Does Rita need a kitten?

Jane - 30 Apr 2007 13:34 GMT Rita's lonely. I'm sure of it now. She wants me to play with her on the new cat tree. Oh, there are times when she's okay sleeping, but she doesn't even like to eat unless I'm there with her. I kept finding her teddy bear and stuffed kitten and all of her mousies in her kibble bowl, but now that I've moved it out to the dining room, that doesn't happen. I thought she was trying to feed them, but now I'm sure she was just bringing them in for company. *sigh* I don't really want a 2nd cat. I'm allergic. Not badly, but I'm sure a 2nd cat would make it worse. But she's lonely! She hated the 6-month kitten (Stormy) that walked in the door, so I thought if maybe I could find a little 8-week kitten, she'd accept that. Do you think it would work? I'd have to find a rescue group (there are plenty of them here) that would let me give the kitten back if it doesn't work out. I just have to see if a baby of her own would make her happier.

Princess surely would eventually accept a baby even if at first she hissed at it. Just be sure to introduce the baby correctly. Have someone else bring it into the house, in a carrier, and leave the carrier alone while Rita checks it out. If there is no hisspitting, the baby can come right out; otherwise you will need to go through a procedure... Lots of info out there.
No kitty should be lonely. Try to find an Aby or some other breed with very short hair and you won't have much of a reaction, if any.

Melisande seems a lot more laid back since I adopted Cendrillon. I knew she missed Patches (RB), but really hadn't wanted to get a second cat when my future living arrangements were so up-in-the-air. About the allergies: you might consider a rex or similar breed - some breeds are apparently more "hypoallergenic" than others. (I suppose a Sphinx - being hairless - would be ideal, but they are rather expensive, and cats so highly bred can tend to be rather delicate, too.)

Oh, there are times when she's okay sleeping, but [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > Jane > - owned and operated by Princess Rita Jane, she was probably "nesting" when she was putting her toys in one place. Think about getting a dog for her to play with. Another cat would be a challenge to her territory, and be more trauma if she looses her rights. A dog, on the other hand, can occupy the same territory and not be a threat, and would be company for her to play with.

If you live where they are legal - California does not allow them as pets, so I had never seen one until I moved to Arizona, and encountered some for sale at PetSmart. I can certainly see their charm, but two cats are all I can manage, right now.

But it might be just the ticket for Princess Rita! (I'd love to have a ferret here, to give these cats some exercise!)

I would be tempted to get one, too - if they're half as soft and cuddly as they look. Too bad circumstances won't permit.

I've never understood the ban on ferrets as pets in certain places. They are harmless creatures and oh so curious and fun to watch! When John and I are on the road for his art shows, free entertainment comes in the form of visiting PetCo or PetSmart and looking at the critters. The ferrets are the most fun of all! (We never seem to go there on "adoption day" when they have dogs and cats up for adoption, which in reality is a GOOD thing since it would be impossible to transport them back home in a big box truck filled with paintings!)

Blame the "hero of 9/11" Rudy Giuliani, for the ferret ban here in NYC. People don't know what a total d*ck he was as mayor before that-- they just know he conducted himself well on that occasion and that he "cleaned up" the city. Rudy was an arrogant jerk who thought he knew what was best for everyone and brooked no debate. Rudy didn't even know that ferrets were a completely different type of animal from rodents-- he thought they looked like rats and they seemed "dangerous" to him, so they were banned.

And the "clean up" was a dubious achievement, wasn't it? Sure, it's safe for middle-class families to go to Times Square now, but doesn't that just mean that the drug addicts and prostitutes went somewhere else?

Sheesh, try opening a book...
Of course, this doesn't explain why they're banned in California. Does anyone know?

Probably because they can be very hard on wildlife, and in California it would be very easy for them to reproduce and live in the wild.

Yup. ;) But not where that the tourists see them. :P

Nobody could tell Rudy anything. He had a weekly call-in radio show that was a farce. When ferret owners called in and tried to explain about ferrets to them, he told them they needed psychiatric help to find out why they were obsessed with vermin. :P

I'm not even sure it's ALL of California - just that you can't buy them in Greater Los Angeles. (I know because, after seeing them mentioned here, I went to several pet stores just to see what they looked like.)
Pat - 01 May 2007 23:26 GMT | Blame the "hero of 9/11" Rudy Giuliani You mean that cross-dressing mafioso creep? Excuse me while I barf... I can't believe he's a front-runner for the Rep. nomination... I guess there are still plenty of idiots who believe whatever Rupert Murdoch decides to shove down people's throats.

If the Democrats lose the next one, I think there should be a serious, nationwide investigation into fraudulent manipulation of voting machines!

Are pet mice and rats illegal in New York, too? Then my friend's mother was even more disrespectful of the law than I thought! (She was a real nut-case, who - during the Viet Nam war - deducted the federal taxes from her telephone bill in protest, then complained when the phone company shut off her service.) She got a couple of pet mice, decided their cage was "too restricting", so gave them free run of her apartment, then left them behind because she couldn't find them when she moved out. (I'll bet the next tenants had a few choice words!)

It does sound like she would like some company. Maybe she would accept an older kitten with a very slow introduction? OTOH, I've always used the plonk-new-kitten-down-among-old-cats-and-let-them-work-it-out method, and it's worked fine for me (and them). It does take some time. Miranda hissed at Caliban for a week before they started to play.
Signature Marina, Miranda and Caliban. In loving memory of Frank and Nikki.

It does take some time. > Miranda hissed at Caliban for a week before they started to play. I've already tried the older kitten thing. Stormy was 6 months old when she strolled into the place, and Rita hated her on sight. She also hated the teeny tiny dog that a friend brought in (barely 5 lbs). I already knew she hates other cats, from seeing her with my sister's Topaz(RB), and my friend's two boy cats, Spot and Orca(t). I thought a teeny little kitten might be less of a threat at first. I can't even imagine having a ferret. They don't appeal to me in the least. On the other hand, Rita LOVES people, especially men. Maybe I just need to get a man in my life to keep my cat happy. LOL I'm going to write up the personal ad now. 'WANTED: a man to keep my cat happy'
