Vino won't jump

He doesn't jump anymore at all.  I have noticed that his jumping has
tapered off over the last 2 years or so.  Even back in Thailand I would
sometimes see him miss a jump and then he would not try that same jump
again for months and months.
I think he might be more prone to missing jumps because he doesn't have
a tail and so he can be a bit klutzy.
Now he doesn't even bother trying anymore.  He can't get up on the
bathroom counter even though he wants to so badly.  He just paces around
and stands up on his back legs to see the top, but if he can't see it,
he won't jump.  He only even gets up on our pretty high bed because
there is a wide ledge all the way around it at the half way point.  And
he paces around for a while before working up his nerve.
It's definitely not physical though.  He can run and leap and he scraps
with Dennis like a kitten.  I honestly think he has a mental block
against jumping.  The other day I put him up on the kitchen counter and
from there he made his way onto the wine rack (no jumping required) and
from there he jumped onto our Chinese cupboard!  This is the same
distance as jumping from the floor to the bathroom counter would be.
But since he's rarely even been on the wine rack, he probably has never
missed this jump before and therefore wasn't too scared to try it.
What a weird little bugger he is.  But it makes me sad to see him turn
into a bottom dweller :-(

You should consider a check up. Often this is an indication of
arthritis. Mixing some cosequin in his food could help immensely if
this is starting.

He has had a check up.  Like I said, he runs and leaps and scraps.  He
just won't jump up on things.  He shows no indication that it's
physical.  I think he's psyched himself out from missing jumps in the
past.  Like I mentioned, he can make the jumps when it's to a spot that
he has never jumped before and missed.  I guess I'll have to see how he
goes in the new house where it's all new and he doesn't have any bad
memories of missing.

Cali has trouble jumping too, about 3' is her limit now. She's been taking
Glucosamine for about a year and it has really helped. Although you're
right, her confidence is a bit shot. Her checkup did not show any issues,
but she did get visibly tender at times.

This is the same thing that has happened to TuTu.  She no longer jumps to
the bathroom counter where her Petsmate fountain is.  I now fill a large
pan  with water and leave it on the shower floor and also one in the tub.
She is now 10 years old and too heavy but she seems well and happy.  Best
wishes to Vino.   MLB

He might just be slowing down a bit with age. Mandy, who used to be
extremely agile and a brave (if sometimes clumsy) jumper now, at 17,
rarely jumps further than from the floor to the bed, or from one piece of
funiture to an adjacent one.

Hi Britta--Nice to see you!
Do you know that just the other day I realized Yoda has turned into a
bottom dweller,
and that makes me sad, too. It kind of makes me worry though. I know
he is an
old man now, maybe a little arthritic. His hips have a funny, real
subtle sway after
he jumps down from the couch. I was gonna ask the vet about hip
problems
when we go today. Vino is lots younger than the Yo-Man though. But I
sympathize.

It *is* sad, isn't it?  I'm sure you are right, that the lack of a tail
prevents him balancing properly and maybe when he was younger he could
compensate for it.
KFC (with tail) can still jump as high as she wants to even at her very
advanced age.
Maybe you could make him some ramps.

Well this is the other thing.  He refuses to use ramps.  He is
absolutely terrified of them!  When he was in the quarantine, he
enclosure was very high with at least 3 or 4 different levels and ramps
going along the wall to get to them.  Vino would not use them and if I
lifted him onto a ramp, he would spread out all his legs and struggle to
get away.
When I just had him in the kennel while I was in Canada, there was also
a ramp to a 2nd level in his enclosure.  This ramp was about a foot wide
and carpeted.  I thought this ramp looked so much better than the narrow
metal ramps in the quarantine place.  I put Vino on it and he freaked
and jumped off.  I told the kennel lady about his issue and she said she
would keep an eye on him to see if he would use the ramp.  When I got
back I asked her and she said he never once used the ramp and she put a
chair in so he could get up to the level with the cat bed.

How about some steps then? He's probably afraid of falling off the
ramp, poor baby!

Yes, they make pet steps in all sorts of heights.  Of course, you and Dennis
could probably put something together and you could cover the steps with
carpet remnants for next to nothing.

You might try stacking some boxes for him. That might be enough.
Purrs and good luck.

Yes, well sure we could do all that for him.  But the fact remains that
he is a cat and as such, is only really interested in getting to places
where he can't normally get to.  So he would probably use the boxes or
steps or whatever for a while, then never again.  And I mean it's not
like it's imperative that he can get up on the bathroom or kitchen
counter.  Many people would be happy if their cats stayed off of there!
I just think it's sad that he's lost so much of his jumping confidence
:-(

It is sad. Purrs that he'll get a fresh outlook in the new house!

Vino is still a good and cute little kitty.  Vino sounds a bit like
this cat. :)

But I hope he's not this loud:

I thought it would have that effect. :)  This kitty knows how to
project!

ROFL!!!  That is so funny!  Yeah, Vino is actually quite a bit like that
cat except Vino has no problems jumping down from anything.  It's just
up that he has a problem with.

OMG, that is one seriously loud cat!  Is that one of Flippy's cats?

It is a little confusing, but in this case, it's the cat's name that's
Flippy!

Love the Van Halen song with that. :)

(That is, it's a perfect use of that song. I like the song OK.)

Yikes! If I didn't see the cat on video, looking fine if rather
perturbed, I'd think it was in serious pain.

Exactly!  DH came running from the other room, wondering which cat I'd
stepped on!

OTOH, Weebs was strolling past when the cat first screamed, and he stopped
dead in his tracks with a WTF?!?!? look on his face.  Poor kitty sounded so
distressed, I stopped it after about 3 screams, and Weebs had forgotten
where he was strolling to!
