We Need Our Heads Examined

Tanada - 31 Oct 2004 22:44 GMT Well, we went to PetSmart to pick up our special needs cat and came home with...a D-thing. The resident owners are not amused. Neither is Smokey, or whatever his name is, when Mandy let the D-thing into our room. She has named him Eshiky, and I've been calling him Ashtray. Mandy is not amused.
You see, yesterday we went to PetSmart to get our monthly cat munchies, litter, and toys. We were also helping Simeon get the carrier and supplies he needs to get Squeakers to Washington State. Well, The Haven adopts d-things outside the store and cats inside of it. Mandy and a roughly one year old, Husky/? mix (some are saying coyote) fell in love with each other and loved on each other for over a half hour while we were inside. Rob and I talked to the head of The Haven about helping a special needs cat, and Mandy and this d-thing were just about getting romantic (it's neutered, she's not). All that day and evening she kept talking about this d-thing. Jim says that she talked about that d-thing for half the night.
We went to pick up Smokey, or whatever his name is, and the d-thing was still there. He saw us and then started looking around for Amanda. We ended up adopting him and bringing him home. Then we went out to the farm (The Haven) and picked up Smokey, or whatever his name is.
Smokey, or whatever his name is, is currently sitting in his carrier in the middle of our bed, getting used to the sounds and smells of the room; while those of our cats that were hiding in here from the d-thing are sitting around the room staring at him. We are gradually trying to clear the room of cats so that we can safely let Smokey, or whatever his name is, out of the carrier. So far QC is the only one to voluntarily leave the room to take on the d-thing.
On another note, the North Carolina Department of agriculture has set up some regulations for animal shelters that may well put The Haven out of business. The Haven is currently taking care of and finding homes for over 900 d*gs and cats, including a lot from the hurricanes in Florida and Alabama. If it is closed down, those animals will be sent to kill shelters and euthanized. The information web page is at http://www.thehaven-nc.com/animalwelfareinfo.htm and includes a link to an online petition page that they are trying to get over 20,000 signatures for. All no-kill shelters in North Carolina are affected by the new regulations, so any help you can give is appreciated.
Purrs and prayers for The Haven and other no-kill shelters in North Carolina are requested, as well as passing information to your friends to help keep The Haven and other no-kill shelters in business.
Thank you all,
Pam S. who NEEDS her head examined

Your heads may be addled, but your hearts are very big. D-things can be very nice, though. Purrs for everybody to get along.
And extrapurrs for your shelters, and their denizens.

I know its not fair but I'm including a warning to Mandy. Husky type dogs do not wander around when they get loose like most dogs will. They have an instinct to head cross country. So be extra careful with training and to not let him get loose.

No, she will *talk.* Sled dog breeds speak this strange "woo-woo" language. Sometimes they sound like they're saying whole sentences, and they like it when you "woo" back. It's quite adorable. ;)

Sherry - 01 Nov 2004 04:34 GMT I can't believe you got a d-thing!! He'll grow on you. I promise. Happened to us too.
Huskies are very smart dogs. Some of them are notorious escape artists and fence-jumpers, but that doesn't mean yours will be. You might keep an eye on him at first, though, which I know you all will do. Best of luck to your new addition! Where in the world did she come up with that name? Its so unusual!

He convinced me that he's terrified of riding in the van. I bought him the burger, which he wolfed down in less than 10 seconds, then lay down on the floor of the van looking smug. I think he's still smurking at me.
The original name came solely from Mandy's imagination. Unfortunately, it sounds like Ashtray. So she changed it to something she felt we could remember/pronounce, Speedy. While lacking in imagination, it has the advantage of being both memorable and pronounceable.

