Exactly CN, don't keep us in suspense - we're dying for some good news after
all your work traumas!

Enquiring minds need to know, and so do we :)

Yes, finally!!

I think I may have mentioned that Sovereign Oil closed down.  That was the
job where they "counseled" me to wear skirts no higher than mid-calf and no
hint of cleavage - and where I couldn't send birthday greetings to other
workers since it was the mis-use of company equipment - and last but not
least I was made to work til 8 or 9 at night quite often and had a 2+ hour
commute.  Needless to say I had mixed feelings about losing this job.  I
took a temp job that paid $10,000 less than what I was making and, like most
temp positions, had no medical  benefits (or time off or anything else).

Well, I found that I really, really liked working here.  It is a very large,
international HR firm.  They have the whole 30th floor in a *very* plush
downtown high-rise that connects, by enclosed walkways, to the nicest
shopping and restaurants in Houston (it's right next to Minute Maid park).
The amenities here are *SO* nice.  They provide any type of soda and a huge
variety of gourmet coffees for free, as well as "cup o'soups" and other
snacks (and cater their meetings using gourmet chefs - ohmygawd am I going
to gain weight here ;>).  And I *LOVE* the relaxed but professional
atmosphere and demeanor of the people who work here.  There are plenty of
people here who have been with the company for 20+ years, so there is
definitely job security (and after all that time *they* still love working
here) - the company has been in business since 1886!.

So... I applied for the position permanently and *I GOT IT* <happy dancing>.
I'm still taking that $10,000 hit in salary, but the benefits are absolutely
fantastic (as is logical since this is an HR firm).  I get fully paid
medical, dental, and vision insurance with a company-paid deductible; death
and dismemberment insurance; life insurance; disability insurance;
retirement plan; company-matched 401K plan; 25 days of PTO the first year
and increasing yearly; a yearly raise and bonus; and even though I'm on
straight salary, I get paid time and a half for any overtime I work.  All
the benefits take effect the day I officially start (this Monday) - I don't
have to be vested!!!

I've worked here as a temp now for 5 weeks, so I know all the people here
and they are all so nice!  This is the first time I've taken a job knowing
exactly what I was getting into and loving every aspect of it (OK, the
salary could be better).

And the icing on the cake - it's a *20 MINUTE COMMUTE WITH NO TRAFFIC*!!!!!
[I actually just got a speeding ticket on the way home day before
yesterday - can you imagine being able to speed in 5 O'clock traffic in
Houston??!????!!]  That sealed the deal.  DH and I talked it over and
decided we could tighten our belts a little bit more.  Being free from
stress and being happy and excited to get up and go to work in the morning
is well worth having to cut our budget and buy generic instead of name
brands!

Thank you, Victor, for your concern, and *WHEN* are you and Tom going to get
your butts back this way again?!!!  ;>

Hugs,

I'm so *happy* that you finally found your "dream job" and wish you the best
of luck in it!!!

As for trimming the budget - DH & I found that we are saving money big time
by paying off the car!  It hurt us big time when we did it, but in the long
run it is well worth it!

That sounds excellent, CN!  As you well know, good benefits are well
worth the $10K cut
in pay.  Sounds like you'll be back to normal in no time, anyway.

Isn't it wonderful working a job you enjoy, and losing that awful commute?

I'd say wear and tear on you and your car and gas for your car was costing
you a good $100 a week.  So that makes it less than a $5000 hit.

Plus I've always found that jobs you enjoy end up paying pretty well, simply
because you are able to do your best work.

Yep - I worked really hard to get this job and I'm going to work really hard
to keep it.  From what I've heard, the firm rewards good performance.

I'm just thinking here.  Didn't you start the job as a temp?  As thru an
agency?  If so they get a commission either from you or from the employer
based on what you earn over a certain period of time.

It used to be pretty common to keep initial pay down as much as possible
just to keep the commission down.  Raises after the contract period is up.

Or so you can always hope.

Spinning off on the commission comment.... I'm not trying to put a damper on
anything here.  I'm happy for Lori, really!!!  But I got a job in 1992
through an agency; it wasn't a "temp agency" nor did they do
contract-to-hire positions.  The contract stated if I left the employer,
voluntarily or otherwise, before 12 months from my date of hire I had to pay
the commission to the agency.  It was something like $1000.

My boss was a tyrant.  He was former Army guy who thought it was acceptable
to shout at people in the hallways for real or imagined transgressions.  My
co-workers were jerks (big time into gossip and starting rumours where none
were founded).  I managed to stick it out just past the 12 month mark but
believe me, I was job hunting big time during the couple of months prior.  I
just couldn't deal with the atmosphere.

I landed a job at my (now) previous employer right after the 12 month
pay-the-commission deadline and said "Bye!!!"  I was there for 11 years.
Sadly, after a big corporate takeover and many, many management and staff
changes and department restructures later, I no longer work there.  But by
the that time I didn't enjoy going to work anymore.  To think at one time it
was a really great place to work. (sigh)

Purrs for Lori to continue to love this job!

