I umpired baseball (and softball) for many years and I have 'splained
the infield fly rule to our bunch (explanation follows below my
signature) but I live in dread that Winnie will ask me about the balk.
I never called a balk in over thirty years of umpiring from kids'
leagues below the official Little League up to highschool and adult
recreation leagues.
Right now, the whole household is in shock as our beloved Yankees are
falling like a paralyzed falcon. Bear, being a d*g, remains
optimistic.

If there is a runner on first with fewer than two outs and a fly ball
is hit within the infield so that, _in the umpire's judgement_, it
will be caught for an out, the umpire will signal that he or she is
invoking the infield fly rule. That means that the batter is out,
whether the ball is caught or not, and no runner can be forced out for
failure to reach the next base. Runners who try to advance do so at
their own risk.
The purpose here is to prevent the infielder from deliberately letting
the ball hit the ground and getting the forceout at Second (which is
easy because the runner is staying over by First expecting the ball to
be caught) and a possible Double Play.

Ohhhhhh.........okay. I never did get the *purpose*.
I'm with Bear. The Yankees are my all-time favorite. Except for when
Rhyne
Sandburg played for the Cubs, then I switched. Strictly for the eye-
candy
factor of course.

If they called balks in those leagues, they''d never play any ball. ;)
