwing it.
His favourite game is for me to throw the ball up to the top of his cat
tree. There is a platform with raised sides at the top, sort of like a
box. Once he sees the ball falling into the box, he will slooowly creep
up the cat tree, stealthily climbing from platform to platform, until he
reaches the one right below the top. Then he very carefully raises his
head until he's peering into the top platform, keeping his ears folded
back the whole time, so that they don't stick up above the top of the
box and alert the ball to his presence. Finally, when he has lulled the
ball into a false sense of security, he POUNCES up and into the top
platform, grabs the unsuspecting ball, jumps off the cat tree and
triumphantly runs back to me, dropping the ball at my feet and waiting
for me to throw it again.
One of these days I have got to get this on video. It's the funniest
thing... especially the crazed look in his eyes while he's creeping up
the tree...

LOL You *absolutely* have to get this on video! It's a must-do thing. No
doubt about it!

I will try. Unfortunately he gets distracted when the video camera comes
out, so usually all I get is footage of his nose sniffing the camera.
True, it's a very pretty pink nose, but I'd prefer to have video of
other parts of him as well - his tail, or maybe an ear or two... I guess
I'll just have to keep trying...

Thanks! I think he's the cutest, of course, but then I might be *just* a
little bit biased :-)

I would LOVE to see this! I saw from your other post that he gets
distracted by the camera. Hmm... maybe you need to just spend some
time videotaping him (or pretending to) until he's bored with the
camera. *Then* play "throw the ball up to the platform"?

I think I'll just start carrying the camera with me everywhere. Sooner
or later I'll get him... Once I do, I promise to post the video online
for you guys to see.

It is so cute how many cats play fetch I had necer seen it before but
since Bell does it I noticed on youtube that so many other cats do it
as well. I think they do a better job than the dogs. Mine is
seriously into it. Very focused.
