Most of you know Persia came to me front declawed. She hates having her
front paws touched and I don't blame her.
We have a little routine where I lie on my side on the sofa when I'm
watching TV or reading and she snuggles close in front of me. Sometimes she
crosses her pretty paws as I stroke her head, and we do the blinky-eyes
thing at each other and I tell her how much I love her. She usually finds a
way to touch me with the tip of the paw that is crossed over the top, just a
bit.
Tonight we were in this position but I had my hand knuckles down on the
couch in front of her, fingers loosely curled. I felt her reach out with
her paw and touch my hand. I didn't move my hand, just looked at her,
blinked and told her how pretty she is. Next thing I knew she had slipped
her paw into my curled fingers and left it there! I was so stoked! She let
me "hold" her paw! And *she* initiated it! We did the blinky-eyes thing
some more and I kept talking to her. She left her paw there for a good 10
minutes before she moved it and tucked it under her chest. WOW!

Persia's a Very Special Kitty, as you both know. I feel sorry for her
former human(s), if she was lost, but they surely couldn't have hoped
for a better home for her!

True, their loss was definitely Jill's gain.

It's Persia's gain too. Certainly if they were the ones who had her
front paws declawed. Almost certainly, in any case.

Unfortunately, in the USA a great many, perhaps most people, simply
don't know how badly declawing a cat affects it for the rest of it's
life. I believe most people who have cats declawed believe that *only*
the claw is removed.
We all know different.
I worked for a vet, and had to leave over the declawing; I refused to
suture up the poor kitty's paws, after a few days. And I couldn't watch
it, or be in the same room, after awhile. Despite the anesthetic, EVERY
SINGLE CAT that I saw being declawed made a horrible noise as each digit
was ripped off.
It's more horrible than I hope you can ever imagine.

I think it would be horrible even if it *were* just the claw. Cats
need their claws!

You mean... they weren't put under anesthesia???

I hope she was lost, not abandoned. But I got the impression she was simply
left behind. I had notices out and called all the shelters and vets within
10 miles yet no one claimed her. But Persia claimed *me*. And I'm so happy
she did!
Last night was a sort of crowning glory. She's let me rub her belly since
about 6 months after she came here. Heck, the first night she was here she
climbed up into bed next to me and purred next to my pillow. Admittedly, it
was a distressed purr; she wasn't sure about her choice but she did climb up
next to me. Within a few days she knew she'd made the right choice :) By
then I was a sucker for this sweet girl. What else could I do? LOL

You're absolutely right. Of all the moments with my little dog Sampson (RB)
I remember most looking out the sliding glass doors at my mom's house and he
was standing on his hind legs sniffing one of her roses! It is indelibly
etched in my mind. As will be this memory of Persia placing her paw in my
hand :)

I'm curious, Jill. My Cendrillon had been declawed before I
got her, too, but she still "kneads" like any other cat (on
my neck or leg, if she's sitting on me). She also "spars"
with Melisande in mock battle, even though Melly has claws
and Cendri doesn't. Are you saying Persia doesn't knead, or
just that she resists having you touch her paws? Cendrillon
tends to back away if I approach her (although she's
perfectly comfortable when it is she who initiates the
contact) and doesn't care to be picked up, but she's very
much a lap cat, so long as it's HER idea. (And as with all
cats, a kneading session usually preceeds her settling down
for a long stay.)

She kneads and she also bats at me if I have a toy or something in my hand
or sometimes acts like she's boxing with me. But she has always resisted
having me touch her front paws at all. She pulls them away the moment I
touch them.

Persia has always been a lap cat. The first night she arrived here, total
stranger, she was up next to me on the pillow. She was purring, albeit
distressedly (sort of a ragged sound). But it seems she was used to being
around humans at bedtime; she simply wasn't used to me. That changed fast
enough!
She doesn't mind being picked up although it's no her favourite thing in the
world and she seems to associate it with being put in a carrier. She abhors
having her front paws touched. I merely associated that with the declawing,
although it may have nothing to do with it at all. At any rate, it was a
very sweet and loving 10 minutes!

Concatulations! I love when Five does this too. She's also a front declaw -
we did not do that, she was already that way at the shelter - and she
doesn't appear to be oversensitive in her front paws based on her behavior.
It's a nice sign that they trust us when they do that "paw holding". Enjoy!

That is Wonderful, Jill. I have the same situation with my Wolfie (he
came to me declawed; was still limping when I got him). When I first
got him, I gently massaged his poor paws, and the let me. Now he's
touchy about them :-( Oh, well, maybe Persia can send him a message and
tell him she decided she likes her pawsies being touchedl P-)
