HRFLTiger - 11 May 2007 22:51 GMT
Hi guys,

I've just spoken to Pam Shirk as of 22:30 GMT, and she seems in good
spirits. She has been downgraded into the Stepdown unit (whatever that
is) which suggests that they are getting things under control. She's
got no idea how long it will take to get her better.

She's asked me to pass on the following...

Her address for cards etc (and please send LOTS!) is

Pam Shirk
Stepdown Unit, 2East (Room 3)
Womack Army Medical Centre
Fort Bragg
N. Carolina
28314

The best number to get her on is 910 9077430 and ask to be put
through.

Yowie, Myself and one or two others have freaked out the staff because
all these women with weird and wonderful accents keep ringing her
up...

Basically, she has "some weird flesh eating bacteria" (I suspect it's
necrotizing fasciitis) that was so severe that when she went into the
hospital she was already in septic shock. Apparently she wouldn't have
lasted another 12 hours. Quite literally. They've got it all under
control, and apparently part of the treatment is "laminating her a.s"!
What this means is that they've cleaned out all the muck and vacuumed
plastic onto the wound so the bacteria can't grow on the healthy
tissue.

Whilst she was joking about no-one having the cats yet, I got the
felling that it was FAR more serious than she was letting on. She
asked me to tell you Tak, that should anything happen, you WILL be
getting Sonya, Tanada and Huey and that you have no choice as you need
a cat or 3. ;0) Having said that, she hopes to make a good recovery
and she hates the hospital food!

Please DO NOT send flowers as she is very allergic to pollen and gets
hay fever, but cards are VERY welcome!

I'll be calling her again next week.

I talked to her later after Helen did, everything Helen says is as Pam
presented to me, her spirits are very good and she is doing exceedingly well
in the attitude department, although I think the lamination process is a bit
disconcerting, everybody send a card, lets really freak them out, Lee, who
had a very nice talk,

I bet they're wondering what Pam is famous for, because *they've* never
heard of her :-) We could of course be entirely evil and figure out some
giant joke to play.

OK, so why would a regular woman like Pam be known to women (and a few
blokes) all around the world?... It would have to be legal, but *weird*. :-)

(I'm voting international pet psychic, its close enough to be *almost* true)

I'm sending as card and I do not know her, but we have cats and this
group in common - sometimes that's enough!
Purrs and prayers for her...
Stormmee - 12 May 2007 09:45 GMT
well she does already know tac needs more cats so that really qualifies, Lee

Well, when I was so life-threateningly ill in 05 and you all sent so many
cards/flowers to the hospital I found it much more fun to be secretive.  The
nurses were all agog to know why I was getting cards from all over the
world.  I merely said  "you don't know who I am, do you?"<smirk> and I never
offered an explanation.  I got better pain relief after that.

Sorry today I'm having senior moments

Having a few too many of those of late- bit of a worry still as long

Thanks for the update, Helen.  It's good to know she's in good spirits and
they've gotten on top of the problem.

Purrs and prayers for a full and rapid recovery are still coming.

Thanks for the update, Helen.  I can't believe all that the poor woman
is having to deal with!  She must be incredibly strong inside.  Sending
purrs (very loud ones) from me and The Nine.

Thanks for the update. Continuing to send lots of haling purrs. I know Tak
needs a cat or three but I hope Pam has to put up with hers for many more
years.

I think a Stepdown unit  sounds like the ward between intensive care
and going to the ordinary wards. Over here it's sometimes called a
"high dependency unit"

Then again in the UK a stepdown unit is halfway between home and
hospital like Thames House where Dave was for 3 months.

I'll get a card organised asap and in the meantime I have the Furballs
on full purring mode for her to get well soon. In fact as Dunzi is
sittting next to me while I am typing this, I'll just prime her purr
engine with some skritchies

Hmm..maybe I don't need to send a card, Pam can probably hear that
purr motor from there!
