Has anyone ordered from PetFoodsDirect.com?

I was just thinking of ordering and was wondering how the shipping and
quality is.  Is the food fresh (based on the manufacturing date on the
package).  Is it shipped in a manner so that the food (especially the dry
food in the paper bags) is protected from sunlight and the other elements?

I have ordered all of my pet food from PetFoodDirect for a number of
years -- originally dry food but now exclusively canned food.  Everything is
extremely well packaged, and I have never had any damage.  Some people have
said that their shipping is too slow.  I have never had any complaints about
that, but I do stock up well in advance and therefore don't notice the
precise time as much as some might.  I have never had it take more than two
weeks for delivery, though, and it is usually less than that.  If this is
your first time, be sure to call them for your original order and ask if
they have any discounts available.  After that, have them add you e-mail to
their mailing list and then watch for their e-mail discounts.  They have
frequent discounts of 13% or 15%, but the best ones (less frequent) are 22%
and a *rare* discount of 25%.  That more than covers the cost of shipping.
You need to keep a close eye on your e-mail because each discount has a very
limited timeframe and is usually good for only two or three days.

Yes, the shipping was slow.

They are GREAT. Right now you can get 20% off. I do not order dry, and
you should consider getting your cat off dry. Expect a week before they
ship.

Shipping is very slow, so just be sure you order in plenty of time so
that you don't run out. You can actually set a time schedule with
them, and they'll automatically ship according to your needs if you
like.

The last time I ordered, UPS left my package at the wrong house. The
people there didn't bother to call me -- it sat there at least a week
before I tracked the package. The time before that, UPS left it in the
driveway in the middle of an absolute monsoon, and it was a soaked
mess. Then it was only a partial order, and I never did get the rest
of the order. I finally asked them to just give me a credit and forget
it.  Their products are great, customer service tries to be helpful,
and it's no problem getting someone on the phone. But between UPS and
the 1/2 order that nobody could figure out where it even was, I just
gave up on them.

Shipping rates are very high. Unless money is no object, you almost
have to wait until their 20% sale, which is pretty often, and that
helps offset shipping. I only ordered cat food that was not available
at Petsmart. If you're ordering something like Fancy Feast or Pro
Plan, it's not worth the hassle and shipping costs.

But yes, the food is very fresh, and packaged well.

Um, I think this depends where you are. Aren't you in Oklahoma or
somewhere like that? PFD is in Pennsylvania. Shipping is cheap to
NC and VA, and the coupons make the purchase of FF less than or
equal to what I pay at local stores.

If I ordered 1 case of FF, their regular price is $14.99 + $9.99
shipping. That's over $25, and
I can get it at Petsmart for $10.16 a case + sales tax.
They're great for hard-to-find brands, but it just doesn't work for me
price-wise. It's crazy to spend
$25 for a case of food I can buy for half that price here. I suppose
the shipping charges level
out if you buy in bulk, but I don't like to do that because of lack of
space to store it, and cats
who are just as likely to say "Oh. Didn't we tell you? We don't like
that kind anymore." as soon as
I buy 2 cases of it.
The convenience of having it delivered to the door would be super, but
then there's the idiot UPS driver
who pretty much canceled that out.

Yes, Sherry, because you live very far away from Pennsylvania, which
is where PFD is.

It is a lot cheaper for those of us who live closer.

That's all I was saying.

It doesn't make any sense at all to buy *anything* online if you can buy it
locally at a better price.  Fancy Feast is available almost everywhere, and
you obviously can get a better price from a seller close to you.  By
contrast, I buy Wellness and Innova EVO from PetFoodDirect, and they are
*not* readily available in some regions.  I would have to drive almost 75
miles (each way) to buy them, so shipping from PetFoodDirect becomes a lot
cheaper.  Moreover, part of the problem you keep citing is actually a
problem with UPS, not PetFoodDirect (which I assume could be a problem with
anything you buy from any online seller if they ship by UPS).  It sounds
like you should file a complaint with UPS.

Yes, Wellness is one of the foods I ordered. That was back last summer
when Boots
got seriously thin, to the point the vet was about to prescribe her
small doses of /Valium
to boost her appetite. I was looking for anything she might eat.
You can find *anything* there! If it sounded good, I ordered a small
amount of it to try it. Get this:
Back in Booty's younger days she was quite the rabbit hunter.
Petfooddirect even carries a brand
("Natural" something or other) that is made with rabbit meat. Sounds
distasteful, but we were
desperate to get her to eating.
Of course, those days of indiscriminately ordering anything that
sounds good are gone. I'd be afraid
to do that now.
I did complain to UPS. I got the "substutue driver" excuse both
times. :-(

Is there a specific reason you're purchasing the Innova EVO brand?
I just read that it doesn't contain any grains.

