I'm sleeping. The phone rings. I roll over to the other side of the king
size soft-side waveless waterbed to answer the phone. I'm talking to my
long-lost when suddenly I realize I'm getting wet. And it's not the cat,
and it sure isn't me. My bed has sprung a leak!
Okay, I jinxed myself because I told a friend of mine tonight I was probably
going to get a regular king mattress in the spring. So of course, tonight
it decides to show me who is boss. Do I have a patch kit? Hell no! And
IIRC from when I moved in, my drain-n-fill attachment thing is about beyond
hope.
I strip the bed, unzip the cover, pat the area with a towel and try to find
the leak, figuring I can use duct tape or something like that temporarily.
No such luck finding the leak. So I zip the cover back up and start to pull
the fitted sheet back on.
Here comes Persia. She DIVES under it. Whee!! This is fun! (She never
saw mommy unzip the mattress cover before, and even though it's not unzipped
anymore it must be some new kind of game!) Of course I start giggling and
calling her goofy.
She jumps out from under the sheet and lands right in the wet spot. HA!
But it didn't phase her. Well, it phased me!
Now I have to find a new mattress, *tomorrow*. This one is 13 years old and
about due to be replaced anyway. But of course this happens when I'm out of
work and the rent is due tomorrow. And I can't think of a single place in
my area that sells king-size waveless single-piece waterbed bladders
anymore.
I did some searches online and the waveless bladders still seem to be
cheaper than regular king mattresses (I don't need a "set"; the frame and
box springs are perfectly good).
But guess what I'll be doing tomorrow? You got it... mattress hunting. And
if I find one, have to negotate its delivery pronto. I still have to find
then I have to find a drain kit that isn't falling to pieces and drain my
existing water mattress before I can put in the new whatever. Luckily I
have sliding doors into the bedroom so getting a big mattress inside isn't a
problem. (sigh)

I feel for you, Jill! I had a Soma waterbed, made up of seven tubes
that were filled with water. It was very comfortable, and a couple of
times when a tube sprang a leak, there was no big deal in getting a
replacement. However, several months ago, I turned over in bed and, for
some reason, put my hand on the side of the mattress. It was soggy!
When I took off the top cover, I saw that two of the tubes were nearly
empty, and there was water sloshing around in the cavity where they fit.
I had noticed a little sag in that area of the bed, but I thought the
tubes needed topping off, and didn't have anybody around to handle that
chore.
I ended up getting a non-waterbed. Some friends of mine came over and
hauled out the soggy mess, and I spent a few nights in the guest room.
Incidentally, I was really lucky, because I have an electric mattress
pad, which I had been using. The insulation on all the wiring must have
been really good, or I'd have been fried.
Good luck in finding a mattress quickly and inexpensively.

For now, I've settled on a rush order patch kit (assuming I can find the
leak, which appears to be very small given the amount of water and that I
couldn't spot it but then it was late, I was tired and didn't look terribly
hard). Also a new fill/drain pump in case I do have to drain the darn
thing.
I think I'm ready for a regular mattress for a number of reasons, but I
simply cannot afford to buy one right now. And I'll be darned if I ask to
borrow money from anyone.

What *other* animal can be so lovely and graceful, and still so GOOFY?
;)

This goes to show you something, but I don't know what. ;)

<sigh> This is always when the unpredictable happens. you look at
your bank balance, and you sigh "OK for another month"-- then
something happens completely out of left field. :P

Persia will think it's an adventure.
Got any new pitchers of your pretty girl?

Isn't that the truth?! She had fun for a bit and I needed the laugh!

Apparently she's not as freaked about water as she pretends to be.

Of course! I decided to rush order a patch kit and see if I can fix the

I wound up saying "to heck with it" and just made the waterbed back up. I
don't sleep on the side where the leak is and it appears to be a small, slow
leak.

No new pictures. I'll try to take some in the next couple of days. She's
in her kitty walk right now but it's gloomy outside so wouldn't make for any
decent pics.