Mischief - 03 Nov 2004 20:00 GMT > If he is Husky, or part- you have some interesting experiences ahead. > They are real characters-- con men, thieves, escape artists, diggers, > talkers *and* lap dogs. ;) All of the huskies I've seen at the clinic are the BIGGEST wimps and the BIGGEST cry-babies. They howl and scream bloody murder. We did this dental on this one dog, Isis, and as she woke up she began whining loudly, and the whines just got louder and louder the more she woke up.
I've even given Isis a bath and she's scared of the water hose and cries all while I bathe her.
As much as I love animals, if I ever get a dog, I will not get a husky or a beagle Every time they are at the clinic, it gets loud. hehehe

>As much as I love animals, if I ever get a dog, I will not get a husky >or a beagle Every time they are at the clinic, it gets loud. hehehe Aww, I love sled dogs. Under normal circumstances-- not at TED-- they are not exactly quiet dogs, but they don't bark. They "woo woo" like crazy though. That's the thing that got me about them ;)
Last winter I came out of a restaurant with my mother, and we saw an absolutely gorgeous Malemute girl, sitting tied outside, waiting for her people. She was about ninety pounds, I'd say, with an unbelievable black-and-white coat. We were just awestruck by her. My mother said "How are you, sweetheart?" The dog immediately leaped to her feet, wagging her big bushy tail, and gave us a long, detailed account: "Woo woo WOOO woo woo WOOO woo!" It was so speech-like-- it was hilarious. ;)

Turns out the little con artist LOVES cheddar cheese. Well he took me for several slices before Rob caught me slipping snacks to the d*g. Speedy has a lot of opinions, but the cats are agreed, the d-thing must go. Pine Cone has already circulated a petition and they are unanimous on it.

Also purrs coming that the crazy gummit busybuddies will at least grandfather existing shelters. It makes no sense to make sweeping changes, calling for major financial output, and also slap a three month deadline for the changes to be in place - but from what I read, that's exactly what the Dept of Ag idiots are doing. Then you read that the public shelters have a much worse the health of the animals, but will be exempt from inspections - what are they thinking, or are they?!?
One question about the petition, though. They're asking for city/county of residence. Do you think they'll be impressed by out of state petitioners? Even out of country?

I sent a message to Lori at The Haven. I asked if I should go ahead and sign the existing petition, or send an email to the contact at the NC Dept of Ag which is given on the Haven site. Haven't heard back from her, yet, which is hardly surprising since I only sent the message this morning.

Congratulations on the new additions - I assume Smokey-or-whatever-his-name-is is the foster kitty? We are wishing Rob and Smokey-o-w-h-n-i the best of luck.
I went to sign the petition about the shelter, but you have to certify you live in North Carolina. Bah. I will go back tomorrow. when I am hoping my brain will be working again, and get addresses to write to. ------ Krista
Tish Silberbauer - 01 Nov 2004 09:47 GMT Goodness, I think you've just re-badged Smokey - "Owhni" is a good name, particularly if you pronounce the "ow" part like you would "owl"!

Smokey, or whatever his name is, gets easily over stimulated and needs to be gentled into a more socially acceptable reaction to hoomin attention. We noticed that his tail takes on a definite kink and a curve, so he may have also been abused when really little, or it might be natural. He's a sweetie, though.

Those poor beleaguered cats! They escape to the bedroom to get away from the weird d-animal, only to find a strange cat on the bed! Well, I'm sure they'll get used to it - it's not like they haven't had to get used to newcomers before - but what a scene that must have been.
Congrats on Eshiky and "Or Whatever His Name Is". :)

Neither is > Smokey, or whatever his name is, when Mandy let the D-thing into our > room. She has named him Eshiky, and I've been calling him Ashtray. > Mandy is not amused. Eshiky has been re-named Speedy because I kept calling him Ashtray and Rob couldn't remember his name and was calling him Mutt and dog. Currently, Rob and Mandy are in the process of training the d-thing to behave with cats and the cats to fight back. Speedy has already learned that not only does QC have hot paws, but also a long reach and a lack of fear in their use. Pine Cone, Merlin, and Huey, while cautious, have been growling at Speedy and have been letting him know that they don't wanna play with him. Speedy is on a leash and made to sit whenever he wants to go play chase with the owners.
Smokey, or whatever his name is, is being called Grayfur by Rob. We weren't given a name for him, so have been calling him all sorts of stuff. He's a sweetie, the other cats have already accepted him, and the problem is that he's too easily stimulated. He can only take so much petting or playing, and he bites or claws. We're working with him, I actually got him to let me hold him for two minutes today before he started chewing on my thumb. He doesn't like hearing me loudly say "OUCH" and stops right away. It may be hard to take him back, but we're going to do what we can to get him to his onlyhome.
