I swear to God if she has anything happen to her health becuase of this I WILL freaking sue their a.ses off. God WHY does this have to happen?????? She gets SO upset that he has to be there in the first place. I can't believe this. I really can't :(
Mischief - 27 May 2007 21:11 GMT OMG!!! I'm so sorry!!!!
Is the cat an outdoor cat? has he been vaccinated for rabies?
When Bessie the bitey bitty chomped on my finger, she had to be quarantined for 10 days too. But that was because the cat was found outdoors and had no vaccine history.
I'm so sorry for your mother. I don't know if that is the state's policy regarding cat bites, but the vet is probably trying to cover their bases. But it's still not fair to your mother.
I'm so sorry that this had to happen. Major purrs that your mother will make it through this.

Karen - 27 May 2007 22:51 GMT > OMG!!! I'm so sorry!!!! > > Is the cat an outdoor cat? has he been vaccinated for rabies? Totally indoor (although he got out for a bit the other day. First time since she took him in). He apparently should have had a booster shot in May of 05. Why no one mentioned this on any of his visits since that time (and there have been several) is a mystery.

Apparently it is animal control that sets this quarantine there. It also apparently fluctuates with who is at the moment in control at A.C. some have allowed in home quarantines. However, Tycho has spiked a fever today so he wouldn't have come home right now. I really really hope this does not indicate another problem. :(
> I'm so sorry that this had to happen. Major purrs that your mother > will make it through this. > > Kristi I just hope Tycho makes it through this. I'm so afraid now that it will come back lymphoma :( Although, it seems like that would be more likely if he hadn't had a history of trouble. He's had to have enemas occasionally for some time now. He also vomits quite a bit for some time now. I guess it's just a wait and see thing.
EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque) - 28 May 2007 00:40 GMT >> OMG!!! I'm so sorry!!!! >> [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > May of 05. Why no one mentioned this on any of his visits since that > time (and there have been several) is a mystery. When my cats became indoor only, in California, my vet told me the rabies shot wasn't necessary! Of course, when I moved out of state, I had to get them, and update all the others, in order to have health certificates for them. (Apparently this is a law for all states in the U.S., when moving from one to another, but I never knew about it and many states just don't bother - at least not when the move is by auto, not public transportation.)
Gabey8 - 27 May 2007 21:33 GMT Quarantine? Is that the vet clinic's rule, or some kind of state/local rule?
How many days has he been hospitalized? Can't that count against his quarantine, as he obviously won't have been exposed to rabies during that time?
Sorry to hear of this setback. Purrs and prayers are ongoing.

That is totally absolutely ridiculous. Had the vet tech been doing his job right, he may not have gotten bitten in the first place. But that's moot--the point IS, Tych bit because he was afraid, plain and simple. He does not have rabies, and they know it. I know this makes me sound paranoid, but you *know* that techs get bitten, probably often. Do they quarantine every single animal that bites out of fear? If so, how much are they *charging* for quarantine? (Here, it's well over $100). You go, girlfriend. You make an ugly scene they won't forget if something happens to that baby.

I just wish that places would have *separate* wings for cats and dogs. It only makes sense. You know when you are building a vet place so why don't they just design it in? (I know more do now, but still, it isn't like this should be a NEW idea).
She is upset because she can't visit tomorrow. She went twice today. I only hope they really follow through and get him a bigger kennel. I mostly hope that he gets better. He is not yet eating on his own, though he drank some water on his own today. Mostly, I just hope he gets better and doesn't have cancer and NOTHING else happens.
Mischief - 28 May 2007 03:08 GMT > OMG!!! Karen! That is totally absolutely ridiculous. Had the vet tech > been doing his > job right, he may not have gotten bitten in the first place. Uh, my two cents in defense of the vet tech.....
Yes most bites can be avoided, but there's also the small few where there literally is NO warning and the cat just suddenly lashes out and next thing you know, you get dinged by teeth.
That happened with my coworker, who was doing his job right by restraining the cat. We were going nice and quiet and slow when suddenly the cat flipped out and before the tech could let go he got bit.
With cats you never know and sometimes even if you do everything right, it ends up being bad luck that you get hit with teeth.
Just my two cents as a vet tech

Pat - 28 May 2007 03:49 GMT I got bit once, by a neighbor's vicious mean tomcat that was threatening to tear into my Whitefoot (RB). They were about 15-20' apart and I got between the two of them and was telling Whitefoot to go home and the other cat to back off, when suddenly that cat flew into the air and wrapped himself around my forearm, digging teeth and claws into me all at once. Bit right down to the bone. It was THE most painful injury ever... The neighbor at my insistence kept the cat in a cage for two weeks. When they let him out, he left and never came back. I was not sorry about that!
Karen - 28 May 2007 04:20 GMT >> OMG!!! Karen! That is totally absolutely ridiculous. Had the vet tech >> been doing his [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > Kristi I don't blame the vet tech. I just wish there had not been a damned dog in the hall. Tycho is so docile I'm sure they never thought it would happen. But he's never been barked at by a great bloody dog! They are calling it "a trigger". Well, I guess! It's just upsetting. Mom called after visiting him again today and she was crying and said she was so tired. She went to the store afterwards and had trouble breathing. I'm just very concerned all this stress is going to literally do her in :(

When my son's dog bit their youngest child, he was quarantined for 10 days -- at home. Best wishes for your Mom. MLB

How ridiculous is that? He was scared by a dog - and now he has to go into quarantine? Lots of purrs heading over for you all, especially your mom.

Your poor mom. I hope she can find a way to relax, since she obviously can't control this situation.
Purrs, Joyce
Enfilade - 28 May 2007 14:07 GMT If we had a ten day quarantine for every time Nox and Tyche bit someone, the vet would have had to put up with 10 days of Tyche doing her damdest to bite everyone who fed/watered/cleaned her (and Nox would be in quarantine for the rest of her life). The one time she landed a good one on our vet, he was quite happy to send her home for the year until her next checkup.
Rabies shots are not given to indoor cats in this province unless it is believed that they will come in contact with bats, coons, or other attic-dwelling creatures. Since even mice are never found in our complex, we have not given them rabies shots.
(Tyche was so bad when we kenneled her at the vets that she was in a cage under a sheet and not let out, to avoid her attacking people and/ or harming herself in the attempt to get out. Everyone is now kenneled in a non-veterinary facility, because it seems the vet-smell really scares Kumani and when Kumani gets scared, her sister gets hyper aggressive. Tyche still knows lots of inventive names to call the kennel staff, but she doesn't go out of her way to attack them when they are in her kennel.)
I hope Tycho gets out of quarantine soon. Poor guy.
