I have 2 12-year old cats and I just gotta say how much they have
grown into my life:

Casey wakes me up for work with pawing at my face if I don't get up by
clock alarm.  He has a self-alarm and it doesn't matter if it is a
weekend or not.

Bobby and Casey get the zoomies around 5:30 - 7am while I am getting
dressed for work.  Casey sometimes climbs into the shower with me and
gets soaking wet.  Bobby cries for head rubs.  I pet both before
leaving for the day and I get meows and assuring leg rubs before I
leave the house.  I tell them to be good boys and have a great day.

I come home at 4 or 5pm and both boys are waiting for me at the door
no matter what time, they know.  They sit by the door with wide eyes
waiting for me to feed them.  They greet me with meows and want fed --
right away.  If I have something else to do, they get upset and lead
me to the closet where the food is kept.

After dinner, they both join me on the sofas for TV time.  I brush
both long-hairs at 7pm and they know the time and take turns on the
sofa to be brushed---every day.  They have a built-in clock for this
and it is funny how they take turns getting brushed.  If one goes
before the other, he will get a front paw swat from the other to show
disfavor.

Come around 10pm, and they know it is bedtime and take their place on
the bed while I prepare coffee for the next morning and brush my
teeth..  Casey goes to the spare pillow on my bed and Bobby lays on
the side for belly rubs before drifting off.

That is our day and has been for over 12 years.

Great post! This is adorable.

Yes, when you have cats who have lived with you for a long time, there
are many rituals that become part of daily life. I have several with my
cats, although they vary over time. We tend to have "fads" at chez
Joyce - some activity will be very popular for a while, and then it'll
fall by the wayside in favor of a new fad.

Right now, the big thing is, when I come home, Smudge waits near my
apartment building, and runs up to the car mrrrping and meowing. If I
take too long gathering my stuff together to get out of the car, she
jumps on the hood and meows at me through the windshield. Once I get
out, she runs to the sidewalk and presents herself for petting, rolling
and squirming around.

Roxy needs several petting sessions after I come in. She runs up to me
4 or 5 times as I go about the house, pulling down shades and turning
on lights, putting away groceries and changing my clothes. At some point
she'll just flop down on the area rug in the living room (the "petting
area") and do the "fetching" pose: on her side, head turned up coyly,
front paws curled under in a parody of kitty cuteness.

Licky runs around mewing at me. He can't decide whether he's dying to
be petted, or is frightened of the big human clumping around in shoes
(I usually take them off while changing into my "loungewear" and I don't
wear them much around the house). Eventually he finds a location where
he feels safe enough to let me touch him, and revs up his loud purr motor.

I love the greeting I get from the gang when I get home!

There are also many bedtime rituals, but this post is long enough.

Too sweet!  I just love how our cats "learn" our ways and adjust.
They do seem to have internal clocks and love routine.

Congratulations on having two great friends.   Purrs that the closeness
will continue for many, many years -- in good health.   MLB

What a lovely story.  Thanks for posting!

My two are 11 years old and we have our special routines too.  It's pretty
great to have their total trust and affection.

I think of them as kids but then I realize how incredible it is to
have 2 cats act like they do.  I'm sure you all have the same
experiences.   I am so happy they are in good health at this age and I
hope they live for another 12 years.

I've personally known 4 cats that have lived beyond 24 years so hopefuly
you're in with a very good chance. The oldest cat ever lived to 37.

My two are 4 and we have our special rituals as well. In fact, one of
them is going on even as I type this,

When I switch my PC on, Dunzi will come out from wherever she is and
demand a serious full on skritchie session, complete with loud purrs,
head rubs and if I am a little slow off the mark she puts her teeth
around my hand as if to say she can bite and will if I don't get on
with the skritchies

Sarsi has never done it (She's zonked out on Dave's PC) it's as if
when they were kittens they negotiated some sort of deal "You get
skritchies from Meowmie when she's on her computer and I get to be the
one who climbs onto the bed and purrs at them last thing at night"

Is 12 old? I hope not, as I have a cat who is 11 years.

Your cats sound adorable.

Older cats certainly become part of your life, Snoopy is 17 now and it's
hard to imagine life without her.
