Purrs for Boone

If you can spare a few purrs, prayers, or tail wags today for a dog that
loves cats, we would all appreciate it.  Our Lab, Boone, fell ill over
the weekend and got worse yesterday.  We thought at first it was a flare
up of his irritable bowel syndrome and put him on the meds we have on
hand for that.  He got much worse over night.  He basically has water
instead of stool, has stopped eating, and looks miserable. Steve took
him to the vet's this morning for blood work, x-rays, etc.  The vet said
that there was a slightly dark area towards the front part of his
abdomen (in the x-rays) that the vet didn't know what it was.  He also
said that Boone seemed like he had right leg pain when he extended that
leg and had lost muscle mass on his left side.  The blood work will not
be back until tomorrow.  We're giving him a higher dose of antibiotics
but actually had to pill him this morning.  Never in 9 years, no matter
how sick he has been, has he refused to eat a little peanut butter and
his pills.  We will know better how to proceed when the blood work comes
back.

Needless to say I am worried.

Spare purrs heading Boone's way. I hope it's something treatable.

Lots of purrs coming over for Boone and his family. You must all be so
worried. We're hoping for something easily treatable to show up in the
bloodwork.

Mega purrs are on the way from the furkids, and the d*g furkid is
sending slurpy kisses and tail wags from one lab to another that Boone

Just had a thought  (I used to be known as quite a dog expert, judge etc)
See if you can get Boone to drink the water that rice has been cooked in,
it's full of starch and should firm him up a bit.  If you haven't go any -
and of course you won't have - cook some and freeze the rice for future use.
Do *not* give him milk.
Do not try to make him eat either, rest his stomach and try to encourage him
to drink the rice water.  He may not be very keen at first, but he will be
losing a lot of fluid and eventually he'll want it.  Take his other water
bowl up so he has no choice.

Hi Julie,

No real news yet.  We did find out that it isn't any parasite or
bacterial infection but haven't heard anything on the blood work yet.

The poor boy is still sick.  He isn't having BMs any more but the vet
tech we spoke to today said that was probably because he hasn't eaten
anything in quite a while.  He is supposed to start on a rice and
cottage cheese diet today but he just basically licked the cottage
cheese a little and then walked away.  That was scary because cottage
cheese is one of his favorite foods.  I guess he'll eat when he is ready.

Thanks for the purrs and headbutts.  I hope to be giving an update soon
with the lab results.

Good news!  Boone's labs all came back as completely normal so no
cancer, pancreatitis, or anything like that.

Also, I was having a few pretzels and this big black nose worked its was
over to the bag and tried to steal one.  Then he looked at me with those
soulful eyes that seemed to be saying "Can I have a bite??"  I have
never been so happy to have a dog beg for food in my life.  I didn't
give him a pretzel but did give him some rice and cottage cheese.  He
was tentative at first but ate very enthusiastically.  He even licked
the rice he spilled off the floor.

He just suddenly seems to be better.  He looks better and acts happy
again.  The power of Purrs!!

This still doesn't tell us exactly what was wrong but the vet suspects
food intolerance.  We're switching to a new prescription diet that uses
"Hydrolyzed chicken livers" which means that the intact proteins are
already broken down so the body does not have a negative reaction to
them.  We knew that he was allergic to many animal proteins but he was
doing so well on his prescription egg and rice diet that this caught us
by surprise.  If this stuff doesn't help I guess Meowmie will be happily
cooking rice and cottage cheese for him for the rest of his life!

Thanks to all of you!

Mike, you don't know how right you are!  Before we were adopted by
Oliver we always joked that Boone was our cat.  He has this way of
stretching and arching his back and extending his paws/claws that is
very cat like.  We always joked that somehow he was a cat born in a
dog's body.  :-)

Thanks!

"I" was the culprit that once caused my brother's akita's food allergy
to flair up. I was visiting for a few days, and gave him some bacon,
not knowing he was allergic to certain foods and on a special diet.
Poor guy was pulling out his fur and ended up having to get a shot

You might try him with eggs too.  At first scrambled quite soft in with his
rice.  Then poached - they so love to lick the yolk, then hardboiled and
chopped and if he tolerates this, bowel wise, try him with steamed white
fish. Then a gradual return to his proper diet.  Yay, Boone.  Go for it,
boy!

Hi Tweed,

Thanks for the suggestion and the earlier boiled rice water suggestion.
It may be that eggs were the problem in the first place!  He has food
allergies and is allergic to most proteins (beef, chicken, fish  We even
had him on venison) and finally we had him on an egg and rice dog food
that seemed to agree with him.  The vet now thinks he has developed an
allergy to the protein in eggs as well after 2 years!  His new food will
be potato and chicken liver based.  Apparently they (the dog food
people) now have the ability to break the protein in the chicken liver
down so that the body doesn't recognize it as an allergen but he will
still get nutritional value from it.  I don't understand how that works
but I'm willing to try it.

How about lamb?  A lot of allergic dogs here are put on lamb and rice that
we can buy and feed ourself.  Lamb is quite expensive here but when I still
had my dogs I could buy a lamb/rice kibble without additives and
preservatives.  It wasn't cheap.
It seems like it's difficult to be allergic to lamb.   In humans it's used
as an exclusion diet (eat lamb and rice, gradually introduce other things
and if you show symptoms, it's the new foods you're allergic to.)

Lamb too!  In fact we had him on a lamb and rice diet for his normal
food from the time he was a puppy.  We found out out pretty early he was
allergic to beet pulp which is added as a fiber source to a lot of food.
So we had him on a food that only had lamb and rice for ingredients
and about 6 years and he was fine.  Then he got very sick and we
couldn't pinpoint what it was.  I finally looked at the food and found
that the manufacturer had added beet pulp with no notice on the bag.
This seemed to set off some sort of hyper allergic reaction but we
noticed when he was just on rice and cottage cheese and egg he was fine
but whenever he was on a food that had lamb, beef, pork, fish he would
get really sick again.  I think the only two we didn't try was rabbit
and duck!  If this doesn't work he'll have to try one of those.

Thanks!

Purrs that he does well with the new diet. I mentioned my brother's
d*g, and how I once set off his allergies during a visit when I fed
him some table scraps (before I learned about his restricted diet).
Sounds like Boone allergies mirrors what my brother's aikita went
through - doing fine on a diet for awhile, then develping an allergy
and having to switch to something new.

Thanks Steve.  This seems to be EXACTLY what is happening to him.  Do
you know what they ended up feeding him?

No, sorry I don't remember. He went to the RB about the time I retired
from the Army ('93) at about 10 years old, IIRC. I'm not sure what the
average age for akita's is, but do remember that he seemed to have a
good quality of life. Though, he did have to be pilled morning and
night to prevent outbreaks.

The worst thing about him, is that he never learned to get along with
other dogs, which seems to be a too common trait of akitas. My brother
had him professionally trained, and he was fine when someone was
around. But if left alone and another animal happened to get close, he
would go after it. The breed was originally developed to hunt bears,
later for fighting, and still later as guard/police work, so it was
dangerous to leave him where he could interact with other dogs without
supervision.

Poor Booney.  Purrs for his (and your) ordeal to be behind him.