I worked for an agency very briefly a few years ago and if the employee
stayed 6 months, the employer gave the agency a commission on 10% of their
first years salary (If they only stayed 3 it was 5%) and it was fairly common
knowledge that quite a few of the companies who asked us to find employees,
would pay less for that 6 months and then grant a big pay rise ("You've
passed your probation") to avoid paying more comission than they had to

So hang on their CatNipped, there might be a nice surprise after a while on
the pay front!

CN,

I'm thrilled for you!

You'll probably save a lot of that drop in pay by having insurance benefits
and lower commuting costs, and most important, fewer stress related health
problems and more time at home to cuddle the kitties..

I'll bet they give you a raise, too, after you have been a permanent
employee for a while.

Happy dancing & kitty vibrations for you here in dampest Cornwall :)

I think the benefits & lack of commute balance the lower pay pretty well
really as you might get to enjoy your life some now & get some quality time

>Whoa... that's a lot of vacation, isn't it?

Don't get too enthusiastic.  PTO seems to be one of the latest buzzwords to
hose you out of vacation.  At $WEMAKECELLPHONES PTO was instituted a couple
of years back to lump together vacation days, personal days and sick-days
into one "pool" of paid time off.  If you use too much of it for vacation,
then you don't have as much sick leave if you need it for colds/flu/take
Fluffy to TED/etc - share your germs with the rest of the staff - or "staph"
as the case may be!  After being "outhousesourced" a few years back I'm now
with a company where I only get 2 weeks vacation, after several years of 4
weeks vacation separate from the sick leave pool.

It's not just vacation, it's "Paid Time Off" - which means sick days,
personal days and vacation.

No, we still live in Spring.  I work only 2 blocks from Crawford.  If you
take Crawford (which is the street that runs alongside the stadium) it runs
right into/becomes Elysian (which has a huge overpass that bypasses a bunch
of stoplights, and the stoplights you do run into are timed to make Elysian
the main, fastest, thoroughfare).  Elysian runs right into Hardy Toll Road -
you can bypass 59, 45, and 610!!!!  Once you get on Hardy Toll Road it's
85MPH+ all the way home.

Yeah, the did the same to us a couple of years ago... we get more PTO,
but we have to use that if we get sick. :-/

> Yeah, the did the same to us a couple of years ago... we get more PTO,
> but we have to use that if we get sick. :-/

Going to go to work Monday and get down and kiss my bosses feet....

I get 27 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays and in another year or so
I get 29 days annual leave

If I go sick it doesn't affect my annual leave- there are all sorts of
rules about if you take too many days off or take more than 7 days
without a doctor's note then things can get nasty but the occasional
day off because of a cold doesn't count

There are also allowances like compassionate leave, which is not one
anyone wants to claim but you get up to 6 days (managers discretion
that one through, a colleague of a friend of mine wasn't allowed 1 day
to go to her grandmothers funeral on the grounds the manager felt a
grandparent wasn't "a  close enough relation") on pay

And also at manager's discretion "Carer's leave" up to 3 days a year
paid (after that they have to let you have the time off but unless you
take it annual leave they don't have to pay for it) When Dave was
coming out of hospital I took the day off for the home visit, the day
off to get the adaptations sorted out and the day he came home all
without affecting my leave allowance...

Maybe I shouldn't moan about how dull my job is...I'd chuck all of the
above in for something that required me to think more than once a day
and for more than 5 minutes! My job has occasional moments of
sustained effort and thought but they are few and far between and I am
after 7 months thinking about getting something else. I have tried to
explain to my manager that I don't have enough to do but I want to do
something more than just audio typing. Initially my manager had a good
idea that I could do some stuff for the management team and there was
some talk of me doing some project management (and being trained to do
it) but in the end, I got loaded with more audio typing..I now have a
new line manager and she seems okay and I would kinda like to talk to
her about the matter but she'll probably just land me with more audio
typing so I am just telling her that the new consultant I took on, is
taking a lot of time (He isn't that much) and quite often spending a
large part of my day
exchanging emails with an equally bored colleague and checking web
sites- at this rate I'll be reading the Wikipedia from beginning to
end!!!

I mean last week Monday was a bank holiday and I was busy on
Friday....Tuesday to Thursday? If you totalled all I did it was a days
work- in my last job whilst the bulk of my job was supposed to be the
dreaded audio typing (I'm not that good at it and have been waiting
for someone to find out what a fraud I am but after having conned my
first med sec job in 2003 worked in it since and passed my
professional diploma with 99%- I keep having these nightmares where I
realise I am actually a med sec!) but a willing smile and the ability
to volunteer for anything that looked interesting (or even was just a
day out of the office some of those turned out to be interesting as
well) kept things varied

Go believe me CatNipped your job sounds a lot better than what I am
stuck with and I don't know where to go next (I checked on a career I
always thought I'd like to do and found they don't take people after
30 generally unless they have a relevant background and I don't)

Oh well something always turns up

Lesley