It seems like Innova with their Evo and California Natural brands have some
nice products for cats with skin allergies.

Why doesn't Purina, who prides itself on formulas and variety, manufacture
more food that's "natural" in content for cats with allergies?

Purina Pro Plan has a "sensitive skin and stomach" formula and when you
read the ingredients, one could conclude that not many cats with sensitive
skin should eat it.

Considering that they're very careful with their production and ingredients
since Nestle's took over, that they own the major petfood cannery along
with probably the largest dry food manufacturing plant, and haven't been
affected by the recalls, an excellent natural line shouldn't be too much to
ask.

I'm not too familiar with allergies, as I've never had to deal with
it, so I'm not sure
what exactly constitutes a "allergy" food. What ingredients are left
off, or added,
to meet this criteria?
Pro Plan *does* have a new "natural" line called "Pro Plan Select".
You might check
it out and see what you think. I noticed that one of the claims is,
there is no corn
in it. IIRC it did contain wheat, though. Does that affect allergies?
There aren't any added colors or artificial flavors. I'm usually not
suckered in by
those stupid claims that food contains blueberries, or sweet potatoes,
or
leafy greens, whatever. But this one the cats really seem to like.
You make a good point though. Purina is a major player in the cat food
industry, and
they *should* expand their line to include alternatives to the other
brands that *do*
specialize.

I have been using several varieties of Wellness ever since I adopted Duffy,
and I added Innova EVO when PetFoodDirect began to carry it.  I adopted
Duffy three years ago, so I made these choices long before the current
crisis began.  I did deliberately choose products with no grain -- not
because of contamination (no problem back then, as far as I know) but
because grains are not needed by cats and may be contraindicated.  I had
previously free-fed Holly with dry cat food but moved exclusively to a
canned diet for both cats at that same time.  All of this evolved as I
learned that a canned diet is much healthier for cats and began to realize
that the old theory that dry food is somehow better for a cat's teeth simply
isn't true.  Cats don't even chew as people do -- they "crunch."  Even with
people, would we really eat pretzels in order to clean our teeth??  There is
a much lower incidence of diseases such as diabetes and UTI in cats that
receive good quality canned diets.  Wellness and Innova EVO are
premium-quality cat food, and both of my cats have been thriving.  It has
been well worth it to me to buy quality food.  Interestingly, it doesn't
cost as much more as I expected because this food is "dense," and my cats
simply don't need nearly as much of it to maintain their weight.  Each cat
receives 1/3 of a 5.5 oz. can twice a day.  That looks and sounds too small,
but it has been "just right" to maintain stable weight.  They are both
active and beautiful cats.  Holly weighs 9 pounds, and Duffy weighs a little
more than 8 pounds.  (Duffy looks larger than Holly in some of their
pictures, but that is because of his longer, fluffy fur.  He is actually
rather small for a male cat.  He was much too thin when I first adopted him,
so I did use regular Innova -- which is higher in calories -- until he
reached his ideal weight.)

Yes, I have ordered from them. I ordered a case of canned food. It arrived
well packaged with bubble wrap to ensure the cans weren't dented. I was
satisfied and just placed another order. If you order from them, be sure to
go to the coupon page first to get the best coupon you can. The first time,
I used a 22% off coupon (shared by someone else on this newsgroup, but now
expired). The second time, I used GEICO (20% off).

I order food for my lovebird Peaches from this place.  It's less expensive
than buying it from the vet or a pet shop and the food is high quality.
Shipping is inexpensive and everything is packed well.  I recommend them,
for what it's worth.

I made a small order using the 22% coupon just to try them out. It took them
eight days to ship after the order was placed, even though on the site they
claimed they ship quickly. Packaging was ok. They use UPS and I think their
shipping rates are quite a bit higher than they need to be for the weight.
I'll only order from them in future when they offer discounts and I'm not in
a rush.

Where are you? Close to PA? Or far away? I am in NC and their shipping is
very reasonable. Free with coupons.

Thanks for all your responses.  I just found the food I was looking
(California Natural Chicken & Rice)  at a local retailer, as the little
thing was meowing for her dry food and I was all out.   She eats Fancy
Feast canned, but likes a change of pace now and then.

I paid several dollars more for the 4 lb. bag, but the shipping and
handling charge from Petfooddirect would have made up for it. Now I know
that I have to search around for the coupons and order about a week in
advance.
