Wellness brand cat food?

Well, after all my talk about making my cats' food, I decided to
table that project for now. There's a lot to learn about nutrition -
a cat's needs, and the nutritional content of whatever meat I'd
be serving them - so that I'd know how much to make up in supplements.
I'm busy and a bit overextended, and I don't feel I have the time or
energy to really do it justice. I sure don't want to do it wrong and
make my kitties sick.

So, I returned all the unopened bottles of supplements to the health
food store. That was a bit sad, I had really looked forward to cooking
for my kitties. On the other hand, the refund I got was a minor
windfall. :)

Then I headed off to PetFood Express, a chain store that sells high-
end premium brands of pet foods, and I bought four 13-oz (approx 368g)
cans of Wellness brand grain-free cat food, and a smallish bag of
grain-free dry kibble. Cost? $25 and change. <grumble grumble... they'd
better like it... grumble>

Well they loved it! This stuff redefines the meaning of "gooshyfood".
It's much more gooshy than the stuff I've been feeding them, I assume
because it's not full of carbs and fillers and other junk. Also, one
can fed all 3 cats for 2 days (I feed them twice a day). So that's not
really too expensive after all. And they seem to like the kibble, too.

Anyone else here feed their cats Wellness brand? Is it as good as it's
cracked up to be? Any problems to watch out for?

My cats love Wellness, too.  I don't know of any problems with it except
that it is made by Menu Foods and some people won't buy anything made at
Menu since the recall.

'Scuse me while I scream:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't realize that. This is why I wanted to cook for them...

At least it doesn't contain any grains, so therefore, no tainted
grains.

I have avoided all canned foods with grains and gluten, and that came long
before the recent problems with contamination.  Cats simply don't need that
stuff.

I have used Wellness for four years, and both of my cats are thriving on it.
I rotate three different varieties (usually Chicken, Turkey, and Chicken &
Herring), and I often add Innova EVO as a fourth variety.  Each cat gets 1/3
of a 5.5 oz. can twice a day.  That doesn't sound like much, but they have
maintained stable weight on that volume.

all of mine loved it, but the vet had me stop when Tiger got a blockage and
crystals and an infection, the PH was way off for his senior status, but on
the good side, everyone got more energy, there was less shedding, and lots
more and playing,*not sure if that last one was really good or not*  Lee

Did Tiger get the blockage because there's more protein in it, do you
think? I get concerned about Licky.

the vet said that if it was the food that caused it was that he was
sensitive the PH balance, I can't remember if it was too high or low now.
She also said that it was a cat to cat thing so didn't apply to all cats
equally.  if I went back to it I would have him checked regularly and the
stress of taking him for the test is more pain than I want to put him
through, he hates the carrier and he is none too thrilled to be in the car
so I switched them all to CD dry and it hasn't occurred in over 2 years so I
guess we will stay with this for now.  Lee

I have used Wellness canned for a long time.  The cats like it and seem
to be healthy.  The cans are processed by Menu but Wellness supplies all
the ingredients.

Ah, that is *good* to know. Because it's the ingredients that I worry
about!

Urinary blockages are usually from too much magnesium (if the crystals
that caused the blockage are struvites) and/or urine pH. Rusty was on
IAM Ocean Fish when he was
first blocked over 10 years ago. His urine pH was around 7.
He reblocked after being on dry prescription CD for over a year. Since
then he only eats  canned prescription food on the advice of the vet.
I add water to his canned food to make sure he gets enough fluid.

Rusty had many episodes of blockages and urine crystals. At one point
even the vet got very frustrated.  I lost tracks of how many trips to
the emergency vet clinic. I didn't
think Rusty would make it to his 10th purrsday.  But God willing,  he
is going to be 13 next month.

that is why I am sure it was his reaction to the food, he has never had
another, Lee

Yes, I bought them Wellness. Grrrr. They wouldn't eat it. I've heard
nothing but
praise though, from everyone I know who feeds it. That's why I bought
it.

Same here. Bought some for the furkids, and not a one of them would
touch it. Not even Amelia, the hoover-cat.

It took awhile for Holly and Duffy to become "acclimated" to it.  They were
both used to dry food (Holly had been free-fed, and Duffy had eaten whatever
the shelter supplied for several months).  After I began to learn about the
advantages of premium canned food at scheduled times, I started the process
of  "adjusting" them.  They definitely wre not happy at first, and I felt
guilty because they simply were not eating.  However, now they eat
exclusively a canned food diet (mostly Wellness plus some Innova EVO).  Now
they love it, they know when meal time has arrived, and they are thriving.

We've been feeding Mistletoe Wellness brand dry food on the vet's
recommendation.  He could have pushed his house brands but was very
considerate of the travel involved to his office (30 miles), and
suggested Wellness as an alternative that was available from much closer
pet stores.  Oh, well, he won't miss out on much revenue since we really
like the care he's give our furbabies and go back to him for everything
medical.

Missy really likes it and hasn't exhibited any digestive problems from
it.  Haven't tried the moist varieties since she's a "dry only, please"
kind of girl.

She's always waiting at her dish at mealtimes, so I guess she approves.

Glad they liked it! Our fuzzbutts turned their noses up at it because
it was TOO gooshy :P Their favourite food is Science Diet, but they'll
eat the Dick van Patten's Natural Balance gooshyfood so that's what
they get!
